Is there a future for morton as a forward? he is nice and tall and seems to know where to go and kicked 3 on the weekend (although 1 was a gift). We might as well experiment with it and see how it goes, worse thing is that it does work and we end up losing against the swans (which is not a bad thing)

Serious answer: midfielder rotating through the forward line was probably the role earmarked for him from day one to be honest. He's one of a handful of guys we have coming through who are lovely set shots for goal. A midfielder playing in the forward half of the ground sounds good to me.

Bailey is teaching our young players to be flexible more so Morton because his body shape allows us to play him multiple roles.

One of his goals in the last quarter came from a very impressive contested mark when he was left one out with his opponent. I had heard he had good hands in the U18 competition but had never really seen him use them at AFL level before Saturday.

About Morton - think Richo IMO, but much smarter and more reliable kick. Imagine a 190cm wingman who can be changed to KPF & get 3 goals, or a KPF who can be switched into the midfield & be relied upon to pick up 7-8 possessions per quarter. Cale is going to be a big weapon in the years to come, and a major headache for opposition match-ups.

I thought the midfield tag worked well in the first quarter. In the second quarter, in whatever way, it was unravelled by moving Ablett to the goalsquare.

I just liked Nasher's crack about Morton playing forward being "another experiment that unfortunately worked, just like having Jones do tagging roles" and agree - I think Jones should be persisted with, Ablett is very hard to tag for anyone over a whole game. Something we really lack is a competent midfield tagger, all the top teams have one, and if we don't develop one or two it's always going to hold us back.

He is 193 cm and i tip he will end up a Pavlich type key forward, who can go into the midfield or down back when required to mix things up.

Yep exactly.

Morton will not be made into a forward. He will be in the midfield and will float forward and if needed he can go down back. His hight will be used but he has more attributes that can be used more effectively in the midfield. Morton's body shape seems to be out of fashion atm but dont you worry he will turn into an eite midfielder. Do not let his height fool you

Absolutely, with one caveat - a wingman goes forward, he doesn't need to switch to a CHF in the game. Richo gets a kick ahead of the play and takes the saving mark, or a pack mark and goal.

This is where Cale Morton should be shooting for - to get forward and back from a wing and not just a link across the midfield.

Needs a bit of muscle but he showed against the Cats that he can get forward and take a grab.

His excellent goal kicking the other day, made me think of this again. I'm not sure he's key position material, but who knows, if he puts on a bit of weight? I'd prefer him in the midfield to be honest. A player like him just sneaking inside 50 (he did this a couple of times earlier in the year) and kicking a goal against the defensive zone, seems to be invaluable these days. He gets himself into good positions to receive and is a beautiful kick at goal. Does anyone know if we've re-signed him yet?

Yes, I'd forgotten this. Jones did start very well. Pity we didn't stick with him, when Ablett went forward. There's no point tagging someone, if they can just go forward and shrug the tag like that. Although, I thought at the time we made the right move to move Jones off Ablett once he'd gone forward, with Ablett getting 40, in hindsight, we should have stuck with Jones.

Robbie did lead the goalkicking for a few years, as well as killing the wing. And he was a skinny dude, too!

Tenuous, sure, but I like to dream. Certainly I think Flower would be an ideal mentor for him.
