  1. I love the way his hands just seem to emerge from the pack or tackle in slow motion and then extend out Inspector Gadget style and hit a target like a bullet. There's something about it that's different to the usual 'slick' hands... it's quick but more deliberate looking and somehow really easy to spot despite the speed. Great to watch.
  2. Another great win! So many contributors, with Daisy being just immense again. Her score involvements must be through the roof. Best of all, she brings other players along with her. The player that suddenly leaped out to me this week was Grierson, who took it up another notch with some strong marks and great presence around the ground. And Rocky for the win:
  3. All 'modernised' footy songs sound weird to me, even just the newer club's ones. The change of wording was necessary but they didn't have to change the style. Lucky us that there wasn't anything that needed changing about our song- the best song there is! It's kind of surprising that more of the teams don't have 'boys' etc. in their songs... Essendon, Sydney and North are the only others?
  4. I love that, like Lucifer's Hero above, I'm already thinking about what's best for Melbourne when choosing who to barrack for in neutral games. Great game yesterday. I get the feeling that our leadership group has a really good influence and control over the vibe and focus of the team. Aside from the obvious best contributors (Paxman, Pearce, O'Dea, Mifsud etc.) I really like the way Humphries goes about it. Also, if and when Mifsud really gets her goalkicking boots on, watch out!
  5. It is proportionate to the crime against other crimes. A player in the men's league does a similar hit, they miss 25%ish of their season and endure the wrath of their coach and teammates for making themselves unavailable. The punishment for the player is not being able to take the field in as many games as they would otherwise have available to them. There aren't any instances in the men's game where a player is penalised by missing an entire season (drug offences aside!). Anyway, I've ranted enough. A longer season will hopefully solve this in time.
  6. That's like saying human life expectancy is irrelevant to the punishments given for crimes. A jail sentence is the amount of time the criminal will spend behind bars in relation to the average human lifespan. In footy, there isn't some inherent length of time that makes a penalty just. It's in proportion to a season, or a career. I'm not saying that it wasn't a dog act or that this kind of play should be encouraged. But I think the penalty given is enough to deter others. It's not like players in the men's game are wiped out for the length of time the player on the receiving end is injured. That's way too arbitrary. And Meg's out for the hamstring as well anyway. The implication that the MRP are somehow going lightly on the women's competition is one that shouldn't be perpetuated.
  7. This is a good point and one I can't really see a solution to, especially since fines are off the table. You can't really suspend someone for half a game. The half game could be applied cumulatively for repeat offenses although that kind of happens already with carry over points... Oh wait, there is one solution, make the season longer! Then it'll be apples and apples with the men's penalties, which as we all know are shining examples of reason, fairness and consistency!
  8. I agree. As you say, 2 weeks (down from 3) is equivalent to 5-6 weeks in the men's game, which I think is a fair penalty for an act like this. In fact, when I saw the incident at the time, I made a quick calculation with this in mind and said "that deserves 3 weeks". As in, that's an appalling act, and deserves a harsh suspension. The penalty is meant to be punishment, but also a deterrent, and if players aren't deterred by the possibility of missing out on 25% of a season they've waited a lifetime for, I don't think anything would. I think the strong reaction to it is partly because in our minds 2 weeks is a paltry penalty in the men's game. But that's not the case here. Good luck to Downie with her recovery and look forward to seeing her out there next year.
  9. Would love to know what was said at half time (actually said, not just what they told the media). Completely shifted the mindset and approach. Best comeback so far in the league- sets a good standard for us in the future. Go Dees!
  10. I think the general vibe is 'women' when referring to the women's league, 'girls' or 'women' when referring to the players in plural, and 'girl' or 'woman' when referring to individual players, or a rule like holding the man/woman. As Ethan points out, 'boys' is thrown around in the AFL, as is 'men'.
  11. I'm happy to be patient and watch the league evolve. Rome wasn't built in a day and all that. Although sadly I think a lot of people will measure the standard against the men's league and dismiss it prematurely. Which is ridiculous, not because the women have any less talent or potential, but because the men's league has had 100+ years of development, and a wider talent pool due to societal expectations around sport... Just wait til the 5 year old girls of today reach the big time. Anyway, getting excited now and can't wait to cheer the Dees on!
  12. Maybe we'll see her running round for the Dees one day!
  13. Yeah, you can't blame her for being attached to a number she's had so much success in.
  14. 2016 Brownlow count, Round 19. Gawn is 11 votes behind the leader and gets the 3 votes against Gold Coast. (With some lip-reading) he can be seen confidently telling his teammates, "This is it, I'm coming!" What a legend.
  15. So pumped for this! I hope that those who aren't interested in watching the women's game can keep quiet about it, in much the same way that I don't enjoy golf as a spectator sport and yet strangely have never felt the need to broadcast that among its fans. Inevitably people will treat it as a novelty, but we should try to remember how much this means for women who love our game. Also I think the footy community at large would benefit from entering this new competition with a mindset that recognises 'Doesn't look like men's Aussie Rules' does not equal 'Not as good as men's Aussie Rules'. The game style won't look the same initially or perhaps ever, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that- the skill, guts, teamwork and talent will all be there and the rest will evolve with time (and who knows in what direction?), just like it has since we wrote the rules. The fact that I'm already on the defensive about this probably says something... Anyway, I can't wait to cheer on our team and I'm confident we'll be a powerhouse as much as we'll be pioneers!
  16. Great guests! Looking forward to having a listen.
  17. Interesting. I can't see any of them missing so probably just miscounted?
