Lyon/Watts Interview

Another request for a summary... i sit through the drivel that is 90% of the footy show, and then the better half chooses THAT EXACT MOMENT to have a discussion i can't back out of.

More like worse half by the sounds of it! <_<

Don't worry, Jack will take care of her :o

It literally was a five minute interview and everything said has already been mentioned.

She actually used to work with Jack a year or two back, she's probably all Jack'ed out!

I'm sure it will end up online somewhere for me to watch.. sounds like he handled himself well again though, and there was no "I'm ready to dominate at FF" arrogance... said it as he sees it.

Thanks guys.

Try "hang on a sec, I just want to see this interview" or, if time is of the essence... "Shhh".

Most media interviews are snores, and if there's ever a good one you don't need to have seen it because it'll be noteworthy enough that people will talk about it.

I'd have more chance with a quick "Oh look, there's Crawf with his kid..... and his top off"

Not that i can remember

Signing Diamond Jim Tilbrook was a bit that way for a few days

Diamond Jim Tilbrook was signed when the "Gin and Tonic" swillers ran the club (which was a long period of time hence no premierships) .Their idea was that one star player would fix all the onfield problems (as opposed to developing a competent recruitment and development plan). There judgement was often clouded by clouds of pipe smoke , too many Gin and Tonics ,too much focus on who was going to win the "Head of the River" ("Go Grammar" and Pheasant Hunting.

Yes there was much hype about the arrival of "Diamond Jim" however the difference being the only thing "Diamond Jim" had going for him was he was a decent kick. His leg speed would make Brock McLean seem like Usain Bolt!

As for Jack Watts : Good mark ,good kick left and right ,great leg speed ,teriffic at grond level, good decision maker and the list goes on.

Once you got past the "uhms" and "you know's" there was nothing much said from an 18 yr old.

Agree and after 20 minutes of the puerile and lightweight banter on the Footy show, I could not be bother. Its a base level program at best with the same jokes being re hashed ad nauseam.

Thank God Watts is not like the false promise Tilbrook. Diamond Jim was overhyped nothing. But boy Tilbrook could kick a football a mile when he did actually get it. W Jack did a great piece on the shattered hopes over Tilbrook.

Bloody hell has there ever been so much coverage about a draft pick

Enjoy it while it lasts. We haven't been spoken about alot Ie. programmes like "On the Couch" - we fail to rate a mention.

I can relate to that.

I've tried that too. Sometimes successful, sometimes it can influence immediate feedback, the kind you don't really want to hear.

A tad over-simplistic. Tilbrook was talent with a crook back which we did not know about - we never had the best of him. That said, I did see him haul us out of trouble at Arden Street one Saturday with two thumping last quarter goals launched from near the gasometer.

We got a draw having been down by four or five goals earlier and I left the ground to the moans of Norf supporters whinging about college boys - kept my mouth shut (and kept my teeth)

The hope was we could build a team around him but it never came to that.

As for the Diamond Jim moniker that was based on the fact he came across for $25,000!

The interview was OK, but it didn't include anything new. I too think it's important to manage expectations. I can only think of one instance when a young full forward lined up against Collingwood on debut... B. Fevola, millennium match. He kicked 8. So I guess, with all the hype we want Jack to kick 15 or 20. I'll resign myself to believing he's only as good as other kids on debut and therefore expect around 8 goals, although i'll settle for 6 including the match winner after the siren. Wait... is that too much...?

If you heard Campbell Brown when asked by Sam, would you get Watts a touch up, he said you bet. I wonder which C#@#@$Wood Flith will try to take Watts out?

he is super impressive - the way that he conducts himself, the way he chooses his words carefully...

i dont think there is any doub that the club has groomed this young man for 10 years at this club - the late debut, the nostalgia of unveiling him on queens birthday at the G but more importantly, that the supporters want to see him....

garry lyon was good - the comment re his three boys was fantastic and i think emphasised the lack of a champion!!

it is exciting for the footy club, its supporters and also its players.....

and as for the scum to hit him, well they would wanna win this game!! nick maxwell has a habit of getting young kids, so....

There is no doubt they'll target him both mentally and physically (and I hope if the shoe was on the other foot that our defenders would do exactly the same). But I am sure our boys are aware of the treatment he is likely to get and I have no doubt they will protect and defend him accordingly.

If he plays on the wing and pushes into the middle I'm sure Moloney, McLean and Sylvia will help him out if any Scum player decides to give him one or two bumps behind the play. If he plays up forward, well I hope Jamar is there alongside him. I would not want to mess with the Russian!

eddy McGuire said that collingwood would just go out to play footy and not target jack but i dont belive it.

Since when has Eddie McGuire been a member of the Collingwood match commitee? He wouldn't have a clue what they're going to do with Watts.

So yeah, I don't believe him either.

I don't think they'll go too far out of their way to rough Jack up. But they'll certainly let him know it's the big time. And I'm looking forward to seeing how we go about responding to it.

Ah, F%#$. It's still only Friday. This weekend is going to drag on out.

Yeah Eddie is not a player, you could see his Cheshire smile now if JW was flattened. Just watch Maxwell!

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
