Will have to agree to disagree mate :)

I think the NBA draft is fantastic to watch and i look forward to it every year, and its one of the biggest watched things in US every year.

Why do we have to call a stupid number infront of their name? Its like they are getting listed for the army or something.

Argument for not having countdown - imagine the countdown... 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2.... oh well whos left?

Even though there is never much surprise who is going to be number 1 they should always be the ones spoken out loud first!?

Hey, why don't we do it a bit like WWE ?? We could have draftees entering to music they've picked out themselves and cannons firing confetti the colours of the team that selected them... We can arm wrestles to see who gets to walk out to Eye of the Tiger.

Dwayne Russell can interview each new draftee, wearing a ridiculously garish neon suit and asking banal, poorly thought-out questions. He needs to get a bad toupee though.

Bruce Macavaney can gush about all special new kids using incredibly inappropriate terms to describe them. He'd be purring out lines like 'Ooh, isn't he just so seductive the way he caresses the ball...' and 'I could just eat him with a spoon...'

Kelli Underwood can give a running commentary on summaries of draftees, but she'll be running 2 kids behind the one on the podium at all times.

And Vlad Demetriou will find a way to mispronounce names like 'Fitzpatrick', 'Stevens' 'Scully' & 'Butcher', yet be the only man in the room who can correctly spell and pronounce 'Trengove' & 'Morabito'...

Must-see-train-wreck-TV.

Pay-TV at that.

...

Now where did I put my wireless..? ;)

YOU, of all posters, don't get it??!? I thought you'd seen the annual laugh fest that is the NBA Draft.

Mountains of journalists love this event because it gives them a goldmine of hilarious material.

gotcha. Saw the edit.

But that post is an exaggerated version of what the NBA Draft actually is.

Have you seen Craig Sager and Screamin A Smith?

I did forget to give Mark Fine a mention too...

haha nah i do get it and laugh and report a number of things from it. But... it is still more exciting than watching the current AFL draft where the mood is like a funeral and the caller of the draft calls a number out as long as a phone number before they actually say the name of the person they are drafting.

Boring as bat [censored] i think. haha

haha yeah Sager and Smith are no longer involved in the draft.

Smith got fired from espn i think...

But yeah i know what you mean it tends to drag a little and some of the stuff is funny and actually this year your post about comparing it to the WWE was quite spot on when Brandon Jennings was called out at pick 10 for the Bucks.. he decided he did not want to accept his green room invite thinking he may slip in the draft and be the only person left in the green room left... so when he did actually get selected in the lottery picks what did he do?

He rocked up came from the back stage and got introduced by stern and given his hat hahaha it was the funniest thing i have ever seen haha punk he is

Yeah, you know what? I love it the way it is, but that's cos its the AFL draft. It could be sent out via CB radio in morse code and we'd have to sit at home and decipher it ourselves, and I'd still love it.

It is time for a change though, you're dead right. Its a bit awkward and clumsy in its current format.

I just hope (in vain) that Hutchy isn't involved. Scum of the earth.

I just hope Scully has a sidekick / grilfriend with WAY too much muscle definition who can distract Demetriou while Scully hits Hutchy over the head with a deck chair.

haha to the Morse code idea..

Yeah im not asking for a complete revamp where we fly USA flags around the place but its just got to be cleaned up a little bit to be able to be put on TV.

I for one had to listen to it on internet last year as i live in brisbane...

The stream then cut out so it ruined my day so the idea of it going on TV sounds great from my perspective.

Just a bump on this thread, was mentioned on triple m today that this will be going ahead incluidng the top 10 count down. I like the idea and think it's great however I don't like the idea of the count down.

Going head as of when?

I would love for the draft to be televised but as is.

I remember there was a program on the draft wered theyd go through each player of the top 16 or first round i think.

Ridiculous over kill

. Open to leakage if AFL & televisor know the results early, but hey as long as we get our two picks i do not care.

Don't have Foxtel & do not want it.

This year by the sounds of things.

The Draft should be televised. Thats a big thumbs up from me.

But the Countdown thing is stupid. Why do they have to try and make a gameshow out of everything? I guess they'll be hoping Guy Sebastian is the number 1 pick. Stupid stupid idea.

According to a brief par in today's Herald Sun the national draft has been brought forward to Thursday 26 November and will be shown live on Foxtel (with the pre recorded countback from 10 to 1).

I'm not a big fan of the countback idea but given that Melbourne is almost certain to have the first two selections it should be pretty entertaining for us Demon fans so I'm willing to cop the suspense and the hoo ha of it all.

Only three months to go and, after all that's happened with the Demons this season, nothing much in between (apart from trade week) is going to matter.

The best thing about this announcement is that it means the draft has been brought forward. The less waiting the better  The countdown will be interesting. How will you feel if they have counted down to pick 4 and neither Butcher or Trengove have been called? Will be an anxious moment for people like me who are firmly in the "2 midfielders" camp.

Its not on 'prime-time', it will be starting at 6:30pm. The pubs cant even cash in on it at that time.

No doubt it will be relegated to an even worse slot next year citing lack of interest.

Moronic.

The AFL are trying to imitate the NBA, NFL draft - where its all Hollywood and club representatives walk out to the podium with music blarring in order to make their selection.

I suppose its a dumbed down version.

I actually attended the past 3 drafts in the Victory Room at Telstra Dome - and it was pretty boring, and long drawn out event.

So I guess anything they can do to spice it up would be ok.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
