This has been commented on and researched ad infinitum by probably every club in Australia. There's a reason it hasn't improved and it's got very little to do with practicing goal kicking (particularly set shot goal kicking) given the current time constraints players have to get better at this skill versus the time required to improve. If it was simply a matter of practice, Nathan Buckley would have turned Cloke into the greatest forward of all time. I'm not saying it'll never improve, but any improvement will likely be incremental and occur over a long period of time, assuming there is no massive breakthrough in technology. There are a complex cluster of inputs that all need to work synchronistically together to even achieve minor improvement. One of those is practicing under conditions that simulate high-pressure scenarios, the role of fatigue in preparing to kick for goal and take into account the unique characteristics of different venues and whether conditions. Bring all these together in a practice environment, given the current evolution of the game, is practically impossible.

I just do not understand the lack of love for Bwiaaaan. He's articulate, super knowledgeable about the game, respectful of others - especially women and umpires, has a fine footy intellect, can easily discern the ebb and flow of the game, is partial to the Deez, thoughtfully considers comments before he opens him mouth, played for two great and respected clubs and behaves with dignity and love at all times.

Good post GTB. Tempo was easily the best Dog I've seen (didn't see Whitten at his best). Footscray were pretty crap in the late 1970's when he was at his best, so there's not a lot of footage of him (those were the dayz when only two games were fully covered for TV). Those that saw his 15 against St.Kilda from CHF say it's one of the all time great performances. Most of them were kicked from beyond 50. He actually had 24 shots for goal that day. The only CHF to win a Brownlow. Even on half a leg at Melbourne he still managed to kick an average of three a game, including 51 in a team that finished ninth in a 12 team competition. He went on to have a very respectable career as an administrator (Swans) and businessperson. Easily one of the most under-rated VFL/AFL players of all time.
