Very accurate on all counts. Interesting they have us at 9 o'clock to 'bounce back'. I assume in context of the title that means to make finals which most would agree with. Last year we had 14 H&A wins, two finals wins and end up 4th. People are claiming that was an aberration and our club is being overhauled as a result of 2019. To put to bed the '2018 was an aberration' claim we must make finals with 12/13 wins and win one final. If we don't, the review, coaching and other staff changes will be spoken of as a failure. We can't underestimate the repercussions of not getting back near our 2018 achievements for sponsors, memberships, FTA exposure, prime time slots and stand-alone facilities. Everyone is prepared to wait to see how 2020 pans out but fall too far short of 2018 then the fall out will be severe. I remember the joy and excitement of last September of getting finals tickets. The excitement at the G. The trip home after beating Geelong and Hawks. I want that again for me, for us and for our club.

Making finals is a low bar. You might be satisfied to simply make finals. Most won't. And, the club cannot afford to simply 'make finals'. Well, my expectation is to win a final and anything less will be a failure by the club. And the off-field staff changes that are to happen will also have failed.

And making finals in 2020 is supposed to be an achievemen? Winning a final is the minimum to claim we have improved and show that 2018 wasn't an aberration. It is the minimum for fans, sponsors, FTA time slots, fixtures etc etc. Anything less than winning a final and we will be a financial basket case again. And we can kiss good-bye to our own club facilities.

Agree it is rare for a club to not give in to a player. Geelong/Kelly was an example of the exception. Sure their refusal was only good for a year so the end result is the same.

Just for the record, Geelong refused to trade Kelly last year because he was contracted and couldn't get the trade value they wanted.

Thanks for the contract info folks. I can't find any public advice from the club on those players. A poster reported that ANB signed four weeks ago but not released. Could be happening with others. Shall update table as and when the club makes public releases. If I miss them will be grateful to posters letting me know. Cheers

A solid hint from Goodwin that Max will be captain next year? "He's someone who has worked his way through to a space where he wants to be great. That's a great thing for our footy club to have someone who can pick up the boys that are coming through, lead them in the right way and demand the behaviours that we need to take this club forward again." Captain Max? Can't wait till it happens! As an aside, found his kicking boots today: 3.1. Great leading from the front!

Given your quirky sense of humour, I'm guessing that is in that vein. Just in case it is a serious idea, 'no' to co-coaches. My experience is two people can't effectively 'job-share' unless it is highly structured. Coaching isn't in that category. I'll clarify my comment in the post you quoted. Richo seems a genuine guy and given his background he would be great as development coach or as a senior assistant responsible for xxx. My negative comments are when it is suggested he be Goodwin's mentor or some hybrid mentor/senior assistant role ala Macca's first job at the club. Firstly, I doubt he has the right experience for the mentor role or to help Goodwin avoid 'rookie' pitfalls ala those made during our off-season and pre-season which Goodwin and Lewis have acknowledged. Secondly, the hybrid mentor/senior assistant role is an almost impossible role to make work: It means a senior assistant reports to the senior coach who gives advice, counsel to and holds him accountable. Whereas a mentor provides those things to the senior coach and holds. So with the hybrid, who really reports to who? What happens when they disagree. Who has the ultimate say? With Macca his hybrid role gradually changed where he no longer formally held the mentor role and became part of the coaching panel. Macca did a great job in the hybrid role for several years but in the end it broke down. A poster here I highly respect @Mach5and seems to have some insight into what happens at the club, posted in the McCartney thread: "It is about philosophical differences. Goodwin knows what he wants from McCartney; McCartney thinks there’s a difference between what he wants and what he needs." At the end of the day reporting lines and authority need to be really clear to the incumbents and the people who deal with them. Hybrid roles with blurred reporting lines don't fit that. But would like to wait and see what role Richo is actually given.

According to Wikipedia he was at the Pies for one year in 2007 as Development Coach and at Port, again for one year, as Senior Assistant/Coaching Director. I probably shouldn't comment further until I can see the article and there is an announcement.

