  1. Agree with that in terms of the coaches and FD running through the list, reviewing and maybe playing the odd depth role players at Casey to see where they're at. At senior level i would hope (and expect) the boys give maximum effort and output for the entire season, right up to the final siren for 2024!
  2. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Midfield Clayton Oliver (Midfield 26yo 189cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Our three time AA, four time club best & fairest and Premiership mid has played all 12 matches in 2024. And he is on the improve! And substantially so. I'm prepared to say he is on the cusp of turning the corner. The bye will hopefully help significantly and you just never know from there. Is he back to his former best right now? Nope and in some matches (in between other better ones) he is still dropping away substantially. Is the substantial improvement off a low base in the first 6 rounds? Yes but there was the finger issue! Is there more work to do? Yes a power of work if he's to get close to his best again this season! But there is life fellow minions! And while there's life there's hope! To put his recovery into perspective, his player rating over the last six weeks is the equivalent to Big Maxy's season rating! Common Clazz... you can do it son. 3. Yes that's right DZ. Is it also correct to say that Tracc has upped his time forward this season significantly vs 2023? Then there's the depth factor. Not all is as dire as it may seem through the middle though DZ. I think the bye will freshen a few up. Particularly our veteran followers in Vines & Max. As well as Clarry & Tracc. I also have a bit of positive news to follow shortly. Stay tuned!
  4. A big yes from me. Does he have the tank though? He could also share the role with Vines but the majority of time Clarry is going in. Say 60% Clarry / 40% Vines. That's assuming this isn't already happening which i doubt. Also move mids who are being tagged or somewhat out of form in recent weeks, send them up forward and swap with a HF for the occasional CB. Then back to usual roles. Other teams are now doing this. Filth 👉🏼 McReary & Lapinski attended 18 CBs between them against the Doggies. Bombers: Stringer comes in for Perkins occasionaly then straight back to HF at the next CB. Hawks: Dylan Moore comes in for Newcombe for the odd CB then straight out again. Kozzy comes to mind. Can come in for a CB in place of Tracc, Vines or Clarry then straight back to HF at next CB. Decent summary and case Deeceive but a team should never put the cue in the rack unless it becomes mathematically impossible to make finals. Finals experience is invaluable and who knows how deep we might go.
  5. The club has all the metrics and no doubt in regular discussion Gawndy. The above may well hold true but as to whether Clarry managed to put in a pre-season like he has in prior years that saw him rise to the top, who knows? I guess only Clarry would truly know this. Can he build on to that base if it wasn't up to his usual? Without a mini pre-season and time out of the game for 4 to 6 weeks probably unlikely. I reckon what we are seeing in terms of a week up and a week down is probably about where he's at. And unfortunately that means other mids are sort of left trying to make up the gap. Some of them are not even proper mids as we don't have the depth to cover either. All in all i think it's a sum of all parts. The mid field was bound to be found out in terms of form and/or pure exhaustion through lack of depth and players off their game at times like Clarry and Vines. This could also partly be due to a culmination of four years or so of massive grind for our mids & followers. And possibly moving too far away from our DNA that got us to the top or thereabouts. And the 'found out' time no doubt arrived vs the Eagles and this last round. Does that mean we're in for an uptick this week and a solid win?
  6. This is where we need intel that we can't access though. We need to see our first possession winners from 2021, 2022, 2023 and this season. That will tell the tale imho as to the role Clarry played in extractions as well as clearances. My gut feel was that it (the extraction role) was a combo role between him & Viney (mostly). With occasional cameos from the likes of Maxy and Gus. Then another level down on rarish occasions maybe Sparrow and JJ. My gut feel is that for some reason Clarry started to move away from the first possession (extraction) focus to a slightly more outside clearance focused role towards the end of 23. That comtinued on this season. Leaving it mostly to Vines. Then Vines had to go to another level once Clarry injured his finger. Post surgery have we seen a slight uptick from Clarry to claw this back in some games.? But then others he has tended to revert back to a more outside clearance role (for him). In other words, has SG tipped the balance too far as Kingy is suggesting, and we've suffered accordingly. Leaving too much to Viney. If Clarry's no longer assisting Viney in this area (or his output is reduced sunstantially vs prior seasons), are we putting too much on the VC and effectively all our eggs into the one basket and paying the comsequences? I've said throughout this season that getting Clarry right is one of our most important 'musts'. The question is can we ....and can Clarry? And in time to make a difference? While he's improved in a few ganes post the surgery (vs prior), he's also very inconsistent and his better games are still not the tyoe of extraction / clearance style effort games we have come to know and value over many years. Still too much NQR stuff happening it seems.
