SEN - Talking Potential Draftees

Tex

Recommended Posts

Pretty general stuff about some of the names in the draft. Last week they covered the Victorian draftees of who they highlighted the main names such as Watts, Vickery, Roughead and Sidebottom (the player who kicked 10 goals in the TAC Cup Grand Final. Also mentioned Corey McKernan's brother as a possinle late first round/early second round pick which puts him on our radar. Also mentioned Ziebell as a potential gun midfielder who will go early. Last night they spoke about draft picks from SA and WA. It's all a lot of names and I don't think these blokes know any more than what all of us can read on the internet.

I've spoken to people who have both coached and trained with him in basketball, and i was told long before these sought of threads surfaced, that he is indeed quite a cocky and very self confident athlete. Not in a way that you want to punch the kid in the face, more along the lines of he is good and he knows it.

I listenend to the program on Monday night and it sounded as though

McKernan would go top 11. I was also interested to hear that Blease

might go 2nd or 3rd round. I know nothing about him but I'm aware

that he has caught a bit of interest amongst Melbourne supporters.

I would have liked to have heard more about Hill and Swift on Monday night.

In other words I was wanting to know if it was worth hoping they'd fall through to pick 17.

I would have thought McKernan would go mid-first round so no surprises there.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Blease slipped to a late 2nd rounder, he's a pretty flashy player and quick but still a long way off (both physically and as a footballer).

Trying to think of a good comparison but none come to mind other than maybe a white man's Jared Brennan

Thanks for that Eastie,

The other thing i enjoyed hearing, and I think it was from the guest Leon Harris,

was that, when asked who Watts reminded him of, said it was James Hird around the ball.

Because I have enjoyed the footage of Watts around the ball.

Thats interesting re Blease, http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=e7DTWnqlg8E I hope your right, about lasting till pick 17, as I thought he might go between 10 & 15. I'd grab him @ 17 if he's there & then hopefully take Shoenmakers with 19.

If we can get these 2 with 17/19 I'll be happy & the later picks will be a bonus.

Blease would be good because he is exactly what we need atm- a midfielder with good footskills, is a finisher and is quick enough to run the ball out of congestion.

Atm we have too many workhorse- Valenti, Mclean, Moloney, Jones, Grimes etc

Who's that in relation to?

Both are worth hoping for and are a chance, it'd be reasonable to believe that at least one of them would last until our pick 17. Plenty of clubs will rate Swift top 10, just depends on whether they are willing to take a chance on his injuries, but i think someone will mid to late 1st round. Hill could be targetted late 1st round, but they'd be overlooking some high quality talls to do so.

I don't necessarily think we need another KP at this pick, i'd stil be going best available. If we passed up a gun mid to go for a forward because of need it'd be a big mistake. I'd be stoked if we got either of Blease or Hill, we need guys with pace that can deliver. I wouldn't expect either to be dominate next year, but that's not exactly a problem for us. Both are very light, about 75kg, which is a concern for some and hopefully that mean one of them makes it to us.

That's another concern about Blease is that he can fade in & out of games a little, but this is pretty common with junior players and once they increase their fitness/endurance they can have a greater impact.

Another thing which might see him slide a little is relatively poor 2nd half of the TAC season, which has been attributed to him carrying an injury in the last few games. Hopefully that quiet patch might see him slide a little

I didn't rate his game in the U18s final... Blease that is. Long way to go IMO.

They've all got a long way to go, we're not going to take him with our first pick, but our 2nd or 3rd pick would be more likely, if he's there.

It's not so much how they did in any one game but their upside on top of what they add to our talent spread of our list, we're sorely lacking in good drivers in traffic which can break the lines.

I haven't seen many who have the change of direction at pace to break the zone & deliver well, as well as win the footy but also takle & bring down opponents. Davey doesn't like to takle hard.

We also need another player later in the picks with a hard as leadership attitude. But early we must grab class.

I read that he was injured preseason & missed a substantial slice of the preseason conditioning, so was slow to warm into the season but also would contribute to running out of gas towards the end.

If you look & study his efforts in the one percenters of running hard defensively takling & then running offensively, he looks highly motivated to me, IMO.

Actually that's been one of the biggest knocks on him ^.

For someone of his pace and endurance the general mail around Ranges and also a couple of guys from the papers is that he could work a lot harder (which would explain why he drifts in and out of the game). They say he works hard when the ball is in his general area but if his opponent took off on the opposite side of the ground to the ball he'd be less willing to chase.

I'm a pretty hard marker and I don't like Norwood (so I may be biased lol) but I'm a bit worried he'll become that ugly word - receiver, downhill skier etc etc

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
