Centre + Backline for 2009

I'm interested to see what others think...

The other post re forward line is great, but really the side starts in the defensive half on paper.

(This is not for rd 1, this is the ideal for next year)

C Morton Bruce Grimes

HB Pettard Rivers Green

FB Wheel. Garland Warnok

Martin I have to Go Forward or reserve back.

Bruce has to stand up in 09 so Throw him in the Guts!

I wasn't wanting to debate where Rivers, Garland, Warnok start as each week they get jobs not positions, so just stating that they are the best starting 3 to play tall. Definately Garland as the General at FB and Rivers and Warnok to slot in around him.

Be Gentle! :o

Petterd (Grimes) Rivers Bruce

I like that as well, question is... who is playing on ball..

RR Mclean © R Jones int: Buckley, Maloney, Jnr

C Morton Bruce Grimes

HB Pettard Rivers Green

FB Wheel. Garland Warnok

If Martin, Rivers, Warnock and Garland are all fit, I'd have to either drop Warnock or try Garland up forward (which I'm pretty happy to do especially with Watts at school, Robbo injured and Newton showing nothing.)

I'd like Mclean with Jones and Moloney. One of those probably can't start in (not the best kicking in that group collectively)

My ideal set-up for next year: -

Backs: Whelan Warnock Garland

H-Backs: Buckley Rivers Strauss

Centre: Morton McLean Blease

H-Fwds: Sylvia Miller Davey

Fwds: Maric Watts PJ

Foll: Jamar Bruce Jones

Int: Moloney Grimes Bate Bennell

Emerg: Petterd Jetta Wonaeamirri

I like the idea of this if blease and strauss can come on we will be on the rise in 09. Forget the 2010 draft! The only change I would have is to have spencer on the bench, PJ in the ruck and green in the pocket

I like buckley and strauss at half back or thier ilk. we definitely need some pace and spot ups out of the backline.

Forgot about Green. I won't sit on the fence. I'll put in Green for Moloney.

Just goes to show that its really a team game when selections become difficult. By that I mean, every person in the squad plays there part in one way or another during throughout the season, in order for the club to achieve their ultimate goal they set out to do - to finish as high up the ladder as possible to give them the opportunity in winning a Premiership. If that means bringing someone in, in order for another teammate to be given a rest for general soreness for example, it happens. Or if its a horses for courses policy. Ie Wet Weather game.

Brock in the pivot for his leadership and grunt, keep him in or close to the centre square where he can "captain" If we start to play through the corridor he'll revel in the opportunity.

Grimes, Strauss, Jetta and Petterd are pretty much all new recruits so thers's a bit of hope in those selections

Let's hope Rivers is super fit

Warnock as the FB or Martin if he doesn't work out up forward.

It's only difficult because you rate 3 kids who haven't played a game ahead of Green. I hope our draftees come on too but I don't expect them all to be automatic selections this year. Why aren't Cheney and McNamara in there  5 players with a combined experienc of 1 game in your best 22 is a little unrealistic me thinks. Hope you're right but I doubt it.

i can't name a centre line without the onballers and i don't know that combo yet.

my best guess is pretty similar to what's already been posted.

B whelan, garland, warnock

HB petterd, rivers, bruce

whilst i put that down, i really hope there's a name i don't know of yet, that can earn a spot.

would also like to see one of our bigger players like a struggling ruckman put his hand up to play some special defending roles.

This isn't a round 1 best 22, it's an '09. Aussie, Martin & Morton (Maric at a stretch) who had zero games before last season were best 22 last year and from what Grimes showed he wasn't far away and i'd expect him to play most games this year.

So to me Grimes is almost a given. So that's 4 untried players which may still be a little much considering 2 have school still, but i could see Strauss & one of Watts or Blease being best 22 players, but maybe the mature Bail is a better option for the bench then Bennell.

It's optimistic, but hardly a huge stretch.

We had plenty of injuries last year. I don't think our young fellas would have got as many games if our experienced players were on the park. Martin probably wouldn't have played if Riv was fit, etc. I'm not against playing the kids, I just hope we don't have to rely on them like last year. 2 injury plauged seasons in a row is enough for me.

I'm also a bit surprised that everyone seems to want to see all this years draftees play but noone has mentioned Cheney or McNamara. Both were bottom age pickups last year and will have 2 preseasons under their belt this season. I'd be hoping they step up before this years later picks who have more time on their side.

Garland up forward? I like it.

Garland up forward? I like it.

Correct.

Garland up forward? I like it.

I like the idea of me & Miranda Kerr alone in a room.

Doesn't mean it will work out the way we want.

I like that Idea, brock in the guts to lead rather then on rotation as RR.

Maybe changing with Green in the FP - thats a little different!

Not sure about 2009 but looking further ahead Jetta and Strauss look like the right types in an area we are deficient, both have reasonable pace and are good users, particularly Strauss. Jetta is strong overhead which is key deep in defence.

B: Rivers Warnock Jetta

HB: Strauss Martin Frawley

That covers most attacking threats and frees Garland to the forward line, I'm very optimistic about this area.

Watts, Garland, Miller, Newton, Dunn, Bate, Sylvia, maybe Morton - there's plenty of options there as targets in the forward line if we can get our delivery right.

I think our biggest deficiency now is winning contested ball - we need more better inside midfielders.

Agree Old. We need to bolster a very ordinary midfield.

So Jones, mclean, Valenti , Moloney arent good imside mids?

If jones isnt a good inside mid then wat is he good at?

Backline looks top heavy. Part of the reason for having the least inside '50s this season, was that lack of creative attack from the backline. I don't see Frawley providing any creative run. I'd rather have Petterd or Grimes as a half-back, and Garland ahead of Warnock as full-back.

No.

Aside from McLean I thought it stood out like the proverbial.

ATM, Jones is shouldering too much of the burden in our midfield particularly with McLean. As a 20yo he will be part of the midfield rotation but I worry about his disposal and thinking under pressure.

Strauss and Jetta add creative run.

Frawley's got pace and is better kick than he looks, that backline has heaps of run except for Rivers and is definitely not top heavy.

I'd rather have Grimes and Petterd in the midfield and Garland in the forward line.

Just a thought, could Frawley play a role in the forward line? - Similar to what Cambell Brown did this year - lots of grunt.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
