NON-MFC: Round 10
Well one myth busted. The misconceptions about Darwin’s oppressive heat and high humidity on a 😎 dry season evening? Minimum temperature overnight was 23.9*C, humidity at commencement of game 64%. Demons will play in Perth Sunday 28*C under the hot afternoon Sun. Bring out the comfy chair.

Don’t speak too soon! The vagaries of the AFL FIXturing will ensure another match some time in the not too distant future.

Recent rule changes fail objectives
Is the holding the ball ‘rule’. Still in the rule book? The largesse allowed seems to favour some teams over others. Especially those with monograms, very dark colours or over the Pentridge wall strip. Interpretations include a gamut of possibilities. From 360* + rotations to a near 720* double swings. Free release of the ball without correct disposal if dislodged in the tackle, to the no prior opportunity guillotine you’re gone. Good tackles are not frequently rewarded, the default choice is the inevitable ball up. Although it seems free kicks are given freely for the best Hollywood performances from those caught in possession. Another bane of contention is the lack of consistent objective umpiring. The premium league in the land, has professional players with part-time paid ‘amateurs’ doing the adjudicating. A professional college of umpires is well overdue. Drop the $$$ spent on inferior Cyclops technology and re-establish the credibility of goal umpires too.

2024 Injury List
Body mass has disappeared from the public purview subject to the new hysteria about self image. Is Time now on the chopping block of societal sensitives as well? My mass seems to increase with time (sigh)... since mass increases with increased velocity then it stands to reason that you can lose weight by sitting on the couch watching AFL 360.

TRAINING: Monday 13th May 2024
Shane McAdam may get the call up too. Bracket the offensive, defensive performances at Casey in recent weeks. Plus a Hail Mary and sprinkle some of Jake B’s pixie dust about for good measure. addendum; just read WCW’s post. Straight from the horses mouth. May have to reign in expectations.

Umpiring (Demonland in meltdown)
AFL’s Lex Luthor with the double-handed Cripp-o-nite hold on Clarry. Interviewed after Thursday nights game, he agreed been pinged twice for on field transgressions was ‘unexpected’. But added Visy production of brown paper bags was now back to ‘normal.

CASEY: Rd 07 vs Carlton
Shane McAdam post mystery injury of the week. One response was a concussion another 'fortunately' illness which appears much closer to the mark. Will be watching with interest this afternoon. Forward posse needs a definite spark up its [censored] on a consistent basis. Not writing off Fullarton either can hold a mark.

My 3 word player analysis V Carlton
joeboy - hatchet out tonight jack billings - added some class Given the startled deer in the headlights first quarter and the persistence with dry weather tactics in the wet. The club will employ a Maasai dietitian, add blodplatter onto the luncheon menu and use hermatogen as a gameday snack. Tom McDonald can fire up the barbecue but the steaks will be strictly rare. Ben Brown will of course be excused. The Waverley Park irrigation technician will bought out of retirement to manage Casey Fields during future training sessions.

POSTGAME: Rd 09 vs Carlton
A brave but ultimately unrewarded comeback. Four umpires but little continuity in the adjudication. Example A First quarter Petty’s arms impacted by Weitering in the marking action. Play on. Chopping the arms is unfashionable. Example B Pittonet mere hint of high contact to the neck more of a tickle than a slap. Free kick in a goal kicking position. Two goals down one denied one as soft as candyfloss. Example C Last. quarter Carlton bloke caught with ball forward pocket perfect tackle play on results in a goal. Squibb went down like wounded bull throwing his head out milks free. In front of goal square contested ball up .Petracca thrown to the ground, four myopic blind mice are tonight’s umpiring panel. Example D Cripps whose Downlow was heist of the century, must have called on Club KC to deliver the last free kick of game. Plainly on national TV a Melbourne bloke’s guernsey was held by a Carlton bloke with two hands. Noddy just plods along with the blinkers on. Going to award the Stephen Silvagni award for fair play to Cripps and Co.

CASEY: Rd 06 vs Williamstown
Deever, you can learn something every day. Never realised Mel Brooks was a creative force behind Get Smart. Big fan of his movies, Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood Men in Tights etc. Yeah homework was not a priority afterschool. Bugs Bunny Show was an early favourite, recall seeing Get Smart on early evening TV before the re-runs though which might date me. Probably a good idea soft drink bottles sizes were much smaller and more of a treat back in the day. Rather than freely available and consumed in copious quantities. Tarax (of course) and Marchants with the inserted screw top stopper were locally available brands. A former neighbour who retired to Daylesford, was an early recycler of the family sized Marchants bottles. The mineral water residue gave the bottles a rusty appearance after continual use. Fanta first manufactured and marketed by Coca-Cola in pre-war Nazi Germany was a favourite tipple. Later oddly Schweppes bitter lemon, must have been the quinine. Paper rounds talk about exploited child labour. Just after the original Southland opened, a young mate cottoned on to the fact, keys given out with the local weekly rag as part of the prizes promotion, were mostly simple designs. The few that were more complex would open the treasure chests on display at the shopping centre. Apparently the ‘diamonds’ were sorted out from the rust pre-delivery by the paperboy cabal.

CASEY: Rd 06 vs Williamstown
Oliver Sestan; has shown a few glimpses, after a decent outing against Port a few weeks back. Including a very positive last quarter as a midfield-forward. A mighty barrel goal against the Tigers at Punt Rd. Went back into his shell on Sunday. Will Verrall; battled manfully against the experienced, ex GWS Giant 203cm ruckman Tom Downie. A statistically well rated outing quantitatively. Qualitatively? Koltyn Tholstrup; appears to have hit a flat spot after his debut. Perceptions about him have somewhat been clouded given the almost rampant hyperbole and unrealistic expectations around. Andy Moniz-Wakefield; determined young bloke by all accounts. Surely if he keeps knocking opportunities will come.

POSTGAME: Rd 08 vs Geelong
Appreciate the link/alerts about the Guardian/The Roar stories. Both thoughtful well written articles with intelligent analyses. Reminds me of football journalism of bygone years. Alf Brown and writers of his ilk. The Sporting Globe aka ‘the Pink Bible’ after the game on Saturday night, recapping the highs and lows. Greg Hobbs, Geoff Poulter and Ken Piesse. Monday’s Age Patrick Smith et al, The Sun Mike Sheahan et al and later the Australian. More immediately the radio 3LO 3AW 3KZ and 3UZ which annoyingly had the horse racing calls during the game. And if you were lucky the Demons got football replay on 7 luckier still as winners. ABC no advertising/self promotion back then and some decent callers. Tim Lane, Drew Morphett et al. Special comments from former players and coaches, especially liked David Parkin astute, articulate worth listening to. Now IMHO the ABC caters for disparate demographics and is rife with post-Babel agendas. That attempt to appease ‘moderne’ mores but ultimately diminishes the whole. Switched off years ago. Dumped Foxtel and Kayo. Content now to choose and pick even if it is on 24 hour delay.
