Hawks racism allegations (merged thread)
Lucifers Hero replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm really struggling with this. That Clarkson and Fagan, men who are husbands and fathers would even contemplate such inhuman behaviours is rephrensible on so many levels: moral, abuse of power, racism. It is right up there with the Ess drug saga. Perhaps even worse in that it was deliberate, selective to one racial group and extended to controlling partners and family decisions that affect them for the rest of their lives. It certainly puts a moral stain on Clarkson's 4 premierships. -
I believe you are correct.

Hawks racism allegations (merged thread)

Very, very sad. Viney left in 2008 and Yze started in 2014. Not sure we should even vaugely link them or others to these horrible events. -

Even if half of that is true they should never use 'The Family Club' moniker again. -
I wonder what is best for Tomlinson? At mfc he is competing with Hibbered, Smith and Turner for a spot. He can see they have been preferred ahead of him. So a long year playing VFL awaits him. If he goes now he is 29 and could convert a one year contract @ $500k to a 3 year contract at $350K. Next year he will 30 and OOC. So he may figure it is best to be traded this year. I note that a poster said that he is preparing for life after football so he may be happy to just see out his mfc contract.

Just to clarify. I believe the rule is to use at least 3 picks at the National Draft. However, that includes using a late pick to upgrade a rookie as we will this year for Chandler. That could be our pick 86. Clubs can delist as many as they want and 6-10 is not uncommon. I suspect there are more changes to come.
-
AFL reporting Meek's preferred club is Hawthorn. Freo saying they want to keep him as he is under contract. Normally I would think that is posturing but they are about to lose 3-5 tall players so I can see they would want to keep him.

@Demonland I just noticed that another Delistings related thread was opened a few hours ago on the Trade Board. While technically it is about Delistings and targets generally it has defaulted to discussing mfc delistings/changes somewhat duplicating this thread.. We also have a Changes thread on the Trade Board. Can there be some merging of threads. please? If this thread remains maybe it is moved to the Trade Board...

Updated for Rosman's delisting and M.Brown's retirement. Shame for Rosman. Delighted Mitch went out on a Premiership high. Edit: Tomlinson is contracted to 2024. I will fix info in next version

On Tomlinson. He joined us at a reported $500k p.a. That is an expensive player to have running round at Casey. I would say the club will take a 3rd or 4th round pick to move the $ out. Its would be a mini 'salary dump'. He came to us as an FA so owes us nothing in terms of draft picks. As I've mentioned in several other threads, Taylor doesn't use draft picks other than first and second round so if we get a 3rd or 4th round pick, I'm confident we will convert it to something better.
-
He recovered from his knee injuries. Salem's ongoing issue is o.p. which he played with last year and this year. Its a difficult one to fix. Joel Smith missed a whole year. Just look at what happened to Taylor Adams when he stretched too far a few weeks ago.

Ess is the front runner and they have picks: 4, 22, 40, 58, 76. Can't see it being 22 more likely 40. Hopefully, Diodoro doesn't offer something stupid like 58 and slows down getting the deal done.
-
I've put your question here rather than in the 'Salary Dump' thread. To me he is like ANB; plays a very valuable role but if we trade either we don't have someone of their size at Casey to step in. Most of those looking for selection are a fair bit shorter That isn't to say they can't do the roles but we can't have to many shortish players in the fwd line. I would rather shop ANB around, again.

Trading Draft Picks for Salary Dumps!
Lucifers Hero replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
I believe Geelong and GWS were keen but Grundy will nominate only mfc. And we are honest brokers. Nonetheless, I think it could be a complex trade, especially now that the AFL is allowing defacto 'salary dump for pick trades'. This new ruling could have shifted the goal posts a little. Too many permutations to speculate on. But who knows, if Coll get some juicy picks from GCS (my speculation only) they might pass some on to us as part of the Grundy trade. -
Thanks. That makes a difference. Lots of clubs in the running then.

