Cal Twomey has posted his October phantom form guide for October and has expanded it to a top 35. https://www.afl.com.au/news/685788/cal-twomeys-phantom-form-guide-top-draft-prospects-october-ranking
  2. While I pretty much agree with your comments on Mac Andrew, it seems a fait accompli for him to be drafted in the top 15 and out of our reach. While he has some outstanding physical traits and decent skills for a big man, there must be a massive amount of projection of his potential for clubs to be willing to part with a first rounder for him. From what I've seen of him, his game sense/running patterns aren't at a high level. Certainly not as coveted as Luke Jackson was which was highlighted by our recruiters in the draft video of the to hell and back documentary series. Let's also not forget that Luke Jackson was widely seen as a mid teens pick by the draft "experts." These same experts are now stating Mac is a top 10 pick on less than half the exposed game time and inferior stats to Luke in every category. Macs potential impact in front of goal I believe is also overstated having only kicked to 2 goals in 6 NAB league games. He also finished 13th in the stingrays best and fairest. To my eyes, Mac Andrew is impressive when the ball is put on his head and he can out stretch his opponents. When around the ball in the ruck he is also impressive at out leaping his counterpart and also following up with repeated efforts at ground level where he also has great skills for a man of his size. Perhaps the impact on the game that Luke has had has put a premium on talented mobile big men with these traits and is what is pushing him up the board. It will take Mac alot longer to get their in my view, if it all.
  3. Possibly the best kick on our list already. I think in due course we will see him on a wing and delivering the ball inside 50 post his 'apprenticeship' in the backline.
  4. Collingwoods pick 27 now gone to the tigers for pick 38, 40 and a future 3rd. Collingwoods move prevents our pick 37 from coming in earlier but aids our picks 49 and 57 to come in an extra selection. Tigers now have 7, 15, 26, 27 and 28. A mini-rebuild of sorts?
  5. Quite possibly right. I've mainly put him there as the club I believe have said they would ideally like another developing ruck on the list and Conway is, allegedly, the best one in the draft. He is largely predicted to go from the second round onwards. We then had half a dozen rucks taken in the midseason draft this year which may take other clubs out of the market for a Ruck. Unless you're an exceptional talent like Jackson, Naitinui or Grundy, rucks tend to slide into the back half of the draft. Tigers most likely the risk with 3 consecutive picks at 26, 27 and 28 and most likely in the market for a ruck as well.
  6. We lose extra spots from 1. Austin Bradtke. He was a category B rookie and was allowed as an addition to the total of 42. 2. Recruitment and now retention of Turner midseason due to a players on our long term injury list. He essentially was an extra player for us during the year. Declase was as well but has since been delisted. Essentially we had 42 + a cat B rookie and 2 x midseason draftees making a total of 45 for the year. We have to shed 3 players to get back to 42, although we can add a cat B rookie again if we like (think we can have two even) What DeeSpencer said
  7. A thread to discuss our second live pick at the 2021 AFL draft. With father/son and NGA selections, as well as the ability of trading picks from now right through to and including draft night, this number is surely going to change before we call out our second player. While our list is in healthy shape in both age demographic and positional depth, we may look to target a developing Ruck for both insurance for next year and an eye to a post Gawn era. Toby Conway is one we might look at he is still on the board with Cal Twomey ranking him at #26 in his latest form guide and labels him the best ruck prospect in the draft. Toby Conway Ruckman
 204cm/90kg
24/4/03
Geelong Falcons/Vic Country The best young ruck in the draft who can start things for his midfielders at centre bounces and is also handy around the ground as a drop-back player or move-forward target. Conway, a cousin of Sydney's Tom McCartin and his brother and former Saints forward Paddy, performed well for the Geelong Falcons and Vic Country this season before the season was cut short. If its another midfielder we're after to suppliment the list following the departures of Jones and AVB, Corey Warner from WA might fit the bill. Not ranked in Cal Twomeys top 30, he sneaks into that very same position on draft centrals latest draft rankings. #30 Corey Warner East Fremantle/Western Australia - Balanced Midfielder 07/10/2003 - 182cm - 74kg Snapshot: Warner is a hard-running midfielder who can play both inside and out, breaking forward with intent and a penetrating left foot kick. There is another 'C.Warner' running around, this time of the Corey variety after brother Chad was drafted to Sydney in 2019. The younger sibling skippered Aquinas College this year and managed four League games for East Fremantle, plying his trade out on the wing. He traded that outside role for one at the centre bounces when playing against his peers, averaging 24 disposals in nine Colts games and matching that average across his three finals appearances. While somewhat dependent on his left side, Warner gets good penetration on the end of bursting runs forward, carrying away from the midfield with purpose. He also made a State Under 19s appearance in 2021 and has risen steeply into second round contention. 8. Fair enough, to be honest he's probably not what we need anyway. I'm genuinely curious to see how this first round plays out and who we end up with.
  9. More impressive to my eyes. Seems stronger and harder at the ball as well as having greater agility and has the strength to stand up in a tackle and get an effective disposal away. At 192cm he could be a beast. Maybe @Pennant St Dee will have some insights into him and how he is rated over in WA?
  10. If a quality key position player is available I would think we would have to look long and hard at them. Amiss and Van Rooyen in particular. Otherwise there seems to be a plethora of mids/half backs that will be around the mark. One that caught my attention was Matthew Johnson from WA. Tall midfielder with great decision making and skills. Also loves the contested stuff which we know the dees value highly. Might go before our pick though.

