I hate to say it but ...

There is no way we should tank.

The winning culture we developed by beating the bulldogs and carlton late in 2007 is sure to be a major driving force for us in the future.

Further, I do agree with Mr Morton, Melbourne aren't good enough to tank! If Melbourne lose, they should lose trying, not deliberately giving it away. I personally don't think Melbourne are good enough to win too many games for the rest of the year, and chances are will still finish on the bottom. But I don't think it's good enough to tank.

Plus, given your comments on the midfield and defense, they are a very young, developing side. They can only improve.

Oh, did you think we were good enough to beat West Coast?

Well, I picked them, and managed to get 7 wins for this round (unfortunately I was stupid enough to pick Essendon!!!)

Well said, Davey Magik And can I add that I hope the ones calling for tanking aren't the same ones criticizing supporters for not going to the footy each week
Whoa. Hey I never said to "tank." Don't put words in my mouth. We cant tank anyway. Look at our history. I only have said numerous amounts of times of late with the state of our list and the position we are currently in, there is an opportunity - its list managing

Semantics.

Semantics.

That ol' chestnut. I think not 45h.

List management doesn't involve non-committal players during a game, tanking does.

You'll note I didn't state names. There were posts suggesting tanking.

I do note you didn't mention the word "tanking" however you did state:

If an opportunity presents itself where we are in the position to get the best 2 picks or 2 of the best 3 picks of the U18 players available in the country (outside of the Gold Coasts 12 x 17yo picks), we should take that opportunity.

It could be argued that one of those opportunities (aside from pre draft trading, of course!) could be interpreted as tanking. Not that I'm trying to pre-empt what you're thinking, but if that is what you're thinking, it would seem rather contradictory for you to then say "I never said tanking" considering your post earlier was written as an argument against my previous post stating why I don't like the idea of tanking.

I hope those calling for tanking never celebrate a win this year again.

You're a disgrace and have no idea about culture and football if you think we should lose.

It's pretty simple is it not?

We NEED Those PP.

We will not win over 4 game or 16 points whatever it is. We are just not good enough.

If by some miracle we do play well and need to lose a few game on purpose then so be it.

What are you really standing up for? This culture is in your own head. If we did lose in purpose this culture will not even be talked about when Tom Scully wins us a Flag.

I have to say reading this thread has annoyed me no end. I hate the thought of supporters hoping we lose. I know it's symtomatic of a crap system which rewards bad performance, but sheesh, a team that's good enough to be in the AFL should always play to win.

That's just the point Kat, we are playing to win, that's why we we will lose at least 18 games this year.

No. You're pre-empting. There is no semantics either. The players try.

I'll say it Kat, if we win the next 2 games I hope we TANK for the rest of the season. In fact I'll call for Bailey's head if we don't

YES

Our ability to play with high intensity for 4 Quarters will determine whether we win or not.

Sylvia out means someone needs to step up. Throw Grimes in, Replace Grimes with Watts for some experience for him.

I don't believe MFC would "TANK" for picks, we're too PROUD for that. I Don't think i want to be associated on the same page as Carltank.

Bailey and the ENTIRE playing team will always be playing to win. We proved this when we bet Carltank. Proofs in the pudding.

LIST MANAGEMENT is an interesting view to take. At the moment in the public eye, NO ONE is really expecting MFC to win 1 if anymore games. (AFL Reporters, Commentators, Demonland Members are excluded from the list) Wouldn't really worry anyone if we did play a few more up and coming players, would seem as a positive.

I expect every player to put in 110% to WIN as soon as he dons his jumper. Any player otherwise doesn't deserve to be playing.

Port are starting to click and breaking into the eight will mean they are going to bring there A TEAM and GAME. They will want to try and cement a spot in the eight. It will be tough. Draft picks or No Draft picks I Want MFC to be "competitive" Win, Lose or Draw.

We dont honestly need to tank. Its a misnomer.

However we are going to play sides during the rest of the year who will definitely be tanking.

We are clearly the worst side in the competition. We need the access to the best young players.

The issue that stinks is the AFL rules. And we should be playing to manufacture the best possible outcome for the Club for the future. And it is not a series of meaningless wins against half hearted clubs seeking to improve their draft position at the junk end of the season.

