Around mid-late last year the AFL officially changed their stance to only 1 year of a tampered draft for GWS.

Surely you jest. I'm not saying I want him to go (far from it) but there's no way that losing him could be considered a disaster, especially considering the list we are building (and have built).

I maintain that any player leaving for the GC or GWS sides would be a disaster. They are our players and the new teams have no bloody right to sniff around our list.

Honestly. We need all the forwards we can get. Especially a full forward. And Petterd showed he can be that player against Collingwood - he's quick, can take great marks and kick great goals. His determination is also fantastic.

Think KP forwards. We have currently on the injured list, Jurrah and Petterd that would be in our 22... That's just 2 players, neither of whom is a KP forward, and our big weakness right now is our forward line. We'd be 5-2 right now if not for the fact we have no real KP forwards. Tapscott? Hasn't played yet and isn't KP. McNamara? You're having a laugh. There's about 6 players who "could" play there.

Compare it to our defence... Frawley, Warnock, Rivers... and Garland as the 4th bloke. That's 3 starters and a backup that are as good as they come (given their ages). Compare our midfield. McDonald, Moloney and Jones. Second string (but not for much longer) Scully, Trengove, McKenzie.... third stringers there;s a huge list of tried and true part timers like Davey, and up and coming talents like Gysberts and Blease. That's a good midfield WITH backups.

Forward line? We have Watts... After that there's a bunch of players that are amazing at playing tall, but that aren't tall.

We're 2 more REALLY good KP forwards from having a complete 22. I'm not saying they have to be Brown/Fev... but at least have the potential. Watts is one, Jurrah is as gifted as they come... And after that?

We ARE screaming out for forwards. Not just names we all like, but players who are not injury prone, who have shown they have the desire AND the gifts. Those last two aspects Ricky has in surplus.

I'm not asking you to agree. Not everyone thinks Ricky is required. I believe he is ABSOLUTELY a starting 22 player, and would walk comfortably (given his age) into any 22 in he country, except maybe Geelong's where there's no room around Johnson and Chapman.

Disaster? Absolutely. The kid is an out-and-out gun. He goes ANYWHERE, he'll look a million bucks, and we'll regret it every time we kick less than 15 goals.

So agreed. The only players that should leave our club are the ones we (the club) decide that are no longer part of the plan. Losing any of our top 30 odd players to the upstart teams would be a massive kick in the guts.

Not even close to the same situation. Geelong chose to give up Moloney because they felt that Ottens was a necessary part of their premiership side while Moloney was not. Also they acknowledged that to get a quality player thay had to be willing to give up quality and did so.

GC and GWS are not giving up a damned thing for the players, nor are their clubs getting a say in whether or not they leave. Further, no club is going to receive fair compensation for the players taken in this manner. The secret formula (which is still being tweaked as we speak) is a farce to allow the AFL to pretend that they are not stacking the deck to a ridiculous degree in favour of the new teams at the expense of every other club.

Give it another 18 years, there'll be Matthew Jack Green coming into the list.
