I understand your point 'stuie' re Toumpas but if you really asked Roos I think he would want the same type of player in his midfield. Tough, strong, head over the ball, run forward and back, contested ball winners who also spread. Sounds a bit like the Sydney midfield. I don't agree with the idea of inside and outside players, all players need to be able to get their own ball and all players need to know how to use it. Jimmy has been disappointing to date but he has time to get it right. So far he hasn't shown game sense as he hasn't got to where the ball is enough. As for elite skills he certainly has a good kicking style but has often got it wrong in application. Don't assume Salem is the same type of player as Toumpas because they look alike. Salem at junior level was known for his attack on the ball and tackling plus of course his long left foot.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - DOM TYSON

We wouldn't have had the currency to get Martin, probably not Kelly either given that we had Hogan already and there was a bit of dealing to pick up Viney later in the draft. -
Maybe we just had the wrong kids.

Practice Match - Melbourne v Hawthorn @ Casey Fields

Saying yesterday was disappointing would be an understatement. It was unacceptable and reading between Roos lines I think that's the message the players would have received after the game, he's too good a media performer to come out and say it in the media even though, I think it was Barrett was firing in some leading questions. I think the main thing that stands out for me is that it is not a quick fix. I thought the talent on the list might be good enough for us to get a bit of a lift and that still may be the case but to get to the top level is going to take some time. Given that seems to be the case I believe that Jackson and Roos can't just come in for a couple of years and hand over to understudies before the job is well in hand. As a club we need these 2 key men to commit to at least the next 3 seasons, they can't swan in for a couple of years, wave the magic wand and say all is well, we'll be off now. These guys are surely smart enough to know it just doesn't work that way. -
Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>

Interesting talking to an Essendon supporter yesterday spinning the story that ASADA have stuffed up etc. his point was that even a murder trial doesn't run this long. My point was that it's not a trial, it's an investigation and some murder investigations last many years. Too many people, including Essendon supporting journo's have some fixation on the time the investigation is taking. I know it would be good to have everything wrapped up so we can get on with the new season but life doesn't work that way. Not everything can be packaged up neatly. -

Same here and I agree with what you have written. At this stage I'm very disappointed in Jimmy, I hope he can get it together and I know it is early days. -

The similarity is there but I think Dom has better evasiveness. In the long run we could get a fair bit of Black with a mix of Mitchell and Pendles. -
Maybe it's just looking to see a good game of footy.

Any stat in isolation apart from the final score is misleading.

They've probably lost the paperwork anyway or didn't keep records. -
We won't agree on this one 'Machsy', but I think he was an excellent kick, just didn't get enough of it. In one of the coaches reports last year it was said on a particularly windy day Taggert was the only one who handled the conditions by foot. He's gone and I hope for him it was the kick up ... that he needed. Good luck to the kid.

I've not doubt they played the biggest part but even the AFL were surprised at the emails, letters and calls received from members...as I said in some small part. Members vote with their feet 'Sat', they renew or don't, go to games or don't, support or don't. Very few go to AGM's and as you note most don't like to talk but they all have an opinion.
-
You are 100% correct but we have no influence over how the game is played, selection etc. yet all have an opinion which is why we use the forum. We also are a club and these lessons need to be understood by members if and when board elections come up, that's where we may have some influence. Pressure from members to the AFL helped in some small way to get them on board and bring Jackson in. We have continually made the same mistakes and it is a good thing if the members of the club understand or at least discuss them so we as members can at least vote with our feet. Nothing wrong with that. ...and as 'old dee' points out above, winning is what will heal the wounds or at least paint over them for a time.
-
Well we won one and lost another close one. You might not want to believe this but the only stat that really matters is the final score. Sydney Premiership win 2012 Hawthorn inside 50's 61 score 81, Sydney inside 50's 43 score 91. Looks like we are already converting better than Sydney. Look, I'm sure we will improve our inside 50's but at the end of the day all that matters is we score more than the opposition. If that means we play kick to kick around the back line for a bit then go forward and score so be it. Stats really are misleading in isolation as is that Sydney Hawthorn stat by the way.

It's not a big concern at all mate, it's pre season and we've looked the most coherent I've seen us look for a long time.
-
That's what coming from a winning team does. I think he is a good pick up, whether he plays a lot of senior footy or not his attitude is a real bonus...and he can play.

He did make a couple in that game but his clearance work was class and the Tiges gave away a few free's in the middle trying to keep him off the ball. -

He does. -
Geelong have been very good at bringing Hawthorn's kicking unstuck in the past with their pressure on the ball carrier and target. Unfortunately a lot of our poor kicks the other night were not under pressure and were skill errors. One of the things we are working on by drafting and trading for elite kicks like Vince & Salem.
-
You really are having a bad morning 'master'. Poor old George Stone is going to have to be 100 years plus in the game and then may not have proven himself in your eyes. As for the 5 hours a week bit, now you're trolling. You are seriously not that stupid as your regular posts show, might not agree with them but at least some thought goes in.
-
He was an excellent kick, good decision maker and pretty good overhead. Biggest problem was his focus, he would drift in and out of the game too much. Injury in his first season didn't help things plus coming into the club during the last few years was not a bonus either. Playing in SA this year and I hope he works hard enough to get another crack at it down the track.

No...Port came into last season with some very good pre season form under it's belt and had the nucleus of a very good team (a bit like us). St Kilda are way off Port, their pre season form has been poor and they are still reliant on ageing stars. The only light they have is injured and out for at least the first half of the season. As for Alan Richardson, he has only coached one game of AFL for Ports first loss last season. He was rated by some as an assistant but as we all know the Jury is out on whether he can hold down the senior post, Neeld and Watters anyone.
