    1. We need stand out performances all year from our veterans: Green, Bruce, Davey, Miller, McDonald, Rivers;
    2. we need our rejigged mid-field to become a dominant force;
    3. we need several of our "lessor" players to emerge into the elite and surprise us all: Maric, Bate, Dunn, Frawley, Wonna;
    4. we need Liam Jurrah to continue his rate of improvement and become a dominant force;
    5. we need a good run with injuries;
    6. we need a few of our "young guns" to become dominant in 2010: personally, think the most likely to do this are Watts, Tapscott and Trengrove; and
    7. Dean Baily needs to abandon his stop/start tactics when the side gets under pressure. His sides have not yet got the message about "relentless running" the best Demons sides earlier in the decade had in abundance.
      What do others think?

1. Win more clearances. Be able to win the footy, ruck to advantage and get it out with quick smart movement and leg speed.

2. Players who can carry the football, make decisions under pressure and deliver to a target.

3. Play smart footy, make good footy decisions, mature as a playing group.

4. Develop confidence in individuals, team-mates and the game plan.

5. Be stronger and quicker.

6. Confident capable forward targets who want the footy and can convert.

      ]What do others think?

      1. I'd say career best seasons from: Sylvia, Green, Davey, Bate, Moloney, Rivers & Jones (of the more experienced players...) would go a long way..
      2. The midfield will be crucial, but it ain't going to be a 'dominant force' in 2010. Expect the young guns to push the more experienced types for places. That's where we'll see the major improvement in our overall performance. The likes of Trengove, Grimes, Morton, Scully, Strauss, Blease, Gysberts, Bennell and Jetta will ensure that the likes of Moloney, Davey, Jones, Bruce, McDonald, Green, etc. are 'earning' their spot, rather than just being automatic selections..Quality performances from the senior players will in-turn push the kids to improve.
      3. Don't know about Dunn, but yeah, we need guys like Garland, Maric, Petterd, Frawley, Wona...guys who've shown plenty & been in the system for a few seasons to play at a higher level more consistently (perhapds not 'elite' just yet). They're all pretty in-experienced, but their continued development is crucial for success...
      4. We need to be careful not to over-burden Jurrah with expectation. He showed us what he is capable of last year in half a season, but he needs to work hard on the track and continue his development with further match experience. Still just a raw colt for mine, bit like Watts.. He'll be under increased pressure from the opposition after he probably got under the guard a bit, and we shouldn't really be expecting miracles from him just yet to be fair. I'd be happy to see him play 20 games and just steady improvement in his game..
      5.Yep. Absolutely. Its even moreso crucial that we keep everyone fit because so much of our future rests on guys who have yet to play 30 games of AFL football. Not being able to get games into guys like Garland, Wona, Strauss, Blease, Maric and even Grimes last season was disappointing. We need the kids to stay fit pure and simple for the sake of their development, and the club's prospects for success in the next 5 years..
      6. Again, don't know about 'dominant'...Daniel Rich wasn't 'dominant' last year..We just need to get as many 1-3 year players into the senior team and playing well..Who they'll be, i'm not sure. I'd expect Trengove to have an impact early, but we can't expect them to perform miracles.
      7. A lot of our sides under Neale were very 'one-way'...Yeah, they'd run hard, but it was mostly toward our end of the ground. I never felt that we worked anywhere near hard enough going the 'other way', and probably prevented us from having a shot at a flag (in addition to player personnel...) The way we've recruited in the last 5 years, has really focused on getting kids who can 'run all day', in addition to playing football. The likes of Morton, Grimes, Trengove, Scully, Bate and Jones will excel in this area.
      A lot of football nowadays is about setting a 'tempo' and controlling the game..Its smart to slow things down at certain times, i.e. when preserving a lead close to the break, or when the opposition is getting a run on... and to up the tempo at other times...Relentless, non-stop running is likely to wear the players out by the 4th quarter, and no team does that currently..
      Of course we need to keep things moving, but we also need to make better decisions and dispose of the football more efficiently. Hitting targets and getting players to run to the right areas of the ground are most important..We need greater 'cohesion' in the playing group. Too often in the last few seasons, we've looked like a side of randomly assorted individuals, and not a unit that is working toward the same goal. We need to create pressure for the opposition all over the ground through relentless tackling and doing the 1%ers (Watch the 2009 GF as an example of what I mean). We let the ball out of our forward 50 too easily and it costs us dearly. 'Turnovers' have been the single biggest contributing factor in our losses, and we need to show greater discretion when disposing of the ball inside 50..I think fixing these things will help us improve down the stretch..

    Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

    BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

    Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