I presume there won't be a ban on trades until the last hour like years gone by? Not that anything exciting is going to happen anyway.
  12. Also completely glosses over the fact they traded out pick 2. With North now likely not to bid on Daicos, they could have used it to choose another player before a Daicos bid which in turn would have required even less points to match. I get that's more of a 2021 onfield performance issue and they would have been expecting to finish much higher, but any other club would be crucified for that deal coming back to bite them. "Geniuses" lol.
  13. Great players, not a single defender though.
  14. I have a gut feeling that later on in his career he will swing forward and become a weapon, similar to Yze. Absolute gun.
  15. Bontempelli went ok for a half. Could rotate off the bench as an impact player.

Sounds like GWS really weren't happy with Essendons conduct last year. Hope they make them pay through the nose or just hold Hill to his contract. Will Josh Mahoney play a role in Essendons trading?
  17. While important to recognise biases such as these, I would argue that (pushing NGA factors to the side) Mac Andrew would have complimented our list profile brilliantly. Premiers just above highlighted the the current state of play re ruckman on a list. With Mac Andrew being as highly touted as he is, having him develop underneath Gawn and Jackson could have provided him a fantastic platform to transition into the team in 3-4 years time as Gawns career winds down. Jackson takes on the primary ruck role, Mac Andrew steps into the forward/ruck position and we again have the dominate ruck-ruck/forward combo for the next 10-15 years.

Something that seems to be going under the radar, in the media at least, is the incredible situation Collingwood finds itself in where they traded away this years 1st rounder. From afl.com re North Melbourne firming on Horne-Francis for their first pick. "...rivals now believing they are more unlikely to place a bid on Collingwood father-son Nick Daicos." So in affect, Collingwood could have had Finn Callaghan (or other) and Daicos but their poor year means they will now miss out on an extra top 3 pick. Then there is the trading away of multiple picks just to get points to match for the one player. Glad our club is far better run.

If we're only taking 1 or 2 picks into the draft then I would presume that we would move on pick 37, 49 and 57 into something better for this year or into next. 49 and 57 may come in by half a dozen spots or more and could be valuable for clubs still wanting points.
  20. If we go for a mid I hope Josh Ward slides to us. Was super impressive in the games he played earlier in the season that I saw. Zac Taylor is one that has good raps on him for his kicking and I believe he has good pace. Half back could see Wilmot or maybe Sinn? Outside mids could have a look at Chesser or Wanganeen-Milera. Or my preference would be to have a developing key position player. Jye Amiss, Jacob van Rooyen and Jack Williams are all WA talls that performed well throughout the year. I'll have to do a bit more research into them but think we could do with a developing tall after Brown and McDonald closing in on 30 and a yet unproven Weideman. Seems an open sort of draft after the first handful of picks which makes things interesting and hard to predict.

  23. All good, they change things on the fly these days.
  24. With Chandler possibly leaving, do we do the salary dump deal with Gold Coast and pick up Macpherson as small forward back up and pick 19?
  25. Not unless he's bid on after pick 20. They changed the rules at the end of last year so a team that selects him prior to 20 will get him and we won't be able to match. Father/sons are different and old rules still apply.