  7. Amen to that. But regardless he still needs to bring the heat for four quarters every week vs picking and choosing when to go. Great player when he does go and presently our best naturaly gifted goal scoring forward. But a bad look for him, a bad example for other forwards with less experience that need to be shown the way (McAdam, Chin, JVR & Kozzy) and a real team deflator when he doesn't imho.
  8. On his last few games he certainly hasn't NS. And while he doesn't have the cred yet and shld be made to earn a call up, that hasn't stopped SG selecting plenty of players that also haven't shown much form at Casey. Including ones going back to Casey to find form (BB), those coming back from injury via Casey (Petty, Hunter & Bowsa) or other untried new recruits (McAdam). None of whom performed at Casey to a level high enough and long enough (more than one reasonable performance in a number of aspects of the game, not just a few goals here and there and/or a few disposals) that demanded a call up. Meanwhile you have Moniz racking them up and having a number of solid to VG games so far this season. Probably the best performing MFC listed player there, but overlooked every week. As i said a few weeks ago... selection integrity is one of the key elements in a pro AFL club if you want to maintain moral and high performance standards imv.

  10. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Midfield Jack Viney (Midfield 30yo 179cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Jack has played all 12 matches in 2024. His first six weeks were pretty much on par with his 2023 season. Similar to Sparrow, he has also dropped away in the last six weeks in a number of areas. In particular contested possessions, effective disposals, clearances, score involvements and turnovers. Having said that he has improved in others such as one percenters, rebounds, tackles (including inside 50) and intercepts. It is worth noting that Jack has been affected by some sort of shoulder issue on a few occasions. While i'm not saying this is the sole reason or THE reason for the decline, it should not be entirely ruled out, in terms of (possibly) having some sort of impact. One thing you know with Jack, he is certainly never going to hold back in terms of effort and commitment and his desire to turn any form issues around with hard work on the track etc. DZ i'm sure Sparrow is doing the same. He came into the season in pretty decent form. Who knows what has happened in the last six weeks. He may be carrying something or trying to shake it off also. Maybe he would have been rested / managed at some point if we had the luxury of more mid field depth? His Player Rating for the first six weeks (3.1) was up approx 10% on his 2023 Season Rating (2.8) The last six weeks however have not been kind to Sparrow. Losing his initial gain plus another 21% on top. If we compare his last six weeks rating of 2.1 to his 2023 rating (2.8), his rating for this block is down a massive 25%. The only positive metrics are uncontested, up 16% and meters gained by a marginal 5%. Rnd 2 vs the Doggies (63% TOG)) and Rnd 7 vs the Tigers (68% TOG) Effective disposals tracking well vs the first six weeks indicating he hasn't dropped away. At the same time efficiency is up 4.6%. Nice work! Tackles, intercepts and score involvements all on the up. The only real negative, turnovers up a little but off a reasonably low base to begin with, especially for a rookie. 13. Yes point well made BM
  14. Was going to ask this also. No player has had more impact from defensive actions this season and he was the 4th highest rated player against the Doggies. T-Mac no for mine. Not enough speed off the mark and has said he doesn't have the strength to push off the injured foot like he once had so back of shoulder spoiling is most likely a place he can no longer go. Unless of course its a stationary pack in our D50 where the bulk aren't flying for the pill. A completely diff scenario to playing on Moore. Possibly Turner if coach thinks he has the capability? Looked lost against Freo but a defensive task, back of shoulder, on a leaping opponent might be the tonic? Moore will at least take him to the ball quite a bit and he should learn from that and might even rebound at ground level out the back on occasions to punish the other way. I'd consider Moniz in this week for Chandler to play a defensive mid cooler role on Nick. I'd normally say Chandler but he hasn't played a defensive cooler role from memory and his knee seems to be a handicap of late. His worst has been horrific. Bowsa is plausible also. If so i'd still bring Moniz in for Chandler and have him cover off Bowsa's role.
