Heritage Round

Folks,

I was wondering if soemone could enlighten me as to why the AFL have done away with the 'Heritage Round'. I believe it did not take place last year either.It was great seeing all the old jumpers and having this anual event.

Instead of having a meaningful round which allowed clubs to promote their history, the AFL have introduced this 'Rivalry Round'. I undersstand it hads been around for a few seasons and perhaps concurrently with 'Heritage Round', but lets face it, its an absolute farce! Other than Haw v Ess and Coll v Carl were there any other genuine 'rivalry' games played that weekend (Showdown and Derby are exceptions). I mean seriously, someone please explain the Rivalry between Melbourne and North? Are we genuine cross town rivals? haha!!! Geelong and Richmond?

I would much prefer a heritage Round than this made up Rivalry nonsense. Or at the very least, couldn't they merge the two together?

I once spoke to a person in the MFC marketing dept. who told me of the revenue they generated from Jumper sales as a result of the one off strips. We were even forced to order another lot after we sold out. I know we don't make all that much of jumper sales, but any profit is better than none.

I thought it was one of the AFL's better 'gimmicks' and I would love to see it make a come back and perhaps even on a grander scale. There are plenty of ideas and marketing opportunities for the Afl,sponsors, clubs and companies.

Just on rivalry, I would think the best one we would have would be Geelong/Melbourne. Two oldest clubs, two largest cities in the state. Now we just need a retiring captain to knock the head off some bloke so we can all get angry about it and draw some lines in sand.

Agree with Geelong V Melbourne. I believe we played them in many of the initial heritage matches and indeed in 'Rivalry' round. See I would love to see us play them, two oldest clubs in the comp, get record sellers, pie boys, umpires etc in period costiumes. Bit of pre game entertainments. Friday or Saturday night, at the 'G' would be magnificent.

Not sure if anyone was at teh 'Centenery Celebrations' at the 'G'in 1996, but i thought it fantastic. Our game was ordinary that year. We got belted by South Melbourne

After last weeks boo boo I don't think we will ever see the umpires wear anything 'traditional' again, especially white against Geelong

Was there even an official Rivalry Round this year? I know there was a round in which the typical "rival" clubs faced off, but was it actually publically called Rivalry Round?

Every round is rivalry round!
