  1. If Jennings overstepped his remit that is an issue with Jennings not the reason to cease the role. Many clubs have a strategy coach, including Clarkson. Interestingly when Geelong (Bomber), Richmond (Hardwick) and Collingwood (Buckley) did their big reviews they took tasks off the senior coach and/or taught them to delegate and it did wonders delivering premierships and GF appearances. I would be concerned if we were doing the opposite and putting more work on Goodwin. He has more than enough to worry about without doing all the strategy work.
  2. That would concern me. Goodwin, Plapp and Chaplin inexperienced and we don't have a forward coach. They didn't do well when we hit rough water. Jennings' role was 'strategy', effectively our 'brains trust'. He served us very well for until this year. But so many things went wrong this year it can't be put down to his strategy work. Goodwin needs more and better help than he had last year not less. Extra unnecessary burden on him if Jennings is not replaced.
  3. @Mach5 has also indicated we have filled the vacant positions which I've interpreted as 3 vacancies will have 3 replacement. Hopefully it isn't a case of the club thinking someone is over the line and then found to not be joining us. What we know: Richardson for McCartney, the line coach (hopefully for forward ) referred to in the article for Rawlings. That leaves the Jennings strategy role. Hopefully, we will still replace him. Maybe M5 can shed light on this.
  4. Garbo's post below clarifies the difference between Rich and GWS second rd pick vs end of second rnd pick Thanks Garbo. Just to clarify the criteria. The AFL essentially look at Age and Contract $. They don't look at contract length. The bands are: 1st round (after natural pick) End of first round 2nd round (after natural pick) End of second round. We don't know where in the End of 2nd Round (Band 4) Tomlinson came in at. He could be on the edge of a 2nd Round pick (Band 3). So we can't say that we overpaid, underpaid or that Tomlinson is on $xxx. fwiw this article says his contract is $500 pa Tomlinson Trade I don't really care tbh. I was simply trying to answer SWYL's question but didn't get it quite right. Tricked by #39 and #40 looking the same for the two grand finalists.
  5. Richmond got end of 2nd comp pick (#39) for Ellis and he is reportedly on $600k pa for 5 years. So Tomlinson would have to be in the same range to get the same comp pick #40
  6. What do folks make of this: Mahoney: “Angus is contracted to us and he is not going anywhere. Fremantle made it very clear there were some reports he was in Perth, but it was nothing to do with the Fremantle Football Club.” Fremantle’s Peter Bell was equally as bemused, declaring he wasn’t keen to speculate on potential players the club could sign. “Well he’s a contracted player for Melbourne. A very good player,” Bell said...“I’d prefer not to comment on other players that we are or aren’t interested in. I’m not going to speculate on Angus, he’s a contracted player.” Brayshaw Rumours Bell being didn't shut the conversation down. Very coy.
  7. It seems the new CBA failed to gain 75% player agreement. Relationships are getting freyed. AFLW dispute CBA Fails The good fold at the AFLPA do not know much about how to win women over: The AFLPA stressed to the players on Sunday that “all members have provided us the authority to make decisions on their behalf. As such we could have entered into the CBA on players’ behalf without taking this to a vote”. How condescending! Are they really saying: "... we know what is best for you...just sign here..."
  8. One wonders whether Preuss is then doomed to life at Casey and he still has two years to go on his contract.
  9. Gus doesn't strike me as a 'mummy's boy' and follow his family. I think the Brayshaw's are made of sterner stuff. And, his partner is Danny Frawley's daughter Danielle. A good reason to stay in Melbourne.
  10. Dodoro is bluffing. His grandstanding is just show for supporters. Joey is an UFA next year and can walk to Sydney and Ess will get a mid first round comp pick. They will take a higher 1st round pick this year if Sydney offer it. I reckon if they do offer pick 5 they will want something back from Ess.
