Agreed, at the same time in the vfl he can pay his opponent no respect and get away with it, at afl level especially in our defense he has not been playing the aggressive defender role, but more off lock down closer to goal and stick on his opponent, he needs to find the balance at afl level of watching his manand fetching the ball! I'm happy with his 6 or 7 disposal games if he continues to shut down opponents, the offensive side of his game wil come I think.

Garland forward [originally posted in April]
Mad_Melbourne replied to GRUN DEE's topic in Melbourne Demons
Why? Garland is a very important defender, he can either play small or tall, which is pivotal as his versatility means he is often able to stop any kind of forward! He is pivotal in defense and hardly loses a one on one, while we are at it though, let's try Mitch Clark at full back when he is fit! -
Does Robinson really play as a midfield tagger though, carrazzo usually gets the job doesn't he? And then this week they brought in Aaron joseph, and they use Dennis armfield also! But I do agree that Robinson is ahead of mckenzie but that's mainly due to his goal sense

Ultimate Footy - Norm Smith League
Mad_Melbourne replied to Old Man Rivers's topic in Melbourne Demons
Was so happy when I was checking my matchups and saw McCauley had been put in, otherwise I rely on Stanley's 8 hit outs haha Was watching the west coast v Richmond match hoping Marci didn't get 5 more hit outs in the last 7:35 left on the clock! Haha. The gf was freaked out when I was celebrating nicnat getting a hit out as I usually hate him! -

Although watts was a number one draft pick he still hasn't become a key target, yet him and Rhys Stanley are at very similar stages of their development and had very similar stats, basically the same stats 12 touches - 1 goal both of them! Hopefully watts can out develop and become a better player than Stanley but it will be interesting to see the comparison over the next few seasons.

Let's be honest the conditions were not really suited for talls, he didn't have a great game, but in the wet you wouldn't expect someone who is 195 to have a good game

Played a very good game, did the one thing that annoys me the most of anything, in the last quarter he spoiled grimes, dropped his knee in he back and punched it to the front of the pack where grimes' opponent at the time Goddard. Although Goddard didn't kick the goal as a defender punch it towards the boundary, or just take a look and call grimes in for the mark! But his fitness really showed in a game that really was suited for defenders

Morton did well, tried hard, ran hard, used the ball okay, few poor errors but was one of our best and definitely something to work with!

We are poor, 0-11 here we come! Il watch after the bye Edit: I hate being so negative, but without people who can use the ball efficiently we will struggle to move the ball well! Also Tom McDonald needs to play vfl, fumbled too much and disposal was SHITake mushrooms!

I agree, but the only way our pacy mids are going to get to the right place is through game time, they need to practice and watch the match replays and learn from their mistakes. To be honest Tom couch is a filler, i can't see him breaking onto our primary list, and he isn't really what the team needs to win matches so I wouldn't be playing him! He is good to have as back up. Although if bate is removed from the team then maybe couch has a spot, but I still see him behind moloney, jones, magner, mckenzie for that inside mid role

We're not playing that badly - hear me out
Mad_Melbourne replied to Striker475's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yes the i50 stats are bad and the total possession count is shocking aswell, but how I see we aren't playing too badly is through our scoring percentage when we go inside 50 and our prevention of scoring when it goes inside our 50, what we are lacking is the middle third of the ground, and that is mainly just crispness of possession, but that is no issue to me at the moment as we are playing a midfield with bate, jones, magner, moloney, mckenzie, who aren't known for good disposal! The better our structures are set up with these players then the easier it will be to slot 2-3 class midfielders in and that is where the difference is! It seems crazy but I think most of our forwards beat richmonds defenders and most of our defenders beat their counterparts, it was only the midfield we got smashed and through that I can see us playing not too poorly -
I don't want him, we don't need him, if we still had him he would be playing but we have players who will fill his role in the future. I would rather give game time to tynan and viney next year who play the similar role!

Agreed with op I came into this season with not much expectation, and seeing a team with bate in the midfield mademenottoworried about our performances, as it is the structures and game plan we are learning. We have had neeld coaching for 6 months so we are still grasping the basics and from what I see, the positioning of players has improved and we still look more structured for the most part, we run heavy numbers forward with the ball which is the modern style, but turn it over and are left vulnerable, which is where lots of the goals have been coming from. When we link well and get it into our 50 the conversion rate is amazing, so when we start to use the all better, we get one or two extra clean midfielders and our i50 counts increase we are going to bea force! Improvements need to be made on our tackling and k owing when it is whose turn to chase, but I personally can see the development and have faith in the new regiment! Of course Immediate results would be great, but let's get realistic! Lengthy post, but I'm up for a debate -
Team balance is the only thing keeping couch out of the team, if his foot speed and disposal was better he would be playing ahead of Aaron Davey. But he is a slow in and under midfielder, competing for spots with manger, jones and players of that ilk, that being said he might get his way into the team this week as the only player with real form under his belt, personally I would rather we play petterd, tynan or Nicholson. but if we are looking to play another inside midfielder he might get the chance, although i would still prefer Moloney(if fit) to slot in even after a few weeks off!

Changes for next week vs West Coast
Mad_Melbourne replied to titan_uranus's topic in Melbourne Demons
I have no idea who should be in or out considering there was about 17-18 players who deserve it, but what I want to see is some outside players playing around the ball. Blease as the sub because his fitness is not up to scratch! Bennell and Morton in, we need the foot skill! Bate out. What else I want to see, it's a bit of a stretch, bartram in the fwd pocket, applying pressure, we lack the small fwd who applies pressure and bartram could play this role well, the idea here is not for him to be a goal kicker but rather use his speed and fitness to chase and harass! The other thing is he can use his foot speed to get behind the zone and therefore hopefully steal a few easy goals. This frees up players like blease and Davey to play the outside midfield role, getting the hands from the contested possession that we win and hitting targets instead of players like bate, jones, moloney bombing it aimlessly -
I wouldn't mind seeing Bartram playing as a small forward, alla Denis armfield played like for Carlton. Sure his disposal is not great, but his fitness and his defensive pressure would be a real asset in our forward line which struggles to apply defensive pressure. This could mean we could put blease on the wing meaning weave some cleaner disposal coming into our forward line through blease who Is a genuine outside player, and then bennell into a back pocket, where again the class disposal and his run can come in handy, it would give us two outside options with cleaner disposal into our fwd 50. Justa thought

my biggest worry is our class over the ball, our midfield lines up pretty tough, but disposal wise it looks pretty suspect, its all well and good to win the hard ball, its another thing if we cant hit targets... hopefully the ball gats in the hands of bail, watts, davey and howe, because if they all have 20 odd touches they are more than likely to be good offensive touches. -

just wondering, with my trade pending, if i get mcauley in my team before friday, am i able to play him as my starting ruckman? -
The thing is he missed a compulsory meeting, it would most likely have been based around team set ups and preparation (I'm just guessing) so by missing this he does not deserve to play ahead of someone who may not be as likely to play round one, but still ticked all the right boxes and the nab cup match will help to develop anyway
