The players are paid enough. But to me, that is not the point. The institution/brand/adminstration of the game, the AFL, controls the vast percentage of money circulating through the game, and the profit derived from it. Any time a business or organisation prioritises time, energy and money for adminstration and maintenance over its core business (in this case the actual playing of football) then something has to be done to correct it. A player strike is not the answer here and just makes the players look like greedy fools. The AFL is putridly rich, yet local grounds across the country are in apalling condition, century old clubs are dying, and kids now look at a sporting smorgasbord of which footy is only one option. How about they put some more dollars to the communitg development of footy?

No one could stop him getting the ball, and like Robert Harvey was still going at 100% energy late in games. A natural footballer with ridiculous areobic capacity for running. I was a huge fan of the Crows premiership teams ( even though I hated 1998) they had grunt, pace, flair and efficiency everywhere. Perhaps the most noticeable thing was they were full of stars but played brilliantly as a team. I hope that is the flavour Goodwin produces as coach.

Centre Simon Goodwin Right (in order) - Max, Hogan, Watts Left (in order) - N Jones, Viney, Daisy.

Well we will have to disagree. Have a look at how the weak-bodied, tackling softy, mentally weak Jack Watts was under Neeld and is now after proper development. Yes, they are different footballers, but Grimes' deficiencies would have been much mitigated with good development and coaching.
-
Yes, including us poor Demonlanders.
-
Absolutely agree. Can you imagine how Grimes would turn out if we recruited him now? The saddest thing about being a Dees supporter over the past 40+ years is the amount of good footballers and good people we havd burnt.

SEN 2017 AFL PREVIEW: MELBOURNE’S BEST 22
Maldonboy38 replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I would prefer OMac, TMac and Frost as our 3 main talls but the SEN list does look strong. Also, there is a genuine battle betwen Stretch and VDB for that spot and JKH might give Garlett a challenge. -

In junior footy ages 11 -15, I was often asked to do 1-on-1 kicking training with kids having difficulties. We focused on 4 things: 1. Holding the ball. 2. Moving ball from hand release to kick. 3. Body movement through the line of the kick (often forgotten or neglected). The run up, follow through etc... 4. Differneces in set kick versus on the run. But one of the main things to understand is to gauge the sense of eye-hand coordination in different kids. James Hird let the ball go from very high with both hands but his kicking was very, very good. Buddy Franklin's line through the ball is horrible. But the eye hand coordination was so good they could coordinate their basic flaws into an effective kicking action. As long as they drop the ball in its almost stationary drop-punt position, hits the foot at that angle without deviation, and they kick through the line, it will work. Hogan's action aften results in the ball making contact with the foot when the seams of the footy are not parallel to the angle of his leg. Often, the seams are still moving across ways. Result - the classic shank. His bent arm in point of release comes from how he holds the ball and drops it far too close to his body. Best goal kicking action - try Barry Hall or Taylor Walker. Best kicking action on the run - Gary Ablett. He hunches over and almost places it on his foot. MFC's best - Jack Watts. His kicking action is a training manual. And for what it is worth, Dean Cox of WCE had an amazing kicking action for a tall man. At that height, there is a huge gap between ball drop and kick and yet he couod coordinate it really well. -

Loved the photos of Petracca tackling Garlett, with Max Rooke grinning in the background. If we can harness even 10% of Rooke's aggression and instill it into some of our players, out contested ball work will improve even further. -
1. Brayshaw 2. Hunt 3. Hogan

Heaps of fun reading through this, but but very tough to limit it to 10. Robbie Flower. Brett Lovett. David Schwartz. Gary Hardeman. Stephen Tingay. Alan Johnson Greg Wells Stan Alves Liam Jurrah Travis Johnstone ...apologies to Rod Grinter, Jeff Farmer and Allen Jakovich.

I enjoyed those 2 videos VERY much. A great start to 2017.

