Day 3, takes the ball when keeping to a quick and takes a shy at the stumps when Marnus Labuschange is batting. Day 5, when the boot is on the other foot, "it's not in the spirit of the game".

You reap what you sow.

The Poms hypocrisy is astounding

They spend the best part of the 3 hours carrying out leg theory/bodyline where 98% of the deliveries were short and aimed at the throat & head area

That included the short pitched bowling to an obviously distressed and injured Nathan Lyon

Yet they prattle on about the spirit of cricket??  Practice what you preach England, and have a good look in the mirror

It's our players who won't be wanting to have a beer with you, McCullum

Show me a bad loser and I'll show you a loser

Bazball? Gazballs!

Crumball?

As an Englishman, I can assure you that everyone on my WhatsApp groups called both the Starc catch and JB run out in your favour. Same with the broadsheet press and sensible TV pundits over here.  All that BS about Starc not being in control of his body after the catch?? This isn’t the NFL ffs. It was a catch and when the authorities get round to clarifying the respective laws (hardly necessary in the case of the run out/calling of ‘over’), Australia’s stances on both will be vindicated.

As for Broad, he’s a rubber sole. I’d hate to captain him if I was still playing. Did you see him having the white lines (requested by the bowlers pre-match as a guide to prevent no-balls), painted over in green as they were distracting him on Day 1?  All about him. It’s embarrassing.

Looking forward to Headingley mind, should be a bit spicy. Your lads’ll cop it from the drunks on the Western Terrace but I can’t see anything other than 3-0 by the end of it all.

Stokes openly requesting dictored pitches to suit bazball ... when was that deemed to be in the spirit of cricket?

They are full of it

McCullum & Brayshaw have both tried to stump wandering batsmen on numerous occasions

How about these whinging Poms accepting the umpires decisions?

Hypocrites

McCullum

3 times in international cricket, although one was recalled by Dan Vittori as captain.  Since he’s retired he’s had a chance to reflect and decide it’s not in the ‘spirit of the game’, but curiously as coach of the English team hasn’t issued any edicts to stop his players doing the same thing (Bairstow, Foakes, and Pope), and is happy to sit on his sanctimonious high horse when an opposition keeper does the same thing.

A law unto themselves ... related to born to rule?

Atherton with the dirt in pocket to change the make-up of the cricket ball ... a fine only and didn't miss a match

Meanwhile, we set an example to the rest of the world by ousting 3 players with hefty penalties

Yet it's just us that transgressed?

Reminds me of all the tanking from numerous clubs yet apparently, we at the Demons were the only ones who crossed the line?

2023 and we still finger point without ever looking in the mirror

3rd Test

England have won the toss and elected to bowl ... green tinge on the wicket but as always, if we can get through to lunch relatively unscathed, it might be a good toss to lose

And England are batting 4th again which is often a disadvantage

Yep. Khawaja and the unit are the ones we will rely on for big scores. Good to see Murphy as he is a good bowler. Wonder what [censored] the poms will carry on with in this test.

It's just not cricket!

Yes, Wood bowling at 155kph+ is just not fair.  Serious pace!

In boxing terms England won the first session 10-7

England bowled very well and our batsmen were found out a bit

Big time. I will be happy if we make 300 but I don't think so. Lets see what Marsh can do.

Bit surprised with Green making way but I wish Mitch well

And I'd take 300 in a heartbeat!

250 and we're at least in the game especially if the green tinge and quick bounce remains in the pitch

Need a big score from Head, Marsh or Carey (or 2 decent 50's)

Edit:  Apparently Green was feeling the pinch from the Lords test (soreness?) hmmmmm

He's damn quick and could be a handful in this test ... only bowled 6 overs which is a bit puzzling

What a fantastic 100 from Mitch Marsh ... counter attacking in magnificent style

Completely swung the match around Gilchrist-style!

WOW!!!!!

2nd session to Australia 10-7

Match evenly poised but the Aussies have a chance now to post a good first innings score

If we can get to 350+ we'll be ahead in the game

Lets just make 300 first.

And yes a very good ton to Marsh. Entertaining.

I'll be slightly disappointed if we don't get to 350 now.  They are a bowler down and the ball is knackered

It was a great knock.  We were in all sorts of trouble when he went to the crease

Given the pressure and our precarious position, it was a brilliant innings, no question

Edit: Joe Root drops another catch! ... and now catches one!

Edit (2) now 7/247 eeeeek!  300 might be a bridge too far haha!

Edit (3) 8/249

Can we get to 250?

350?  A pipe dream!!!

Wood has run through us with his express deliveries.  Our tail has no answer to his potent pace

We're going to have to bowl well to stay in this match

If not for Marsh's knock, England would be well odds on to win this test

Edited by Macca

So the cricket world is enraptured by the Marsh innings and rightly so

His career to date has been hit & miss and at 31 years of age, Mitch was at the crossroads

So a gutsy innings as well, took chances and it paid off.  Clean hitting and monstered the ball.  And then picked up the vital wicket of Crawley

If Root takes that easy chance when Mitch was on 12, it's a whole different conversation and we'd be staring down the barrel of defeat in this test match

Kudos!

As for Mark Wood, our batsmen are going to have to see him off in our 2nd innings if we're going to win this match.  Bowled very impressively and is seriously fast.  He could prove to be the difference maker (or not)

The last session I've scored at 10-10 as we've got England at 3-68 at stumps.  A quick wicket or 2 in the first session tonight and we'll be in front

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
