Match ups for the Dorks

Featured Replies

For mine

Col G to Buddy (Has the speed and match fitness)

Frawley to Roughie (Can run off and provide drive)

Rivers to Hale

Bartrum to Rioli

In the Guts

Bail to Burgoyne

Jones run with Mitchell

and the battle of the speed demons Bennell on Savage, should be good to watch.

If hodge plays half back maybe Dunn to make him accountable

Im hoping for a big game from Col S this week.

I dont think the Hawks backline match up well with us on paper.

Im Sure Bruce has been giving the angry dwarf inside info on our team. Hopefully Rob Campbell has some usefull infomation on the way the Hawks set up esp around stoppages. Im sure Todd Viney time at the hawks might also provide some usefull info.

I reckon run in the legs in the second half may win it for us

Go dees

How do you guys (nd girls) see how we best line up?

Who do you think they will play on Jurrah, Green, Watts and co in our forward line?

Who is their run with on Davey? (Chance?)

How dare you have an actual footy discussion on this site :)

Not bad match ups though Rivers to Hale won't work with the height. I'd say Martin.

Bail or Jones to follow Mitchell.

Bennell to Bateman

Not sure about Burgoyne

Then we have Hodge (if he plays), Lewis and Sewell

I hate Hawthorn. I hope we can shut up a few of their supporters this week.

Go Dees

Col G to Buddy. Col is beginning to show signs of Dustin Fletcher in his younger days (without the kicking and elbowing of opponents). However, I don't reckon this matchup is the key to the game.

Frawley to Roughie. If the Dees can get this matchup this is a huge + for us. Roughie can be brilliant or foul with no in-between. Frawley's run and turning defence into attach could really show up Roughead.

Martin to Hale. Stef to continue his great 2011 form.

Bartram to Rioli. Does Barts have enough quick-thinking and quick-stepping to match Rioli? I am not too sure we have a good match for Rioli, but maybe Jetta.

In the Guts

Burgoyne could cause us problems in a similar way to how Goodes always does. Burgoyne is a tall-ish, powerful midfielder and will be too tall for Bail. Pity Jordie ins't playing.

Jones to run with Mitchell. Mitchell gets a lot of ball across Hawks half back, andif Jonesy can get a few touches could mean 2 goals for us. This is a great matchup for us except that Jonesy MUST have contact every time Mitchell is on the ground.

If Hodge plays half back maybe Dunn to make him accountable. Yep - agree with this.

If Hawks don't do something about Sylvia and Trenners, this duo could seriously damage them. Both in good form and are a cut above Bateman, etc...

To win this game our half forward line must be super-aggressive and hold the ball in, maybe even play on them man-on-man. The Hawks love their half backs to get heaps of free ball and set up play. Green, Watts, Dunn, Petterd, Maric, Bennell are the key for us scoring enough to win.

Tappy on Bruce. Show him what he left and is missing out on.

For the record - I hate the Hawks. They have stuffed up so many of our first rounds, and their 2008 arrogance almost matches Essendon's 2000 arrogance. I am sick of average footballers like Ladson, Young and Ellis carving us up without pressure or pain. Not this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if we play Spencer (or Warnock) instead of Maric to cover Hale up forward though Martin. The other way I suppose is for Martin to tag Hale when he goes forward with Jamar in the ruck. Martin therefore effectively rests in the backline which he is more than capable of doing. In fact he would be able to run off Hale given his superior speed and agility, and probably as good in the air.

Match ups will be interesting in this game. Hope Pettard gives Bruce a headache, particularly given Cameron appeared to be below his best last week.

I think Bruce will pick up Pettard. ricky will be too quick for him, and too strong in the air. it will be interesting. Bruce at his best though is very damaging running off half forwards. Ricky will need to be on his toes.

i would really like to see beamer run through bruce...that would be funny...i'm sure some of the hawks players would do the same to campbell brown.

An accidental collision between Bruce and Guera would be nicely ironic :-)

hi Guys, First post!

Had the former boss Paul Gardiner on my flight 3 days ago. He said Frawley was at least 2 weeks away, as they were playing it safe!

Also we tend to be well beaten when we play a team that had recently received an ex player/coach, the all the team game plan etc are revealed.

Go Dees!

Well as I posted in another thread, according to Brad Green on Twitter, Frawley trained well and is therefore back in the side:

"Good session today... Boys ready for Sunday... We welcome back @chipa__8 into the team..."

Catch 22 here. I reckon pace and speed as the sub would be handy in the last. Hawks are a little slow and were opened up by the crows in the last half with good ball movement and loads of run.

But an extra tall with a possible underdone Frawley might also be a good move.

We won the sub last week with Ricky Bobby having an impact compared to the swans ruckman (name escapes me right now)

hopefully Dean plays his cards well and is not forced to it early

Who you reckon will get jurrah? Gibson??

Maybe Gilham. Or maybe Green will get Gilham.

Tappy on Bruce

What a great match up. Tappy hard at the ball and man We all know how soft Bruce is and the errors and turn overs he gives up under pressure. Use Bruces side of the ground to attack, sure to result in goals just look at his efforts last week.

Go Dees

Doubt it.

They both played in their respective backlines last week.

For mine

Col G to Buddy (Has the speed and match fitness)

Frawley to Roughie (Can run off and provide drive)

Rivers to Hale

Bartrum to Rioli

ColG/Frawley to Buddy

Frawley, or Warnock, to Roughie (Can run off and provide drive)

Frawley,Martin or Rivers to Hale

Bail to Rioli

In the Guts:

Grimes to Burgoyne

Moloney can go head to head with Mitchell

Bennell or Trengove on Savage or Bateman, 50/50

Jones to run with Hodge

our defensive match ups

chippa to roughie

garland to franklin,

rivers to hale, but he will have to make a mennace of himself backing back to take marks and help with spoils

grimes to shiels

bartram to cyril

bail to burgoyne

midfield

hodge to be tagged by jones.

let the rest of the midfield play one on ones, but not really worry, as you cant be tagging a whole team, and really we need to have aggressive play aswell.

the sub

the substitute will be interesting to see as bailey said alot about how it is good for substitutes to have flexibility, this leads me to believe, jetta and petterd are the two likely sub options, but based on form it should be one of jetta or maric, i hope jetta, as i would like to see maric get some more good game time, he was our most dangerous forward over the pre season and hopefully he can continue this.

That's ok. We no longer have to deal with hospital handpasses putting the defenders under further pressure or worry about somewhat lightweight tackles.

Loving some of the suggestions. Gonna be a ripper of a game. Wonder what we are paying over 24pts

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