  15. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Midfield (Wing) Ed Langdon (Wing 28yo 182cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Ed has played 11 out of 12 games so far, missing Rnd 10 to attend the marriage of his sister. Playing more time forward in the 2nd part of this block of games. Hence rebound 50s are down and inside 50s up. Score involvements & meters gained also up substantially as a result. Effort factors like one percenters & tackles down substantially in his last five games. One percenters not high to start with though and hasn't been a big part of Ed's game in the past. Intercepts off a little down 11%. Overall player rating is tracking in a similar vein to 2023 so far with some variations due to somewhat more time spent forward. #15 Ed Langdon Rnds 0 to 5 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 6.2 5.0 -18.9 6.8 5.6 -16.8 Uncontested Poss 12.8 16.0 24.7 14.0 14.3 1.9 Effective Disposals* 14.0 15.4 10.0 15.2 14.6 -3.6 Disposal Effeciency % 77.3 73.3 -4.0 75.6 75.5 -0.1 Contested Marks* 0.2 0.0 -100.0 0.0 0.1 100.0 Marks inside 50* 0.5 1.2 140.0 0.5 0.8 80.0 One Percenters* 1.2 0.2 -82.9 1.0 0.7 -27.3 Clearances* 1.2 1.0 -14.3 1.8 1.1 -40.0 Rebound 50s* 2.8 2.2 -22.4 2.0 2.5 24.4 Inside 50s* 2.0 3.0 50.0 3.3 2.5 -26.0 Tackles* 3.2 1.4 -55.8 2.4 2.4 -1.9 Score Involvements* 3.3 5.6 68.0 3.9 4.4 11.6 Meters Gained 256.0 329.6 28.8 345.4 289.5 -16.2 Turnovers* 2.5 3.8 52.0 4.4 3.1 -29.9 Intercepts* 3.2 2.8 -11.6 4.2 3.0 -28.3 Tackles Inside 50* 0.2 0.2 20.0 0.3 0.2 -33.3 Time On Ground % 92.3 90.0 -2.3 94.8 91.3 -3.5 Goals* 0.3 0.2 -40.0 0.2 0.3 20.0 Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 3.1 3.0 -3.1 3.1 3.1 1.3 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com
  16. That last line should read... "enough to make finals AND have an impact". I still think we're a decent chance of making it. As to what happens if we get there... well.
  17. Is there a chance most of the boys were setting themselves (prematurely in a mental sense) for KB as a statement game to revenge Gus and forgot they had a pretty decent opponent to play before that in Freo? If that is the case i am expecting a 10 goal smashing this week.
  18. His goal kicking amd ability to win some 1 v 1 comtests is great... when he chooses to go. I don't think he brings the white line fever enough. Then there's what happens when we lose possession at ground level and the pressure / tackling / contested side is needed. Goes missing here far too often. Obviously his game looks better when he does bring it. You can't pick and choose nor fall back on your goal kicking skills and craft alone. He needs to bring the rest more often and effectively. Not our biggest problem at the moment but lots of improvent possible IF he wants it badly enough. He's not alone. The whole team, but in particular the forward line, needs a rocket and needs fixing. I'm still not convinced Stafford is the man to bring that but SG is stubborn. I'm not sure he's even considered this aspect. If not he might need a tap on his shoulder to take a moment.
