MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 8
Demon Dynasty replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Our stocks are certainly at a very low ebb mongrel. To have any chance of pulling off a miracle win I would prefer we just go small and fast up forward (as others have already suggested) and slam the ball in with a record number of stab passes and low raking kicks to the hot spot, see the ball spill off hands, faces, knoggins, chests etc with maybe an occasional mark. Feed off the crumbs front and square with at least one player getting there at all times and just kick madly in the general direction of the two sticks and hope for the best. Set shots excluded of course. Roll the dice with going short and fast as above and hope that Watts/Tracc can clunk a few in amongst the mayhem leading out to either flank. We usually get as many inside 50 entries as our opponents, sometimes more. But we can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear from wet players like the Weid overnight. He is a work in progress over at least the next two pre-seasons before we might see a decent AFL level key forward emerging and impacting over 4 quarters. I truly hope he surprises me and does something special. But height is only valuable if you can at the very least bring the ball to ground by hitting the contest for most of the match and/or take some valuable pack marks, even in the dying moments of some quarters and also stick tackles in the ground ball mayhem in front of goals. I doubt the Weid has the tank and strength to bring that for more than a half at this point. Good luck to him anyway and let's hope he grasps his surprise selection with both hands for his and our sake on Sunday. -

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 8
Demon Dynasty replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
These two are now on the emergency list mongrel and I have it on good authority one of them is likely to replace 'Weid' in the starting 22..... -
No I'm not either Ox... Especially after the excuse filled response from Goody. Hope he isn't pushing that rubbish inside the four walls

I don't mind some blow back to be honest. That performance last week, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST HALF, was an utter disgrace from the whole club. How can you not have a team mentally up and about to win a very winnable game that you are expected to and should win that would have put us in a pretty solid position and looking at finals?? Not once, but over and over and over across so many seasons. My angst is that he only directed fire at Goody alone and missed a big opportunity to target the whole club. Don't agree with the membership aspect But.... The question the entire club, including Goody, needs to answer but wasn't asked in that letter is the most important question in the club's mostly horrid record since 64 going forward. Which is..... What are we doing differently this week, to the past 52 years that will see us rectify the mental fragility of this team on the field? That is, whenever we are faced with the expectation of winning and going into a match as strong favourites we generally lose!!?? You could eliminate all the hanger on players you want and have a very very special starting 22. Without the correct frame of mind, competitive edge and killer instinct to find a way to win.....we won't shake this tag nor will we start winning matches we should be winning, like last week, often enough to ever threaten for a premiership. And it won't matter who the coach is or which era of players take the field. Ignore last week's match at your peril guys for unless what happened there is sorted we will forever be irrelevant to the competition. Last week needs to become our line in the sand. Sort it MFC.