And I reserve my right to disagree with you wholeheartedly

And I reserve my right to disagree with you wholeheartedly

And I love the fact that people still view the game as a win at all cost scenario. I hope the AFL will soon return our great game back to that very scenario. All the best and enjoy the wins.

I hope those calling for tanking never celebrate a win this year again.

You're a disgrace and have no idea about culture and football if you think we should lose.

Well put.

We are going forward, and one pick isn't going to be the difference.

I hope those calling for tanking never celebrate a win this year again.

You're a disgrace and have no idea about culture and football if you think we should lose.

Very harsh.

One thing I would say is that those advocating altering the best 22 to minimise the chance of winning cannot criticise Bailey for his win/loss record.

I mentioned this earlier but I'll say it again: it is up to PA to turn up, we will be there for two or three quarters but they are a better team and should beat us.

Like that ridiculous WB win in 2007, the other team was poor and it cost us (although considering the close finishes we lost in early 2007, it's debateable whether we deserved a PP).

Cannot see us beating the Power

They have far too much to lose

Fact is i really doubt we will win another game this season

The more games we get into our kids the better

Throw in Valenti for example just to see what he can do knowing his whole football future is in his hands

Someone like Newton is a bit different as he has another year on his contract to go and maybe a hard pre season might rattle some ungency into his head knowing its his final year to make it

I agree that we have to look long term, but the short term solution is equally as damaging. Poor performing sides don't get the memberships and don't get the sponsorship deals.

We've smashed our membership record in consecutive years as a cellar dweller and, as you've pointed out, signed up two major sponsors in the midst of a severe financial downturn.

Jim was extremely successful in campaigning for these for this year, but how long is that going to last if we deliberately lose games? We also still have a massive debt, which won't be fixed if the club loses the support of its members through poor performance.

The debt won't be fixed by a fifth win this season and neither will the mood of supporters. In fact, I suggest 'winning' Scully will do more for our debt and memberships than an extra win or two.

Couldn't agree more.

I would be furious and disgusted if we didn't put our balls on the line as a club, and did everything in our power to make sure we get picks 1 & 2. If we "list manage" and still win, so be it, but manipulation off the field should take place as early as this week.

Note that on the field I expect our players to play in their designated positions and put in their best performance each and every week, but I hope that the coaches manipulate team selection and matchday tactics to reduce our likelihood of winning (i.e.- put Davey on the bench during crucial moments in the game, try new roles, don't tag opposition players etc...).

To miss out on the two best kids in the country, particularly in light of what will happen to the draft in the coming years, for the sake of an extra one or two largely meaningless wins, is a costly and weak attitude to have.

Winning culture is a load of crap IMO. Look at where St Kilda are at now that their early picks are at their peak. Hasn't really hurt their winning ability either. When you are a good enough side, you win games. When you are a club in our position, crying out for talent, you take full advantage of a system which, while flawed, is set out to help struggling clubs. It is there for a reason and we should get maximum use of it before it is too late.

We missed out on pick 2 last year because of an extra meaningless victory in 2007 (does anyone even remember us winning in 2007? does anyone care?). If we miss out again, myself, and many others, will be seriously filthy with the club.

Nobody will be worried about how many games we lost this year, when Scully wins the Brownlow :) (if he wins it with West Coast on the other hand, people will need to be killed)

If we miss out again, myself, and many others, will be seriously filthy with the club.

We can rest Brock and Beamer or whoever, but it will mean nothing if PA don't turn up.

It's in the hands of those arrogant tossers at Alberton.

I am getting a good laugh out of this thread. We will not win 5 games this year. We have beaten a rabble that was Richmond after jumping them and having them nearly steal it, and we have beaten a team that has now lost 18 in a row on the road, and even then I wonder how much of it was us running on emotion. It's not that we are that bad a team but we just struggle to play 4 quarters due to youth and inexperience. The PP's are safe without us needing to tweak things.

We can rest Brock and Beamer or whoever, but it will mean nothing if PA don't turn up.

I disagree.

They've got too much to play for. Even if they don't bring their A grade, their B and C games are probably better than where we are at at the moment.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
