Irrelevant time of year I know, but as a big NFL fan I'm currently enjoying the sensational ESPN draft coverage and shuddering at the memory of the beyond pathetic Fox Sports AFL Draft coverage last year.

I know the AFL look all around the world to take leads from other sports and I really hope they recognise the quantum leap improvement that needs to be made in this broadcast and that this is how it's done.

Go the ravens. Am also watching. Totally agree. I would love to see a bit more effort go into the coverage. Why not a bit of video footage after each name is called? Give the viewers a bit of an insight into the player, draft camp results, u/18 carnival. Would give the next team up a bit of time to reshuffle their position too.

The problem with any coverage over the next two years is that it will be mostly about the new clubs. If you're confused about the draft order at this year's National Draft, this is how things will stand at the start of Trade Week:

Gold Coast 1 (David Swallow, 19.11.1992 186 cm 83 kg East Fremantle WA) 2 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 26 43 60

16th finishers 4 27 44 61

15th finishers 6 28 45 62

14th finishers 8 29 46 63

13th finishers 10 30 47 64

12th finishers 12 31 48 65

11th finishers 14 32 49 66

10th finishers 16 33 50 67

9th finishers 17 34 51 68

8th finishers 18 35 52 69

7th finishers 19 36 53 70

6th finishers 20 37 54 71

5th finishers 21 38 55 72

4th finishers 22 39 56 73

3rd finishers 23 40 57 74

Runners up 24 41 58 75

Premiers 25 42 59 76

That's assuming the Saints didn't do a Storm, WJ... :D

SO Inner Demon, who do you follow? I'm here at the moment and have followed the draft a bit. You['re right when you say we could learn a bit from the overall presentation, but there's a couple of differences that mean theirs is always going to make more compelling watching than ours.

The whole "Philadelphia are on the clock" thing for ten minutes makes it much more exciting. I wouldn't want to see us work in pick/player trading DURING the draft, but the fact they do that makes it a pretty impressive thing to behold. Also, you're forgetting that Aussie rules is so much poorer money wise, that it would kind of be laughable if we over-did it.

There's a handful of things I envy though. I was talking to my mate who's introduced me to the game, and he's all excited about having a pick in the late 30s. I'm like... "late-30s?... Why are you so excited?"

The fact they have SO much more system in place. The combine is so much more serious... they have so much more to reference. And the draft goes SO deep. You have so many different types of players to garner so much more detail and excitement as far as the first 100 picks. I love AFL for the intangible quality, and the guessing game. You just never now what you're getting from pick 1 down to pick 80. but I hate it at the same time too.

Can't believe Tebow went first round.

I appreciate the differences and we couldn't hope for our draft to ever be the spectacle the NFL Draft is, but I'm more talking about having a panel of experts discussing each pick in some depth and analyzing how things might progress rather than totally ignoring proceedings, having an unrelated conversation and interviewing a mid-level 8 year veteran on matters totally unrelated to the draft.

So much talent, not enough money to go around... Auditors look this way.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