I agree with Oliver forward. His insane over use of hand ball has infected the entire mid field I reckon with others also doing similar apparently thinking this is a good way to move the ball. Forward with some time in the middle to remind him that the goals are ahead of him and you need to drive the ball forward quickly (preferrably at least on a one to one kick/handball ratio minimum) if you have the space, in order to give our forwards a one v one chance more often or actually KICK to find a free target or a shot at goal if you are already inside 50. It is football and much of the time you are going to need to kick the damn thing in preference to handball if you are to succeed. Sometimes hand ball is necessary for sure but not at a 0.33 ratio (or thereabouts) most matches. Goody HAS to make sure that the rediculous and silly over use of hand ball we saw last week never occurs again under his tenure. That's his first major challenge as coach of the MFC, followed very closely by rectifying by whatever means possible, our inherently horrible starts and lack of G&T for long periods within a game to ensure we are in a match big time from start to finish, regardless of what's happening on the scoreboard. He needs to get each player to play their best, most aggressive footy (in line with his game plan) they can from minute one to 100! No turning or drifting off or assuming "someone else" will do it or accepting anything less than 100% effort for an entire match. If this means going man on man for short stints, FCS just do it. Make everyone responsible and don't allow them the easy "he didn't play his part in the zone the way he was trained" excuse. Man on man for short stints whenever the opp gets a run on will sort out the men from the boys who aren't willing to do the hard stuff running both ways. Hogan to CHF in a traditional CHF role. This will see him drifting in and out of the middle a little anyway but also ensures he gets more involved when a pressured kick from the middle drops short. Sits too deep out the back far too often for my liking. Watts to FF obviously pushing up high with the press as required and occasional but very limited chop out for Pedders in the ruck. If the ball gets out the back and you have Watts and Jeffy as the two lone rangers I can't see us stuffing too many opportunities up and it will ensure the opposition keep at least 2 less players honest and away from the wall they're trying to set up with the press and a few less numbers at the drop. The Ins and outs, other than Stretch/Kent for JKH/Bugg, I really don't think there's much difference with bringing others in and out. We play our matches mostly above the shoulders at the MFC now. There's enough talent to win. We simply have to get our heads right in order to start doing so regularly. This week there are no expectations that we will win so I suspect we will see a "good", but not great, effort that might see us reduce the losing margin to somewhere between 30 to 50 points. Again it is up to Goody to thrash this lethargic BS attitude out of the playing group (at least those that are displaying it) by whatever means possible. When we finally start winning the matches we are expected to win then we will have (and most likely Goody would have) exorcised our mental demons and we will be on the the way to something special as a team/club. Until then the jury will continue to assume, and rightly so, that we are quite a talented up and coming bunch with inherent mental flaws, with those flaws ensuring we will not be considered as a serious AFL outfit by our opposition or the footy fraternity and most likely we will miss finals as a result. Goody has a big job ahead.

? You and me both sir....oh and my longer suffering bro also. Imagine the fees earned doing the rounds of long suffering demon supporters ...not to mention the playing list!

OD you know a good hypnotist by any chance?

Yep makes sense Maldon. But....we simply have to stop gifting games to any player who isn't performing or hasn't shown a level at Casey over at least a few weeks that warrants selection. Howe would have been handy. He is a superb mark and an area in which we were generally killed around the ground last week. Would be handy this week as well. Would have kept him over Garlo and O-Mac any day of the week.
-
Maldon we are already on track for a jolly good flogging. I would prefer you don't also add more salt to the wounds pre match and pull our pants down prior to the first bounce in full ready position. You may wish to allow yourself the courtesy of another 24 hours break before reviewing that line of deduction pls. I'm sure your clarity will improve even further if you do and you will finally see a bit of light....and hopefully it's not a nasty MFC train!

I had the honour of meeting both Lou and the larger than life E.J. Whitten at the old McEwen's hardware store (the last one became a Bunnings apparently!) in the Bourke Street store circa 1976 - 78 as a young fella. Teddy was a huge framed bloke (for me anyway) and had a huge booming voice in person. The city was like my back yard play ground back then and I used to take the short cut between Bourke street and little Bourke on occasions through McEwens. On this particular occasion I walked in on either a store self promotion or maybe an VFL ( Chanel 7 3AW/3KZ sponsored?) footy fan prize giveaway competition with mini put put as the challenge. Not dissimilar to that we are seeing on the a Footy show now in an attempt to fund raise for struggling local clubs at the moment with Sam the only one doing the putting. I was lucky enough to have a go. Pretty sure I just missed on my attempt but the memory of these two huge personalities and legends and the opportunity to meet them in the one event was very special as a young bloke. His co hosting of WWOS and League Teams was always a highlight and not to be missed on Sunday's and Thursday evenings respectively. Bobby, Jack and Lou what legends and was mostly all on the run and ad libbed. Thanks for the memories, all the great gags and laughs . R.I.P. Louie "the Lip" Richards ✌?️