  19. From Chapion Data... 👉🏼 No.1 Contested Team 2021, 2022 & 2023 Now ranked 12th 👉🏼 No 1 Territory Team 2021, 2022 No 2 in 2023 Now ranked 15th. First time in negative territory on these two metrics since 2015. That has to be alot to do with the pressure factor and ability to retain the ball inside 50. We are a mile off bringing any decent pressure here. That needs immediate attention via both personnel, positions as in who plays where and the split allocated between those shared positions / roles and lastly application / will / want & fitness? 👉🏼 6th worst ball movement 👉🏼 3rd lowest team at scoring from turnovers, only ahead of North & West Coast. 👉🏼 4 years near or at top of table defending turnover before this season. Now mid table. Whatever SG was trialling / trying it's time to throw the experiment in the bin and get back to the Melbourne way...and quickly IF we're to salvage something out of this season. Reset & review 'how / where to from here' if you want better post clearance loose ball gets, spread & ball movement and transition from the defensive mid zone. But only after the above is substantially rectified. Can it be done in 11 weeks? Enough to impact and make finals? Stranger things have happened but i doubt it.
  20. Presently the lowest rated player in the competition for season 2024 (Champion Data)* *Not having a go at HP. As i've said all season from the time he was brought in after 1 Casey game (zero impact), his comeback has been badly managed to say the least.
  21. I've seen McAdam kick them three quarter goal post height from 50 at training with ease and that was weeks ago when he was still coming out of hammy recovery. You have to ask WTH is going on down there as they appear to be prepping reasonably well (as a guess) then turning up and unable to produce in most first quarters then [censored] the bed allover the park in other matches.
  22. He's had 10 weeks to do that Sth... time is well and truly up plus if he plays anywhere near such a lowly level, even a slight bounce, he & we will probably be murdered (again) this week. Terrible player / strategic management from SG & the FD on this one so far.
  23. Player Rating Review - Defenders Steven May (Key Defender 32yo 193cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 Stonewall May has played approx 10.5 matches so far. Missing roughly half the match against the Hawks in Rnd 2 with a rib / back injury and the following round vs Port Power. A great start to the Premiership champ. Rating indicates all is well, however looks can be deceiving and so can the rating. Digging a tad deeper there may be a concern here with May. Anything contested appears to have dropped away vs 2023 and particularly in the 2nd part of this first half season post the rib / back injury. Contested possessions down approx one quarter vs his first 4.5 matches. Contested marks in his last 6 matches down a massive 75% vs the first 4.5 69% if you compare it to last season's average One percenters down 20% vs 2023 average Tackles down a hefty 68% vs 2023 Rebound 50s off 23% vs 2023 Intercepts also down 11% on 2023 His turnovers average has improved substantially on 2023 (down 46%). Even further if you consider his last 6 matches vs 2023 (52%). Is this at the cost of playing a short game or not having confidence to pull the trigger on medium passes though? Could he be restricted in some way that is not allowing him to kick through the ball and/or attack the contest / marking / intercepts / tackles? Maysie is a tough hombre. Is he cracking hardy and maybe masking an ongoing issue post the Rib / Back injury? Numbers would indicate this may well be the case. If so the bye might not come soon enough for the champ. Let's hope there's nothing in this or nothing too serious. #1 S May Rnds 0 to 5 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 4.7 3.5 -25.8 4.5 4.0 -11.2 Uncontested Poss 11.0 10.8 -1.6 8.4 10.9 29.4 Effective Disposals* 15.5 17.0 9.6 14.2 16.4 15.3 Disposal Effeciency % 88.7 84.7 -4.1 82.4 86.4 4.0 Contested Marks* 2.0 0.5 -75.3 1.2 1.1 -7.3 Marks inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - One Percenters* 6.7 5.2 -23.4 6.5 5.8 -10.5 Clearances* 0.0 0.2 - 0.1 0.1 - Rebound 50s* 5.8 4.8 -17.3 6.2 5.3 -15.6 Inside 50s* 0.9 0.5 -44.4 1.3 0.7 -49.8 Tackles* 1.6 0.5 -68.2 1.6 1.0 -40.9 Score Involvements* 2.7 3.2 17.4 2.0 3.0 44.9 Meters Gained 379.6 378.3 -0.3 407.3 378.9 -7.0 Turnovers* 2.9 2.2 -25.8 4.6 2.5 -46.1 Intercepts* 5.8 6.0 2.7 6.7 5.9 -11.6 Tackles Inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - Time On Ground % 93.3 93.7 0.4 97.1 93.5 -3.7 Goals* 0.0 0.2 - 0.0 0.1 - Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.0 0.0 - *DD's Player Rating 3.7 3.8 2.2 3.2 3.8 17.4 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com
  24. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders Tom McDonald (Key Defender 31yo 195cm) Rnd 1 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 T-Mac has played 11 out of 12 games so far in 2024, only missing round 0. And of course has changed roles from KF to defence. Therefore a number of forward related metrics from 2023 are less relevant such as score involvements, tackles inside 50 & goals. The increase in his Player Rating from 2023 to 2024 is also a little flattering given defenders are usually clocking up a number of cheap stats at times. Nonetheless, a substantial improvement on his 2023 season. Started the season off very well. High accuracy with kicks and low turnovers. In the last 6 rounds however that appears to have dropped away somewhat with turnovers up approx 87% but coming off a low base. I wonder if that's a change in strategy at all with him being asked to take more risks going with slightly longer options and/or 45 attempts? Or could be just a drop off in form a little on the skills side? Champion would have that data of course. Macca also seems to be working on his contested side with a 36% jump here in his last 6 rounds. Bringing him back to his 2023 average. That seems a little too cute not to have been a target as part of his role in the last 6 rounds. Tackle averages are off dropping 30%. Not alarming by any means but 6 weeks of data is pretty robust indicating there is a trend. Would be interesting to put together a table of how players are trending with pressure. Although you would need to compare their averages with AFL average pressure points against similar role playing positions to have a serious idea of how they're traveling. Metrics which will probably never see the light of day (publicly). Note: Lever's table shows Rnds 7 to 10. That should read 7 to 9 as i did not include his paltry 7% game time in round 10 in his averages. #25 T McDonald Rnds 1 to 5 Rnds 7 to 12 % Change 2023 2024 % Change Contested Poss 3.8 5.2 36.0 5.2 4.5 -12.0 Uncontested Poss 8.2 8.3 1.6 6.2 8.3 34.2 Effective Disposals* 10.4 10.8 4.2 7.8 10.6 35.8 Disposal Effeciency % 87.1 79.1 -8.1 77.9 82.7 4.9 Contested Marks* 1.0 1.2 16.7 1.0 1.1 9.1 Marks inside 50* 0.0 0.2 - 1.2 0.1 -92.2 One Percenters* 5.8 6.2 6.3 2.0 6.0 200.0 Clearances* 0.0 0.2 - 0.5 0.1 -81.8 Rebound 50s* 4.0 4.0 0.0 0.2 4.0 2300.0 Inside 50s* 1.2 0.7 -44.4 1.7 0.9 -45.5 Tackles* 2.4 1.7 -30.6 1.8 2.0 9.1 Score Involvements* 2.6 2.7 2.6 4.0 2.6 -34.1 Meters Gained 194.2 244.2 25.7 167.0 221.5 32.6 Turnovers* 1.6 3.0 87.5 2.2 2.4 9.1 Intercepts* 5.4 7.0 29.6 1.3 6.3 370.5 Tackles Inside 50* 0.0 0.0 - 0.7 0.0 -100.0 Time On Ground % 98.8 96.2 -2.6 77.0 97.4 20.4 Goals* 0.0 0.3 - 1.3 0.2 -86.4 Hit Outs to Adv* 0.0 0.0 - 0.3 0.0 -100.0 *DD's Player Rating 3.0 3.0 -1.4 2.1 3.0 45.2 Stats courtesy of footwire.com & wheeloratings.com
  25. Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders Jake Lever (Key Defender 29yo 194cm) Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 9 + H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024 The three rounds post the bye is only a small sample size but whatever Rick did over the bye round... make all players do that in the upcoming bye! What a pity we lost him against the Eagles and beyond. Started the year as he left off in 2023 as well. Great stuff from our champion intercept defender.
