Goodwin admitted today that the Grundy experiment has not worked. You don't get a clearer.. "he's up for trade" than that “In terms of the way they function in the team together, from a forward-half perspective; I think it’s pretty clear ... that it hasn’t quite been the success that we were hoping for – and that certainly hasn’t been all on Brodie,” Goodwin said, a day after extending his tenure as coach to the end of 2026. “We were hoping for Max to play big time forward [time] as well, and between the two of them we haven’t quite had the impact that we would have liked throughout the year, and we’ve had to look down a different path to how we structure up the forward half of the ground. “At this point, that’s impacted Brodie’s ability to play in the team in the last five or six weeks, so I think from that perspective, we acknowledge that part of it hasn’t worked.

In 2021 we had 3x 2 week breaks in our finals campaign. Worked rather well I thought

So assuming Lions beat the Saints, Port have nothing to play for on Sunday and their opponent Richmond has even less. Will be interesting to see if Port have a few Sunday morning niggles

Preuss had much better VFL forward form than Grundy but as you say he couldn't bring it to AFL level. FWIW I'd be making quiet enquiries of Goldstein re whether he wants a $400k one year top up of his retirement savings. He could have an "easy" VFL year backing up Verral and acting as a "break glass" back up for Max

Can't help but have a laugh at the AFL who were salivating over all the final 8 contenders 2 weeks ago. How will we manipulate the fixture so we'll have maximum exposure. Now all they have is a yawn fest with GWS v Blues being the only game of interest assuming Dogs can beat "cue in the rack" Geelong. Perhaps the competing clubs could take a cue from the pole vaulters last night and just declare all the games a draw. Also ironic that the one extra game of the season forced on us by the Gather round fiasco has been such a fizzer.

32 of his 65 goals came in 2021 2022..23G 24 B 2023... 2G 5B Career total 65B 52B https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Mitch_Georgiades.html

In 2011 they didn't own Docklands like they do now so it's a little easier but I think you are correct. Also impacted by the relative break for the teams playing the next week. (in 2011 the Docklands deal allowed the AFL not to play finals there on the condition that it was made up in future years. I don't think they ever did before they bought it for a few dollars.)

GWS will be peeved

You have to name your final 22 by 6pm approx on Friday night. AFL will be all over us if we pull Gawn etc on Sunday due to a dead rubber. I think we will have to take a chance/calculated risk

Simon Goodwin extends contract to end of 2026
Diamond_Jim replied to Satan's topic in Melbourne Demons
Good news I would hope that the contract addresses the salary cut he took last time which was a quite impressive act- 102 replies

You can deal with this by varying the training load. All you are doing is removing the physical bash and tackle. I'd be resting May as well. Both are 200 plus game players. I doubt they'll forget how to play in two weeks. The only reason I could see to play them is team cohesion but I think the role these two play in the gameplan can be imitated by Grundy and Tomlinson. It's a golden opportunity... Use it !!! PS: If you're worried Sunday is dry in Melbourne. They could be played in alternating halves for Casey

Couldn't regularly make the Port side pre injury and wants good dollars plus 4 year deal. As I said above... tread carefully Upside is that he is 21 and being a first rounder suggests he had ability. Has he had a 3 goal / high possession game. How did he go in the SANFL pre injury
-
why did you have to remind me All eyes on the forward connection and the small forwards for me.
-
I suspect the Eagles will offer overs. His non signing at Port is reportedly down to $$ and not being guaranteed a best 22 spot pre-injury. Tread with care is my conclusion Time to claim the so called premiership discount that the power clubs had in the past

Freo strongly represented for an underperforming team (4 players included

Just saw the McCartin footage. On the basis of earlier suspensions looks like a clear cut lack of care. Adelaide player in exposed position and McCartin drops his shoulder

We don't have one at VFL level unfortunately unless you regard TW, Laurie or AMW as midfielders

Just curious why would another club give us a player for Grundy if the trade essentially matched what we paid for him

Here's a good article listing the 202 players by club who are out of contract at season's end. I see it lists Schache who I thought had another year Melbourne (8): Luke Dunstan (unrestricted free agent), Michael Hibberd, James Jordon (unrestricted free agent), Jake Melksham (unrestricted free agent), Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Josh Schache, Deakyn Smith, Kye Turner. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/deal-or-no-deal-naming-the-202-afl-players-who-don-t-have-a-contract-for-2024-20230818-p5dxn7.html

The winners of the QF's get home PF's

VFL shopping or improving your last 6 of 22/23 doesn't happen much unless the transferee is stuck behind a senior star and can't get into the first 22/23. Why is this so? Could it be that the talent pool is so thin that there's not much at VFL level. I really don't know. For example we have a surplus of smaller flanker type players but are any a certain lock at other teams?
-
We only paid pick 27 so anything around 25-32 is fair. You could argue that his value decreased in 2023 but not by much. I wonder if we could throw in say $200k (once off not per year) and get pick 22 out of Sydney
-
Remind me please... Did we give a second or third round pick for Grundy? It's beginning to feel like returning something you bought online because when it arrives it's not quite what you expected. Have no difficulty with the original deal but I do wonder if we really thought through how it would work in practice. My vision of May kicking out with Gawn and Grundy offering options on both sides of the ground and quickly passing off to Hunter or Langdon was way off the mark.
-
Good points.... Will be interesting how they approach their rebuild. Most clubs try to avoid bottoming out and with the Tasmanian entry it's even more complicated. Geelong face the same problem but at least they haven't traded their primary draft picks yet. There's even an argument for hiring a cheaper coach and increasing your number of skills assistants for say three years
-
Most do and neither of those named are first year players. I'd like to see some figures on Richmond and the other (or near 3peats) but the turnover is (my guess) 6 players in 3 years. Renew or Whither is the general rule You also need to distinguish between depth and renewal. Not sure that they are the same