Questionable effort OR overcooked handballing
Demon Dynasty replied to spirit of norm smith's topic in Melbourne Demons
This is nothing new. As highlighted in many posts now over the last few weeks, when we over use the footy by hand we lose when we don't we win. The Geelong match the only exception with our horrid kicking at goal costing us this match and an aboration. But there is also a mindset issue with this club. Aside from going hand ball crazy yesterday and doing a complete reversal on the previous week vs the Bombers, whenever we are a strong favourite to win we generally don't turn up to play at the start of the match. By the time we get our act together we are often 25 - 40 points down by half time then we make our predictable come back in the 3rd and seemingly run out of puff in the last losing a close/seemingly winnable match. Probably expending too much energy with the the nonsense over use of handball with all the extra tackles and stoppage work that comes with it doesn't help our young blokes later in the match. The match being well and truly lost in the first half. It's been happening at this club too often for a decade now. The FD needs to address the hand ball issue for sure, but it also needs to address big time, the mental fragility of this group and what the hell happens to them when under any expectation that they should win! No coach, no matter how clever, can skill/drill train this out of the playing group. We could have 5 coaches in the next 10 years and some super ones but none will ever solve it nor will they at the selection / draft table. It's a cultural thing that the club as a whole needs to fix and pronto!!! Get some hypnotists in or psychologists. Whatever is needed to address this horrible mind set. -
Agree with all of that. With regards to the highlighted... We have two problems here I believe. We have no genuine lead up forward who can take a good overhead and kick accurately from 40 to 50. Hogan is our only genuine key forward but sits too deep and doesn't like to lead very much if at all. The opp know this and just plonk an extra man in front of Hogan or a third man in from the side to take him out of contests. Lastly we have no mid who can consistently hit a lead up target by foot even if we had a regular one (Watts the occasional exception). We effectively have a very good extraction mid field but one who can't hit a target up forward very often and we have no lead up targets to go for anyway. Even when we do the only thing we are capable of, long bombs inside 50, When the ball hits the deck there is usually no one to crumb and very little pressure placed on the opp coming out and they usually also have the extra man to run it out. Jeffy the obvious exception. This is why we win many of the inside 50 counts but lose on the scoreboard and the match, most of the time. The exception is occasionally when Watts plays a deep 50 role for a while and leads and we occasionally do manage to hit him. Which doesn't occur often enough in most matches. Until we fix the above we will continue to lose most matches. Too much up field effort (and over use of hand ball yes) for not enough reward and constant rebound goals from our opponents. Send this in to the club please. I don't know about 2 or 3 but I agree there's usually at least one and we play beautifully into the opponent's hands coming inside 50 almost the entire match and in most matches. Hence why we have lost in most matches but have mostly either won or close to break even on the inside 50 count. Quality clubs must lick their defensive chops at the prospect of playing against our forward line and how we butcher the ball deliverimg to it and have no dangerous lead target/s with the exception of Watts as an occasional cameo. Too easy to beat guys.

Like those changes also Dockett. But nothing will change if we don't change the way we play the game. Handball happy Titanic....

I don't think as a team (and coaching crew!!???) we know how to stop doing this or maybe we don't have the ability/personnel to do so at the moment Trigon. When we have played more direct and kicked substantially more often on the spread this year vs hand ball we have won those matches. The Geelong match the exception, where we had our worst collective accuracy in front of goal I think I've ever seen (other than muddy wet days at Moorabbin etc) and shld have won even though we didn't over use hand ball. As soon as I saw so many players flip flopping one too many ring around the rosey hand balls in the first quarter I new we had regressed ...yet AGAIN, after seemingly having learned our lesson the week before. Alas we never learn. One part of this prob is having too many players at the drop of the ball also and not enough faith in the player who is going in at the time to win his contest. Seems to be one or two too many who are drawn to the coal face like a dog sniffing another dog's behind. Over and over again, every other bloody match and we just never seem to learn or rectify. Allows the opponent to sweat on our dumb turnovers and feed off to a loose extra man on the outside And Clarry is a huge offender here. Far too often he handballs back into congestion or backwards with 2 or 3 foot hand balls when if he ran/balked a little or looked up initially there was someone or an area to hand ball (or even better kick it) to forward of congestion. Half his hand balls (or thereabouts) are good or sublime and the other half sells the team or a team mate back in to trouble. We are the 'Hand Ball Happy' ball murderers and it may have just helped to kill off any chance we had of playing finals.
-
That's because he chose to drill one of his worm burning deadly left foot passes over someone's head who had an opponent velcroed to his jumper instead of shooting coming into an open goal on the run. Jumbo if you have't learned already we always take the least simple and instinctive option so as to increase the likelihood of improving our turnover and clanger stats. And even when simple options present, we often prefer to just completely [censored] things up for fun! Especially when we are forward of center!
