Bobby M's top 40 list got me thinking about past players who appeared in a blaze of glory & dissappeared just as quickly

What ever happenned to :

Darren Cuthbertson - Announced his arrival to the footy world about 1990 with a couple of bags of goals against North (8 or 9 I think) & followed up with 6 against the Pies in a huge clash @ Waverley, then fell off the radar

Glenn Swann - I think that was his name kicked a bag of 8 on debut against the Pies also @ the G about 1974. Dont think he ever played again.

James Cook - Arrived from the Blues 2001 played one game kicked 6 & never played again. Did his knee I think

How many other 5 minute wonders have the Dee's had over the past 30 years????????????? ;)

I believe Cuthbertson is still playing good quality senior football in the Diamond Valley League

An interesting fact about Glenn Swan is that he followed up his 8 goals for Melbourne by taking 8 wickets the following weekend ( I think ) playing for Melbourne 1sts in District Cricket .

Cook was a PSD pick, Powell was traded.

I don't think Moorcroft even lasted 5 minutes.

Craig Smoker - great start to 98, booted 4 at the Gabba in about Rd 3 and didn't do much after mid-98.

Does anyone remember a player by the name of David Hone, who played as an amateur ( or came from the amateurs ) and who was a brilliant and courageous standout immediately at centre half back, but then disappeared, virtually overnight ,possibly to continue his studies?

Posted

Craig Smoker was a classic, he really came on the scene with a burst and blew away just as fast.

Glenn Molloy is another I can remember, reckon he kicked a few goals in his early games and dissappeared soon after.

I remember Cuthbertson taking a massive hanger in that game against the pies.

Glenn Swann kicked 8.1 against the Cats in Round 10 of 1973. He fell away from there.

He may have taken 8 wickets in district cricket but would not have done so as his effort against Geelong was in mid June!

David Hone was No 21 at MFC and at the point where his footy career started to take shape sort to continue his post grad studies in England. I seem to recall a knee injury somewhere involved.

David Williams did an ACL and was out of footy year. Got delisted by MFC and got drafted by Richmond. Apparently hated it there. Cant blame him. I thought he ended up playing and coaching in the Shepparton leagues.

For shooting stars, I recall MFC played a schoolboy in the 1970's called Des O'Dwyer. They had big wraps on him. Gave him one game as 16yo for a taster. Never made the grade. I think MFC website had a story on him.

When I looked at the Top 40, I realised that the real talent was starting to thin for the last couple of players and I thought how many one minute wonders did we have.

David Cordner arrived on the scene in a blaze of glory. The details are now hazy but I seem to remember him playing one blinder of a game. He was a high-marking blond forward. Great pedigree, then disappeared from the scene.

Whispering Jack updated me on Ed Burston in the mid 60's. Arrived with huge wraps and also disappeared off the scene.

How about Ted & John Fidge - Big wraps on both but neither delivered long term.

There was a guy we picked up from the Bulldogs late 80's. had a couple of big games then dissappeared.

I cant remember his name - Aidrian Campbell maybe? Wore No. 1

& of course Rocket Rod Owen - Played some decent footy for half a season early 90's b4 wrecking his knee.

There were big wraps on John Fidge. His first season as an 18/19 was very exciting. I saw him play a blinder off the HBF at Waverly. Thought he would the next big thing. Oh well. Loads of ability with a crap attitude. His older brother Ted was just a basic roughnut who was not good enough.

Rocket Rod had buckets of ability but was an off field disaster. He was wrecked before he did his knee.

David Cordner was the blue blood blonder hair 6'4" adonis who kick 100+ goals in the U19 and would be an answer to MFC's prayers 20 years ago. Unfortunately did not like the hard stuff and dipped his head when he went for a mark. Oppositions prayed upon it. He disappeared to Sydney and did little.

Ben Beams will have a special place in all Demons supporters hearts.

It was he that broke his leg just before half time on Queens Birthday against the Pies that saw a previously dragged Jeff Farmer return to the ground to boot 9 goals in the second half.

One of the most remarkable performances I have ever seen live, and ever likely to see. All the more special because it came against Collingwood and resulted in a 12 goal or so win.

I have a feeling Ben never played another game for the MFC after that but he is currently the Captain of Tasmania in the VFL and a very good player in that competition.

ah beams he was good

what about the players we got from other clubs that had sort spells

Scott Chisholm,Matthew Collins,Nick Carter and the unlucky Leigh Newton

Scott Chisholm was headless chook with the ball. Prone to moments of sheer insanity.

Matthew Collins - From Crows. Had a good year in 2000. Played in 2000GF side for MFC. Not disgraced. Chronic forearm injuries. Delisted at the end of 2001(?)

Nick Carter - ex Fitzroy - No idea at AFL level. Was he playing for Bendigo Bombers on the weekend?

Leigh Newton - Did an ACL and struggles up and down the ramp between the ground and coaches box.

Ben Beams - Broke a forearm not a leg. Prone to turnovers at AFL level.

Glen McLean, looked a million dollars. Sold to Collingwood for a record transfer fee, and never played a game with the filth.

Robbie Walters.....9 goals in a game........to prison?

Yep, Rhino, that was Nick Carter out there against Sandy on Sat. Didn't go too badly, either.

And "Dirty" Dave Williams....if only we'd played him in the '87 prelim...yes, he captain-coached Rochester(where we got him from) to a premiership. What a handpass to Gazza at VFL Park for the winning goal in the(?)88 final v.WCE.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
