AFLX Revamped
Putting aside the like or dislike of AFLX for a moment and the whole marvel super-hero stuff, it's possibly better to view what we will see as a spectacle. Just my take - not gospel. 16 players on the rectangular field as opposed to 22 in Soccer & NFL, 26 for League & 30 for Union Open footy with little or no congestion and very little tackling and because of that, the injury factor is reduced. However, Docklands has a history of throwing up non-contact injuries so there is likely to be an injury or 2 (hopefully not a bad one) No tribalism, rivalries, fantasy sports or gambling aspect. No club theme songs but they've probably organised some stuff to liven up the crowd pre-match Keepings off will be at a premium so we should see lots of players running with the ball taking a bounce or 2. The players will be able to exhibit their skills without the need to get rid of the ball in a split-second. Kicking to position with players running to receive/mark could take precedence over 15 metre hit-up passes that we often see in the AFL. But we could see both in equal measure. How the crowd reacts to goals will be interesting - last year there were uncomfortable moments of silence so they might pipe in some crowd noise. Nothing is sacred. The super-goal will almost certainly get the most reaction especially when that super-goal is worth double points. But what that reaction will be is anyone's guess. The crowd figures could be artificially boosted but the actual crowd could be boosted by some freeby's anyway. They won't want an empty stadium The TV numbers is the biggie - there isn't a lot of sport going on next weekend and footy-starved fans may well just tune in for a look-see. And there are 10's of thousands of footy-starved fans. If it rates well, we'll get more AFLX. I'm going to watch it if I get a chance but only to see whether it offers anything.

But you also said this a couple of pages back You're entitled to your opinion by the way and I am not saying you are wrong either I just have a different opinion. We probably agree on what it is (AFLX) but I am not in the least bit concerned where as others (not necessarily you) are carrying on as if AFLX is an assault on their senses. I just don't inderstand the angst

The AFL are interested in making money ... that is what corporations do. And it has been that way for 2 decades now Wanting them to help out at grass-roots level or other worthy causes is fast becoming a pipe-dream.

Summed it all up very well H ... we all have choices so it is simply a mattet of exercising those choices. I spoke up yesterday against UFC because I believe it should be banned. Let it go underground but have huge penalties if caught doing so It is not ok for a defenceless unconscious female to have punches rained into her head thus causing untold brain damage. It is disgusting and more people should speak up about the disgusting practice. Now a mainstream sport? What have we become? By comparison, AFLX is utterly harmless.

What are you concerned about then if you reckon that AFLX has a 'fat chance' of succeeding? Probably best that you just ignore ... it's not a threat in your eyes so why bother with the angst? And I never said that all progress is 'good' ... I simply said that progress is going to happen and there is often nothing that can be done to stop progress. As an example, most test cricket fans (it is my favourite sport) should know that the sport is a 19th century sport and is under threat from itself. But the love & attachment is often too strong for such evaluations. I prefer to keep things real.

Progress happens ... and there is often nothing that can be done to stop progress. I played 50 seasons of sport including 30 cricket seasons - full on. A 3 hour version of cricket was inevitable. I am amazed that it wasn't thought of earlier. Thus, test cricket becomes less relevant. That is progress. Not my doing either ... these things happen despite all the protestations. That's life.

Ha ha! As parents we have to do these things ... I have done similar things. Numerous times. But as free thinking adults ... each to their own I suppose. As an example ... most people I know have very little interest in AFL. I really only watch or go to the Demon games. Different circles.

Approximately 99.8% of the world has little or no interest in Aussie rules footy ... yet in our eyes we mostly view the AFL as being ultra successful. The big bash audience is a different audience to the audience that watches test cricket AFLX is more likely to get a new audience if it gets a foothold.

Spectators not players. I was obviously never talking about the participants - as for the participants, whatever floats your boat and if you can make a good quid out of a pastime, good luck to you. As for the watching of video game players at large stadiums by adults - ???

A Day at the Races
The Lightning is always a tough race to find the standout winner Wadda but that suits my way of punting (exotics) ... the pools will be large and the dividends could be very healthy with the right combo & outcome. Osborne Bulls has got a real good chance - quality field though. But that's the case with nearly all the Group races.