My first impulive response is STOP CHANGING RULES EVERY #%$&*ING SEASON. But after a quick double shot of Dalmore 18yo I calmed down. Glad to see the change. As a ruckman in my younger days, it was always a farily pure contest with some skil involved and requiring thought at each ball up or throw in. Now we get to see 1-on-1 ruck contests which will return to being a highlight of the game.

60+. He looks lean, committed and angry.

I reckon we won't recognise our forward line by round 11 next year. Tim Smith, Hannan and Johnstone look very able options to make our forward line very difficult for oppopsition teams to cover. Hogan, Watts and Weideman and the three certainties, but Weideman might not get a go until a few rounds in. Considering previous training reports have had him practicing repeat leading and the when/where stuff, surely they are grooming him to be a regular. It looks like Goodwin wants to play really quick moving footy so Weideman's lighter frame might be a good fit, when he develops a tank. After those three the variations are endless: Kent, Garlett, Vandenberg, Tim Smith, Hulett, Joel Smith, JKH, Trengove, Pederson, Hannan, Harmes, Johnstone etc...

This is the reason I rarely watch it. They focus on side issues, silliness and Sam's personality quirks. It is the Footy Personality Show and has very little to say or offer about the actual games played or the games coming.
-
Not a great Footy Show fan, but when I do watch it, I thought Rebecca Maddern and Brayshaw were ok together. But to replace him with Hutchison!?!? A surly, sefl-inflated grand stander who likes to take a contrary position on most subjects to make him look intelligent (which never works) and who does not let co-hosts finish their sentences because he has another pearl of wisdom to share or another contrary statement to make. The worst footy person on TV, and that is a huge statement considering some of the gits who get given air time. Nothing of substance holding the Footy Show together now. The bell is now tolling...

I agree with most. 12 - 14 wins and a finals berth is the minimum pass for 2017. And with so many clubs teetering on form and club health (Pies, Power, Tiges etc...) there is great scope for us to finish as high as 6th. Gawn is the key. One of the young ruckmen has to step up and show some form to give Gawn a break for at least 2 games throughout the year. If he gets injured it definitely diminishes our finals prospects and I expect other clubs to target his influence during games. Another important factor is the development in key young players. If 3 of Weideman, Brayshaw, OMac, Hogan, Salem and Petracca make a huge leap in thier development then the sky is the limit on what we can achieve.

Looks quick, angry and good tackler. Could be anything or nothing. A bit of a surprise considering we have Garlett, JKH and Kennedy on oir list. -

2016 Player Review - # 8 Heritier Lumumba
Maldonboy38 replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
There have been some grand lines on Demonland this year, but this is a gem! Almost sprayed my morning coffee into the air. -
McKernan has a great set of hands and is a wonderful mark, but that's it. His awareness, disposal, running, tap work are all only just VFL standard. I always felt he should have made it but he remained a good mark, and never developed the rest of his game. A big no from me.

Demonland Crystal Ball 2017: Your predictions for next season
Maldonboy38 replied to P-man's topic in Melbourne Demons
We finish 5th or 6th with 14 or 15 wins. On QB, we annihilate the Pies which sees Buckley sacked and a board challenge that ousts Eddie as president. Oliver, Hunt and either Weideman or Joel Smith have amazing seasons. We win at least one final. Watts wins Best & Fairest. -
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - MICHAEL HIBBERD
Maldonboy38 replied to KC from Casey's topic in Melbourne Demons
Agree totally with this. Wagner showed enough and another preseason should add more. The more I see of Joel Smith the more he comes across as a real smokey who could be something unique. Add to this that Weideman is effectively our first round draft pick this year as well, and our inward changes are Lewis, Hibberd, Wagner, Weideman Smith, and draft position 47. Very happy with this. Oops, forgot about Melksham who, although came to us via last year's trading, is in effective also an inward for this draft/trade period. -
I am/was a Dunny fan and am sad to see him go. I still reckon Daniher ruined him a bit by playing him everywhere but forward in his first couple of seasons. His natural talent got smothered and he never recovered until he had a stint as a backman. I am glad he may get another chance but the fact it is at the Pies makes me puke.
