I think it is time to talk about trades, Cameron Bruce its time to find him a new home put him out there, i think the swans would love him, take what ever they wont to give for him, Paul chapman has to leave the cats, they wont him to take a pay cut,to pay there other stars more money, he does not wont to take a pay cut, that's what billy brownless said on sen a few morning ago. i think he is more important then ablett, he is a gun and hard at it he would improve any side by 10%

As much as i do think Cameron Bruce is a player we need, i do feel every player is worthy of trading if the right deal is to benifit us however i hate it when clubs trade of players with contracts and we end up paying them to play else where.

Also we dont need an aged player to replace anyone, youth and lots of it

Cam Bruce has been a very good player this year and does not deserve the criticism that he cops. His disposal at times is frustrating but hey join the queue - it is long in that department at the MFC.

As far as trade bait is concerned I would trade Bate (no pun intended). I know he has been signed up for 2 years so its not going to happen. But realistically we can't support a 192cm outside front of the ball player who only plays well when someone is giving it to him. He fails in big games, he fails under pressure and he fails to turn things around during a game when he is having a bad one. But most importantly he fails to win the hard ball and for someone of his size and body shape that is just not acceptable.

In 2 years when his contract comes up he will still have trade value though although not as much as he has today.

Vincehotboy - Not sure you're so hot with this thread yet Vince. Time will tell. Word of advice. Don't believe everything Billy says. If you are suggesting we get Paul Chapman for Cameron Bruce, what good could we possibly get out of that deal in five years time? SUre he is a good footballer, but so is Bruce. Geelong would not want Bruce with what they have at their disposal at present.

From Geelong's perspective, if it "aint broken, leave it".

Bruce has been good this year but if a top 25 pick is offered - take it. THAT is not criticism, its the reality we face.

As for the second paragraph, my god...

Bate is 21 playing at CHB predominantly, he is too slow for a wing but as a lead up forward has shown he can mix it with the best. His 4 goal game against the Swans was great.

"Fails in big games"?!?!?! What big game would that be? We are 3 and 18 FCS!! and last year, when he was 20, we were 5 and 17.

Bate is the kind of player that in our position, were he at another club, we should target during trade week.

We are last, have won 8 of our last 44 games and people want to keep good 28 year olds over promising 21 year olds?!?!

A few here need a reality check.

For a start Bate has been playing across the half forward line. He has not played in a key position except when Miller was out.

What I meant by big games is when the game has some intensity, it is close or we are a chance to win then Bate will go missing.

The positives for Bate is that he is young although he has played nearly 50 games which gives us a good opportunity to assess him as a player. I rank Garland and Martin who have played much less football as much better prospects of developing into very good footballers than I do Bate.

Bate is a good kick and has a good motor.

But the downsides are that he is soft, won't get the hard ball, is always looking for the easy kick and doesn't play any type of physical game. After nearly 50 games all of that it is easy to assess and it is very unlikely that he will change the way he plays in the future. I agree he will play better in a good team and hence why I think we could get a really good draft pick for him.

Without any aggression he will never impose himself on a game and this will be his downfall throughout his AFL career.

Perceptions change. I thought that Garland would be a certainty to be delisted - 21 rounds later and I think he can be an amazing CHB.

Besides a good kick and motor, Bate has great hands and plays the lead up forward role better than any 21 year old in the AFL. You may say he doesn't play a true CHF, fair enough...but who does? He gets the second best defender every week and when Miller is up on the wing or playing crap or injured, Bate gets the No.1 defender.

He is tougher than you realise, I hope he shows you something on Sunday. And if not, I guarantee you he will show it next year.

Again I say - trade the older players before you trade a 21 year old. This is nothing more than common sense, just seems to be not that common...

I hope you are right about Bate but I doubt it. I can't agree he has great hands - he has dropped some sitters this year. Big call about being the best 21 year old lead up forward in the AFL!

Bottom line is that opponents have and will continue to recognise his weakness (ie lack of physicality) and as a result he will only play well in games where there is little pressure. He won't perform when you really need him to stand up. I hope I am wrong but I doubt Bailey or any other coach will toughen him up.

Bate has been playing with a hand injury since before Queens Birthday...hence the glove of late as well..and when we're losing, of course scruitny is going to be on the forwards..he is a CHF..not a goal kicker. we've had robbo out and miller out a bit too

newton has no second efforts and rarely lays a tackle, when he does he aint bad. needs to do it more

Bate has been harshly judged in this forum

i'd trade bruce over bate anyday, cos bruce has poor disposal. bate can kick goals, long goals, and takes a good mark- when not injured.

bruce is on the wrong side of the age category we want our players to be in. Green is a far better player, and a better leader if you want to keep either bruce or green.

My St-Kilda freinds allways said up till about 2 years back, get rid of that hack, Brendon Goddard.

Now what do you think they're saying???

Cam Bruce is a good footballer for us but at the end of his best. Other clubs know there is not much left in him, even for 1 year to get a premiership.

He has been great for us over the last 5-6 years and he will now play out his career with MFC, especially now that the salary cap has eased with the departure of 3 of our senior players.

I think we could use him while our babies are maturing, if not simply to take opposition heat, or offer it. He should retire no later than the end of next year to avoid an Yze type ending. There are parallels with Yze, for example the disposal penetration is missing for the same reason; the massive ball drop, which no longer suits a tired leg.

I agree with you about Chapman, but for Bruce? You joke surely.

Also, why would Chapman want to come to Melb? He spent 8 yrs at Geelong waiting for the good times; he's too old to see them at Melbourne. <_<

Bailey has just today announced quite clearly that he won't be trading ANY senior player. He wants to go for youth and keep his draft picks. Good on him! My thoughts exactly. You must have a good blending of experience with youthful enthusiasm. Guess his stance today puts to bed any further discussion on possible trading. YM will be disappointed.

I got the impression he was not going to trade FOR senior players.

And of coourse he is not going to say that senior players are on the market, it will unsettle everyone and dent his plans.

Posted

Whats the good of putting senior players on the market.

Every team needs some senior boys, experience is ever so important when building a young team.

Posted

a) they have value

B) they won't be around when we're next in flag contention

Posted

Bailey meant we wouldnt trade picks for senior players or any players

we'll keep all our picks, but dont rule out trading FOR picks- giving away senior players

So if DB is ruling out trading ANY senior player. Does that mean he could possibly NOT rule out trading a younger player? <_<

I read that as Dean saying he wouldn't trade any draft picks FOR senior players

No he has not ruled out trading any senior player, read some of the others in the thread who disagree.

Rogue is spot on, and I harp on this every week it seems, senior players are expendable because they have value and they will not be around to win a flag for the Melbourne Football Club!

Why anyone would be so desperate to keep the 'senior' 'leaders' around a club that has won 8 of the last 44 games is beyond me...

Vulnerable to trade because they will not be around for our 'window': Bruce, Green, Wheatley, and Carroll.

Said it b4, and i'll say it again, i'd kill for Chapman, cant see him leaving, but if he becomes even slightly available, wwe should go very hard! so under rated! Id trade Bruce 4 him in a snap! add a pick also!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
