Not sure how you arrive at that view. Practice games play an essential part in the pre season build up. They give exposure to fringe players by using extended benches and allow older players to ease into the season. Playing for points removes all of these benefits

Crowd attendances are irrelevant to the AFL as the whole thing is paid for by the "winning State" I suppose the fact that it's an extra round softens the usual screaming by clubs about losing a home game.
