Interesting critique of the Dees by Ratten:

http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-sport/demons-thrill-says-blues-boss-20100601-wu7p.html

On the money with this:

"I've seen Melbourne a few times and they're really exciting," Ratten said on Tuesday. "Geelong are a fantastic team, big-bodied and probably didn't allow them to really get their game fully going.

"But they are really exciting, especially when you think that Trengove and Scully have got to come back into that team.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

trying to talk us up,using the old coaches trick, he is worried.

We have to bring our A game this week and beats these pr1cks. Let's not forget round 22, 2007, the day they secured Kruzer and ultimately Judd. May Jamar put his knee into Kreuzers chest early on and set the tone.

Unforgettable. Worst game I've ever sat through. Carltank were trying hard not to win, while trying equally hard to pretend they weren't.

I hope we destroy the Bloos this weekend.

I'd love to beat Carlton, but Ratten is talking out of his backside.

Watts is starting to take games by the scruff of the neck??

Maybe one day, but not yet.

I'd love to see Scully given some time on Judd this Saturday.

Master v Apprentice ... would be worth the price of admission!

If we had lost, Carlton would now be without one of Judd and Krueser. And we would have had better picks in 2007 and 2008.

What do you think caused us to win? Could the job on offer for 2008 to our coach that day had any bearing?

I would put $$$ on that one.

Yes, but lets not forget Round 1 and 18 of season 2006 when they beat us twice to ruin our top 4 spot. CARN DEES!

The 2007 game might just be the best thing that has happened to us in quite some time: Here's the logic

Lose the 07 game we take: Kruzer in 07, in 08 we take Watts no.1, and maybe Stephen Hill or Daniel Rich (No way they take Naitanui after Kruzer the year before)

So what is better: Kruzer, Watts, Hill or Watts, Scully, Trengove

I take option 2...pushes us back one extra year but imagine your future life without Scullgove

Typical AFL fluff in the paper. What would you honestly expect Ratten to say? "I think MFC are soft and they tanked last year"

Better reading your tea leaves than putting any weight on Rattens comments.

What do you think caused us to win? Could the job on offer for 2008 to our coach that day had any bearing?

Nope.

Carlton were never going to win that game. If they were serious they might have tagged TJ and not benched their leading players that day unnecessarily.

However, MFC should not be criticising Carlton for tanking....

I would put $$$ on that one.

You shouldnt gamble. B)

Not take Nik Nat at 2!! Why would we depart from best available? We could have played Kruezer forward and fill a big hole in the forward line. Stephen Hill is a going to be a good player but I dont know if MFC rated him at 2. I dont think they had D Rich close to pick 2 in his draft.

Player selection is all very well...let's deal with the real point...we got Scullgove, thankyou Carltank. Personally I was pretty suprised Rich was so low after seeing him at the carnival, though I still have questions about how high his ceiling is. IMO Nick Nat will be the fourth best player in that draft after in no particular order, Watts, Hill and Rich.

I gamble when the odds are good. And on that day they were a certainty. "Bomber Reilly" would have already had a good sniff at that carlton job while coaching that game.

Set himself up very nicely. What was it a week later he accepted the job??? Hmmm

Doh. Hardly a certainty and its better your money lost than mine.

Whatever Reilly did in that game was neither here nor there to his future. The outcome was pre set by Ratten

As you should note from the Melbourne vs Richmond game last year, coaches will go to some lengths to ensure they will lose the most winnable of games.

If I remember closely, the MFC coaching position was still open and Reilly in the mix at that time. Reilly should never have been told by the Club when he took over after mid season that he would be judged for 2008 in part on his success in the rest of 2007. We should never have beaten Carlton earlier that year and the win against a failing Dogs team set us up for the 3 card trick in R22.

Doesnt bear thinking about does it??

You just like to Argue RR.

Reilly getting the Carlton Assistant job days after this game finished shall always leave a very sour taste in my mouth.Regardless of your retorts.

Yes Melbourne were always going to win, It was like a wrestling match-the coin had been tossed during the week. Funny how both coaches were working together at the Draft table months later.

For your info i did clean up at the TAB that weekend-Most solid Bet i can remember...but i was also a little sad as i collected as i knew we also lost.

Why?? He had been dumped from the first round of the MFC coaching selection. So what was he to do?? Stay unemployed???

Yes Melbourne were always going to win,

Glad you agree that Riley's future appointment had nothing to do with it. Dont know why you carp on with the rest. You just get found out continually.

Reilly was never going to get the MFC coaching job RR, the Carlton Assistant job was his.

The rest of what you say makes no sense.....

Reilly was never going to get the MFC coaching job RR, the Carlton Assistant job was his.

Thats not what Reilly was told when he took over the MFC coaching job.

But as you say Melbourne were always going to win so its pointless inflating an irrelevant conspiracy theory.

The rest of what you say makes no sense.....

Its not that hard but keep trying....

The day we lost NicNat.

Yes had we lost that game we would have received Watts,NicNat, Scully and Trenners

Thats not what Reilly was told when he took over the MFC coaching job.

Reilly may not have been told that when he took over the coaching job, but by Round 21 I am dead sure he was making & taking phone calls.

The Tanking of Round 22 2007 is not the issue here. We all knew it existed (except KB of course).

BUT the fact that Reilly was at Carlton within days of that game being over will never sit right with me.

The Club & Supporters got shafted that night- absolutely pantsed.

May it NEVER happen again.

The day we lost NicNat.

Yes had we lost that game we would have received Watts,NicNat, Scully and Trenners

who knows, richmond would have had pick 1.

melbourne 2 and carlton/west coast 3.

so either kreuzer, cotchin, masten or morton. whatever.

but we would have had watts and nic nat. and lost maric

The day we lost NicNat.

Could have, should have , would have....different set of circumstances entirely.

Ratten is just throwing bouquets before a game, and age old tactic used to over hype the opposition to make their win (or loss) relevant.

At least he acknowledged us unlike Bomber "I need about 100 years of sleep to remove the bags from under my eyes" Thompson

Talk about making a melodramatic mountain out of nothing. FFS.

If Reilly believed he was not going to get the MFC job he had every right to explore other avenues for work including Carlton.

You do fester on the frivolous and miss the bleeding obvious.

Could HAVE, should HAVE, would HAVE...

Touche' E25. Corrected.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
