Probably lucky to get a game. If a few other listed players got a game he wouldn't be there.

What happened to Michael Newton and Paul Johnson?

The idiots running the VFL should have look at the rules regarding who can play in the finals as this game is stacked in the favour of the Nothern Bullants. Why bother having a final series when it favours some teams over others because the AFL team is still playing or not.

What is the specific rule stopping these two?

I would have thought Newton at least would have min Casey games and not exceeded max AFL games

What if they have both been let go by MFC, insurance if they get injured etc, Miller is there by choice and I think Bell is as well playing out his career because don't think he will look at going to another club, reckon injury has got him...others are all still on contract, still think the club will keep by Hughes and Healey....I thought the rule was 12 and 10

If Newton and PJ have been told their contracts are not being renewed it would be public by now

I thought contracts went October to October (in part to avoid issues like this)

Don't think rule is 12/10. Thought it was something like 7 VFL min, 12 max AFL Plus some limit on total AFL list players, but not quite sure

The contracts may run that way, but if a player seriously injures themselves then the club is up for medical bills etc unless the player signs waiver..........Miller I think is using this to shop himself around and as I said Bell maybe having a swansong........PJ and Newton don't play if they are not picked....given no choice

I have heard that before about the injury cost exposure. Seems a pity but money is money I suppose. If that is true then the club must have told them their time is up but not publicly, . . . or . . . there is another reason . . . injured, not selected on form (doubtful), some VFL player limits applying etc

Bullants side will change dramatically with 5 or 6 players going out for the Blues. If Carrazzo pulls out and with one emergency flying to Sydney it will be six players out and five if he stays in Blues side.

Pretty sure that Newton injured his calf halfway through the North game last week.

Brad Gotch stated in his player review that Addam Maric was injured playing for the Scorpions last weekend and might struggle to come up. He has a groin injury.

Paul Johnson has an injured shoulder and is out for the rest of the season.

Based on how Aussie went against North in the last quarter and a bit, I would be surprised if he played this week.

Sam Blease appears to lack the fitness base necessary to play a full game and will probably be rotated off the bench. He's produced some exciting flashes of play at stages during the latter part of the season and I reckon he'll do well next year with a pre season behind him. I hope he has a better day today than last week.

The long injury list will make life hard for the Scorpions but they can't be ruled out of today's game. They're a team with a lot of spirit.

im pretty sure that afl players receive compo/medical etc for any injury they suffer in their last year of a contract, even if the contract is not gonig to be renewed. i.e. if someone needed a knee reco, we'd be responsible for not only their recovery (which is fair enough) but they also get paid out next year even though they aren't contracted (not sure how much, maybe 50% of wage or something?). That is why the club is cautious with this, as they are employed to play for the mfc not csfc.

no disrespect meant to casey, and i think it is fantastic that these players want to play the season out with casey, but from a financial risk point of view it make sense for the mfc to not want to risk 100's of 1000's of dollars for a game it does not benefit from, for a player it will not benefit from.

I understand what you are saying, but being a bit nitpicky I don't fully agree that statement is accurate.

There is no "proof" that such a consideration has ever been acted on by the MFC. I wonder where this opinion has come from. Has any official said such - not that I've heard.

Also some posters are saying that Miller and Bell have signed a waiver re injury/compensation. Again I haven't seen any proof of this so therefore I will assume that as they are still contracted till October the terms of their contracts still apply

Players such as Miller etc also have future income prospects which may be influenced by playing well in the VFL final series. If they were prevented from playing purely for injury risk reasons this might be construed as a "restriction of trade" as after all they still have a contract to play football (with either the MFC seniors or its designated affliate "seconds") - food for thought??

Still think we will see another 1 or 2 Blues players pulling out of the game against Casey as they are needed for the Blues, 1 at least has to fly up to be an emergency.

I think the player named at full forward is Cam Purdy who played as a top up player in Melbourne's first intraclub practice match way back in February.A few of us thought he looked like Jack Watts. Good to see he's got a game in the finals and I wish him well today.

Things are wet, wild and woolly here at North Port. Small crowd as expected given the conditions. Bit of a shame. There's a close entertaining game on in the reserves between Sandy and Willy.

Casey are up against it today with eight MFC players missing from their last meeting a few weeks ago at Visy Park A few, like Bate, Grimes (who injured his hammy that day), Morton and Warnock aren't eligible while others like Fitzpatrick, Maric, Newton and Strauss are injured. Blistering is dead set right about the injuries. Casey is also missing players with injury. Captain Kyle Matthews (injury sustained after an assault), young playmaker Michael Stockdale (knee) who represented the VFL during the season and boom recruit Scott Simpson (ankle) who once kicked 8 goals for Geelong (VFL) are all out.

I have a lot of faith in the boys coming into the side and reckon we're still a show today. The game's being televised by ABC1 again today and I invite your comments and scores because I'm going to do my best to preserve my iPhone from the elements.
