Below is a list of d'landers that have registered their interest for Ultimate footy ahead of time. Initially I started the list as to make sure those I had promised spots to would get one, but now it seems that there will be enough interest for at least 2 leagues and we shouldn't have any trouble finding spots for people. Feel free to continue to register your interest, or just wait until Feb when the site opens and i'll bring this up again then.

Might have to try that. I registered my interest for next year. See if it's the equivalent of getting laid as..er.. rpfc stated um...

Maybe a D'land league in 2011 ?

I ran this last year for some friends and proposed a league for 2011 for demonland.

I have a few takers already, I am happy to set it up myself, or if someone else would like to do it I am only too happy to HB resposibility. It's a great system, far far better than SC or DT.

Website is as stated above. Won't be online until Jan-Feb, but you can log on and read the rules.

Sure, you can set it up when it comes online. How did you find it last year and how did you go ?

I'm in for sure. No doubt in the world that it will be better than DT or SC.

Not that I won't continue with DT. It has its own charm. But the idea that each team will be completely different and the strategy with the draft is so appealing.

I'll set it up when it's up and going.

I spent a lot of time searching for a good site that did draft style fantasy, there are others (can't remember them) but this one seemed to offer what I was after for our group.

I drew pick 2, took Ablett (pick 1 went to Riewoldt, which cost him). Then picked up Barlow for free after the draft, which proved to be a winning move. I ended up winning the GF by kick.

I agree this is what appeals. For instance in the SC & DT's - you may have 18 out of the 30 players the same with half of the members in your league by mid-season. Everyone wants an Ablett, a Sandilands, a Judd, a Hodge, a Selwood, a Goddard, etc...everyone wants the first few draft picks from the last Draft because their relatively cheap and value for money...ie. Martin, Scully, Trengove...

I would be in for that for sure mate. How many teams make up a league?

How were you given numbers - just given numbers at random ?

Drawn from a hat, 2nd round runs in reverse order, then reversed again for 3rd round and so on.... this is what killed the guy with pick 1, after riewoldt went down his next best player was picked at the end of the second round. The order can be determined however you like, next year we're giving the guy who came last pick 1, and i'll get the last pick.

Last year there were 12 of us, but we could have had 16.

Scoring is also different, uses a category based system. Which is recommended and even though I had my doubts about it initially I think it is a far superior and more tactical way of scoring. Read about it here:

I'll go in for that if there's room.

Would be great.

And rfpc, I know there is no resolution, but it's the draft process I enjoy for some strange reason.

I used to play NBA Live over and over again in franchise mode with a fantasy draft, purely for the enjoyment of building a team.

When I was playing solo it was more enjoyable than playing a game for me (although I grew sick of it pretty quickly).

Ta for the inclusion Jackattack.

Seriously. We did this contest last year, and it made games that much more interesting... It craps all over the other fantasy games, in any other sport too. So much rivalry, and the week is never over til it's over. Great comp.

...

But for future reference I have the following down for 2011 ultimate footy. Draft order TBD.

Can someone explain ultimate footy?

Read above. I've moved posts over from the Best18 thread that are relevant here and give a description.

will we go live? for the draft i mean...

Seems a great improvement with drafting. I'm in if room allows.

Considering I proposed something similar on the 'Best 18' thread, I'm definitely in.

Watch out for my team.

EDIT: Also, I propose a fantasy footy sub-forum, dedicated to this comp, plus SC and DT.

Welcome MrReims. That's 14, there are no garuantees that any more entrants will make the cut, i suspect there will be 16 in the league and therefore 2 more spots, unless I have promised someone else a spot in some other thread and I din't notice (I think I got everyone). There is also a possibility the league size will expand as the AFL is, not sure.

It will be live online, it works really well, we just have to find a time everyone can get online at once. You get 1 minute to select your player or it gets picked for you. The reality is that not everyone will be able to be online at once, but the autoselections are very well thought out and we found that those who missed the draft actually tended to perform better than those who didn't. More on that later.

The 1 minute part is crucial, if it were unlimited you would never get the draft finished 16 teams * 20 players (may vary) = 320, a lot of minutes, when we did it I found we picked players every 20-30 seconds.

Looking forward to the draft already, will be interesting to see how everyone rates Melbourne players, given that everyone (I assume) will be a Dee.

Thanks HT for splitting the thread.

We're going to have to be very prepared, with long lists of our preferences...

But even 20 seconds per pick - that's nearly three hours.

Being prepared is always good, but I found that having a list of players is almost useless because most of the players you want will be likely unavailable and the system provided is good at providing you with the info you need. Some research into smokies can be handy. The best kind of preparation in this is understanding the rules.

We had only 16 players to pick for each of the 12 teams, with only 9 participating live (non-live picks are immediate). It took us 45 minutes. If you were to log off halfway through you'll have automatic selections thereafter, and they're pretty good. It certainly does require that one time commitment, but after that the time investment needed is far lower than SC or DT.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
