Morton at FF

I was just thinking, I would love to see Cale played 1 out in the square..

Why?

He has great acceleration.. Is tall, with an even larger wingsan, and alot of people at the club keep saying he has grat hands over his head..

So what better way to show what he's got than playing him 1 out for a few 10 min bursts..

he would be quite a difficult match up, it would help alot with his development, and of course could really give us an option down there which were struggling to find..

Im not suggesting he become a FF, merely looking at the long term benefits, mixed with the fact that it will really give him some confidence to become a target..

Why not..

I for one would love to see it!

He's not strong enough, and I don't know that he'd be lightning quick on the lead either.

Well he has Exceptional take off speed! so I dont see why not!

No thanks.

I can see it now, Luke McPharlin jumping into his back and Aaron Sandilands backing back into him, both at the same time.

I guess that's one way to prematurely end his career.

When he is at least 90kg of rippling muscle it might be worth a thought. In the mean time he can show us his great hands above his head by taking some marks in the corridor instead of getting all his possesions outside it.

GO DEES - Building for the Future.

Fair enough..

I still think its worth a go 4 short bursts..

But yes, I 2 cannot wait 4 him to bulk up, look out world ;)

No!

Morton is to small and his engine is to good to waste at FF, He will gain very little from a developing point of view and will be easily shruged out of contests.

Why waste Morton's talent at FF when he would gain alot more and develop better on the wing or at HFF. He will be gromed as a CHF or a wingman (depending on his body).

He might play FF in 12 years time at the end of his career.

Whoa!

Relax buddy..

Im not saying play him FF, in a traditional sense!

Im talking about having him 1 out, from the square, move the ball down there long and fast!

For 5-10min bursts now and then, thats all!!

Cale will be a KPP, eventually.. Im just wanting to see him 1 on 1 versus a shorter opponent, as he has great speed, thus 2 quick 4 bigger defenders..

I dont want him to be our FF! ;)

I don't think the risk of him being permanently injured is actually real - as in the probaility is not signifigantly higher than playing in any other position

As for his talents being wasted, well, for one thing we haven't seen much of them, and we're not entirely concerned with actually WINNING in case you haven't noticed

To say it's counter-developmental is also rubbish, I reckon it would be excellent experience

I reckon he would do well ...

Ah well I'm sure he'll drift down from the middle into the arc for some grabs and goals throughout his career and I have a feeling quite a few from long ones from outside 50

At least he bloody well better :o

Don't worry im not angry, just enjoy exclamation marks.

This does make more sense but i think Morton would be more valuable for us at the HFF still rather than FF even if it is only for short stints. This idea might have more value in a year or two after he has packed on some muscle.

He could always stand beside the goal post and disguise himself like a stick insect.

Clever one that..

Can I just say that might be the smartest, most well rounded post I have read on any forum ever. Totally agree.

Well his brother plays a lot of the time out of the goalsquare at Tigerland. I dont know how their heights compare between the 3 brothers, but they all seem to be a fairly similar size height-wise. Obviously the other two have a lot more muscle, so there's plenty of upside in Cale filling out.

I wouldn't say exceptional take off speed. Worth a 10minute try. But that's about it. One thing you can't do on a lead is shirk the issue when a pack of players is coming at you....now can he do that?

When he bulks up and strengthens up in the upper body - which won't be all that much I would of thought with his frame - I see him in the midfield, he has the skills...........just needs improvements and the confidence to go in and get it - I almost put him in the Cooney type mould that IMO I want - but he's not there at present. Cooney was the same in his 1st year...........

Anyone agree with that.....sort of?

look at his brothers. he will bulk up. he will probably never be a david neitz, but there is no reason he wont fill out enough to hold a KP spot.

what it really depends on is how we (and he) develop him. do we put him in the gym and bulk him right up and develop him into a KP player (when he starts putting on the muscle) or do we keep him lithe and use him as a runner (he can still do strength work, but you do it in different ways for different results).

I see your point Nudge. Play him one on one in the goal square and his take off speed will let him beat his opponenant to the ball.

Its a good thing in theory, but if that plan actually worked we would be able to do it with Davey to much better effect.

He isn't big enough yet.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