Macca came in as development coach and mentor to Goodwin. Richardson seems a really honest, hardworking bloke but I just don't see that he has the credentials for the coach mentor part: He hasn't shown he can build a successful game plan. The saints list management was poor in his tenure. Doesn't have coaching finals experience and then a long time ago Hasn't been at a 'successful' club Hasn't had any non-coaching football roles. With that background I just don't see how he could guide Goodwin thru those areas and in particular help him avoid the pitfalls he fell into in the off-season. Will be relieved if it is as a development coach. I see no success in his AFL coaching career spanning 15 years for him to be given other roles.

I think the article says that clubs that get AFL assistance, present to the Commission on a 'rotating basis'. It may just have been our turn or we may have been 'summoned' as you say because our year has been so bad. I agree we will probably post a profit this year. But I suspect the financial projections for 2020 don't look too good, especially if Jaguar don't sign up again. Loss of Bentleigh club pokie revenue (I think it is 2020), membership drop off, smaller crowds, and the sponsor impact of downgraded fixture and FTA time slots. So we may be asking for help on various fronts to ward off a nasty financial result in 2020. Edit: @Lord Nev just saw your post about 2020 revenues. Fully agree.

I wonder if this means that Jaguar have decided to not sponsor us again; it was a one year deal. Hence our need for more AFL funding. Interesting to note that Gil said in an Age podcast that St Kilda is being financially supported to the same level as the two franchise clubs. Coincidence? Doubt it.

I would think the case to not give GC pick 2 will come from all clubs as all will be disadvantaged. We are there to 'outline financial and business plans'. Sounds like we are asking for money again. So much for the mfc that was financially solid and stable just 12 months ago. Sad.

It beggars belief that the whole football department took their eye off the ball and just thought the good times would simply roll around again. For those that thought: "It is the pre-season stupid". We now know from a number of sources that it wasn't. The primary issue was the Off-Season! To me the article talks to the lack of experience of our leaders, coaches and managers. I've talked many times on DL of their respective lack of experience in their given roles. Lewis' comments just reinforce for me that Goodwin needs a coaching mentor/director to help him avoid such rookie errors. Like Lewis said 'you don't know, what you don't know'. That is what a coach mentor/director is for.

At a recent game I sat next to someone, not in the club but close to our fitness department. Apparently, the club was very disappointed with the (lack of) condition of players after the off-season. Even the players who had surgery could have done more on their rehab in the off-season to be ready for pre-season. It is second hand but consistent with Lewis' comments. At a guess, the players who have stepped up this year are the ones more likely to have done all the off-season work. I recall Roos saying players need to be in tip top condition at the start of pre-season; pre-season is not to get fit; it is to develop skills and learn game plans. It is time the players felt the blowtorch so I'm glad Lewis has as no-one else in the club could publicly say it. It is what the players do in the off-season (and skills and game plan learning in the pre-season) that will best place them and the club for a successful 2020.

Healy said a few weeks ago that Viney shouldn't have been made co-captain as '...he was not in control of his game... and said so at the time. That sounds like an essential criteria, among several others. Max is the only one that fulfills that and the other criteria: match winner, media performer, good front man for sponsors, affable, respected, motivational, works hard and drives standards. Jack fails on several of those. May, Lever, Mcdonald etc are not in control of their games/current roles. The VC/LS from them or Jetta, Melksham. Let the players have a say.

I think it takes a good relationship and healthy mutual respect to be a mentor and the mentoree needs to want to be mentored. Am not aware of a relationship between Goodwin and Lyon so doubt it as a mentor. There are probably better candidates for a coaching director.

od, if things revert to the pre Roos era, it will be time to employ 'the mercy rule'. Just snuff us out! For now I hold the faith and continue in hope - hell it is the only option available atm.

That was my first thought. Saints appear to be the front runners and reportedly have already put a proposal to Roughy. He has a close relationship with Ratten so if he gets the senior coaching role (which looks likely) I doubt he will come to us. Saints a more known quantity on many fronts.