A Day at the Races
Flemington Saturday (all races) Randwick Saturday (all races) The standout races being the Lightning Stakes (race 8 ) at Flemington & the Apollo Stakes (race 6) at Randwick. The Light Fingers Stakes (race 7) at Randwick has attracted a very good field and it is a similar story for the CS Hayes Stakes (race 7) at Flemington. Those are the 4 features that will attract the most interest.

And with the odds booster including Winx kicks it up to 100-1 from 92-1. 2 coffees becomes 200 coffees (Alex Watson territory)

A Day at the Races
Nice work Wadda ... I'll get on later. 20 units of the 40 units expected return from a Winx win could be invested in advance on a F4 in the race - it's like a free bet really. The initial 20 units outlay you can get back and keep. Remembering that in this race - 2018 Winx Stakes the F4 paid $2807 with Invictus Prince running 2nd. The best outsider that could run 2nd in the Apollo Stakes is probably Tom although 'Egg Tart' can run a sharp 1400m if the horse can find its best form. As is always the case with the Winx races, it's just a matter of snagging a trifecta (of sorts) with the remaining runners in order to snag the F4. And the race being a WFA affair means it's best to look for WFA form. Happy Clapper is therefore the standout WFA performer of the rest and again, it trialed very well recently.

A Day at the Races
Laddies are offering $2 for Winx winning again ... $20 maximum bet but that's money for old rope. Unless they run 'Tom' forward again there may not be a lot of speed in the race so Winx may not win by a big margin. But then again, she might win by 6+ lengths. Happy Clapper trialed really well recently and Unforgotten is a top-rater. I reckon that's the top 4 with Winx on top of course. Tom ran a very quick 01:21.17 over 1400m in winning it's last start so Waller might have figured out how to get the best out of the horse. Winx wins but if one can figure out 2nd, 3rd & 4th (in order?) then there's a half decent return to be had if taking a F4 combo multiple times.

A Day at the Races
Best Bet Randwick Race 4 No.2 Don't Give a Damn $3.80 An old favourite ... our very first best bet (it won) It's first up form is 3 from 3 and McEvoy is on board. Drawn perfectly too. Looks well placed.

You're the resident comedian so you should be Groucho, I'm a bit of a motor mouth so I can't be harpo so Deeza plays the harp. I guess that makes me Chico "Get your tootsie frootsie icecream"

AFLX Revamped
There is stuff that we like and there's stuff that we dislike ... it would be a dull old world if we all liked the same stuff. Music, TV, Movies, Politics, Religion and various other interests divides opinion as a matter of course. I'm not sure that AFLX will gain an audience but there's a few things that I do know - there are any number of footy fans who love their footy no matter how it is served up. And there are any number of footy fans who will never like AFLX but equally, there will almost certainly be a percentage that will like AFLX - probably mostly juniors but the juniors need parents or a guardian to take them to the event. So the adults will roll up by default. Works the same in the Big Bash. The VFL/AFL has always increased their overall interest through junior membership. And unlike other sports, the AFL make it very inexpensive for juniors. Other sports should follow suit but not many do. It's a great strategy and with AFLX, they may have found another way to increase the overall interest. Ultimately, they want the new money when those juniors become adults. My first junior membership was ridiculously cheap and it got me into all the games ... so off I trekked to nearly every game. After a year or so I was totally hooked in. And I'll bet there are hundreds of thousands of similar stories to match my story.

Doesn't bother me dc ... I now know of a few that are going along to AFLX and they are taking their children so you never know. Same lot go to the Big bash and they tell me that it's like the Wiggles ... a new lot of mums and dads with young kids replace those who have moved on. Interesting evaluation. I'm already fairly sure that I almost certainly am never going to like AFLX mainly because its not the real thing. Same deal for cricket where test cricket is king to my eyes. But AFLX might gain an audience.

And that is precisely the point that I am trying to make with AFLX ... have you read the thread? It isn't arrogance on my part at all ... there are any number of things that can be extremely popular despite me not liking or caring for those things. So UFC, WWE, ODI's ESports, t20's are all popular ... I freely acknowledge that. But I'm allowed to comment on those pastimes - good or bad. And AFLX could end up being popular despite the protestations on this thread. Go back and read the whole thread and note my previous comments ... do that and you will see where you've got me pigeon-holed incorrectly.

I totally understand the popularity but UFC is barbaric mindless violence. Anyone who gets off on that stuff needs help. Quintessential gratuitious violence. As for ESports - get a life I say.