  11. "Guy confirmed that the Pies have offered a two-year deal, with three-year contracts on offer from the Demons and Lions...He declined to elaborate on whether the Magpies have increased the financial element of their offer..." Pies Optimistic I wonder what the Pies equivalent of Carlton's brown-paper-bag is!! Or a faux job with a sponsor ala the WCE to McGovern!!
  12. Good point but is it enough to swing it our way? We have more long haul trips because of Alice and Darwin (and 2 to Perth in each of last two years).
  13. So summarising the above advantages Lions have over Demons: Full club acilities (even if not great better than the make shift we have) Better/more stable forward line Stable and proven medical/fitness staff. Ours are being overhauled and Burgess impact not yet known. Stable and more experienced coaching panel. Better odds that they play finals in 2020 Our 2018 and their 2019 success net out. Our advantages: Two blockbuster games at the G: Anzac Eve and QB. And staying in Melb might give us a tiny edge except we are next door to the Pies. Not a betting person but not liking our chances.
  14. I can not conceive the club would not replace the departed coaches. He may have just worded 'no more new coaches' poorly and meant the new coaches just haven't joined us yet.
  15. I would be worried if there are no more coaches in terms of the roles required. It seems Richardson's role will primarily be supporting Goodwin and the other coaches. What about other roles: Forward Coach (Rawlings), Strategy (Jennings) Player Development (Macca) We will have Goodwin with Plapp and Chaplin as line coaches. Process that for a few seconds. All 3 are first time incumbents in their roles with very little experience. This year they struggled. How will they manage with 2 or 3 less direct coaches next year? If the reason, as some have surmised, is to save money in our sal cap we have our football spend all wrong. My hobby horse all year has been to have an AFL level experienced forward coach. It just horrifies me that we would not have one at all. Mahoney hesitated for a while before answering the coaching question. I'm praying that his response was just keeping his powder dry for now.
  16. Oliver has a history of shoulder surgery. September 25, 2018: Oliver 2018 shoulder surgery "Clayton injured both his shoulders during the year and will require surgery... Oliver will not begin contact training until January at the earliest. "He was unable to complete many contact drills at training in the last two months, so to perform the way that he did in that period is remarkable." That was 12 months ago. Last year he had the surgery after the bnf. Could be the same this year. Absolutely amazing that he played so well in 2018 with those injuries And his performance in 2019 equally as amazing if the shoulders have again been an issue. It is conceivable that he needed work again. But would like to hear more than a rumour.
  17. Classy as always. He not only fulfilled a childhood dream he captained our beloved club thru some of its darkest times. He did it with distinction.
  18. If you don't rate him I would rather stick with Charlie. See if he gets over his second year blues.
  19. Lewis Taylor? Jason Taylor et al were keen on him in his draft year. iirc the plan was to take him at #9 if Salem was off the table. Lewis won the Rising Star award so has some talent. I wonder why is has fallen down the pecking order this year. His height/size maybe?
  20. That is what my post was questioning...
  21. An interesting comment: Cleary said the Lions’ medical department was a big sell.trade-period-rumours-whispers Tough for us to compete on that one.
  22. If he gets that he will roughly equal our highest paid players: May and Lever the only Demons around that mark. At a guess, Max might be getting close. Huge risk for a perenniallt injured player. It won't go down well if he breaks down next year, especially after our other big plays in the aforementioned May and Lever. Not to mention it will deliver pick #17 to the Pies!
  23. Crikey, I hope that is a guess...? FA comp pick assessment made based on all AFL players aged over 25. "First-round picks are awarded to players who rank in the top 5 per cent, based on the points, while end-of-first-round picks are given for free agents in the 5-15 per cent bracket. Second-round picks ...are for free agents in the 15-30 band. End of second round is for those ranked in the 30-50 per cent group" .afl-s-secret-formula-for-free-agency-compensation We are offering a 3 year deal for a 27 year old so it must be a huge $ base contract to generate a first round comp pick ie #17. If the pies get that or end of first round (#20) they are laughing all the way to the bank and won't try to keep him.