Trading Draft Picks for Salary Dumps!
Lucifers Hero replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
clubs-allowed-to-salary-dump-in-a-major-change-to-afl-trade-rules An interesting twist: "Gold Coast has midfielder Brayden Fiorini on a significant contract next year, but he has been squeezed out of the Suns’ young and talented midfield. He has had discussions with several clubs, including Collingwood, about a move and could be available in exchange for an insignificant draft pick, provided the recipient club takes over his contract". GCS have picks: 7, 25, 31, 34, 43, 52, 67, 70, 79 and will probably get #5 from Adelaide for Rankine. So lots of 2nd and 3rd round picks GCS are unlikely to use. Fiorini is said to be on $600k for 2023. It is conceivable Coll take all of his contract and pick up a few good 2nd round picks and give back a late nothing pick which GCS won't use. It would be a salary dump dressed up as a trade. Coll could fit him into their sal cap with a 3 year contract @ average $350 a year and timing it to suit player retirements -
Hawks have put their hat in the ring. So four clubs with interest: GWS, Eagles and Demons. That Meek has requested a trade suggests he isn't coming. If he was he would know he is part of the Jackson trade. We may have lost interest or perhaps he is testing the market before committing to us. Reckon he would fancy his chances of a regular 22 spot at the Hawks more than with us. Ditto at WCE and he is a West Australian. Given all that I doubt he is coming to mfc. Edit: Just read this on foxfooty: “GWS is the most likely, but Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda and Geelong are all showing interest in Meek".

3 Things we can bank on next year
Lucifers Hero replied to Gawndy the Great's topic in Melbourne Demons
We will win the flag. We will win the flag We will win the flag -
I guess we will get what the club the player has chosen will agree to. I don't mind if a player is traded for a 3rd draft pick; 4th round is a bit of a stretch. In another thread I noted that for the last 3 years Taylor has used only picks in the1st and 2nd rounds. So to me it looks a policy, a smart one at that as the talent gets pretty thin after pick #35. Essentially, any 3rd or 4th round picks we have/get we package them up for a higher pick or trade them for future picks. So if for example, we get a 3rd round pick for a player and it helps us package that with another 3rd round pick for a second round pick I'm happy with that as we (theoretically) get a better quality player than the one we let go.

Gee, nice of you to ignore all the relevant information for post 2nd round selections in my post. Not! You are hanging your hat on rookie selections which by definition are temporary or to 'try out'. No-one expects many of them to become best 22 players but Chandler and Turner might Have a look at my post again and consider JT's policy of only keeping 1st and 2nd round picks. A smart strategy don't you think? If you can't see the strategy you are being disingenuous and wasting eveyone's time. I'm out!

I'll answer the question for you. Picks over #40 since 2017: 2017: Oska Baker (pick 48, 3rd round) - still on our list 2018: Aaron Nietschke (pick 53, 3rd round) - retired due to 3 ACL's 2018: Marty Hore (pick 56, 4th round) - played a valuable role in 2019 when we had a big injury list. Had an ACL injury and retired. 2018: Toby Bedfored (pick 75, 5th round) - still on our list and seemingly in demand by other clubs 2019: Zero selections. Highest pick #32: Trent Rivers. Premiership player 2020: Zero selections. Highest pick #35: Fraser Rosman, taken as a 'project player' and still on our list. 2021: Zero selections. Late pick used for Taj Woewodin taken as F/S - still on the list. I'm not sure what your definition of 'fail' is but I don't see any on that list. Look carefully and you will see that for the last 3 years JT has, I think deliberately, not used a pick over #35 preferring to trade later picks up or trade them out for future picks. I really don't know what you are on about criticising JT for his later round selections! Drafting from rounds 1 and 2 and cash in the rest looks a damn good policy to me.
-
Hunt was in the 50's somewhere. Re the bolded sentence, how many picks has Taylor used since 2017 over pick 40 and which ones have been a fail? For the purpose of the exercise leave out the preseason and mid year drafts as they are for Rookies which are generally for short term needs..
-
I hear what you say. This is about delistings. Trades are another topic and presumably are covered in the 'Changes' thread or in individual player threads. As @old55posted, potential trades will open opportunities for new players.
-
We have only two candidates for delisting: Baker and Rosman. Jackson is OOC and asked to be traded. The rest of the OOC players are reported to have been offered contracts and M.Brown reportedly will retire. So don't expect too much delisting news.

Trading Draft Picks for Salary Dumps!
Lucifers Hero replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
I agree with all that. But 'dumping salary' can be made to look like 'dumping players' very easily.
