The Robbie Flower Education Thread
Bobby McKenzie replied to Bluey's Dad's topic in Melbourne Demons
I saw the great Robbie Flower ahead of most. I was a teacher at Cheltenham High and coach of the senior footy team. We played a game against Murrumbeena High and lost by 7 goals. We were destroyed by a very skinny kid wearing glasses who kicked about 8 goals against us playing at CHF. I congratulated him after the game and asked his name. "Robert Flower " he replied shyly. I said," I reckon you could play league(VFL/AFL) football one day". I certainly got this one right didn't I? What a brilliant player he was. When I shifted to live in Perth I was at an Interstate game WA v Vic at Subi and my friend, a West Australian, remarked to me, "Naturally, I want a WA win, but I really came along to see Robbie Flower play." I guess that sums up the brilliant Robbie Flower. -
Also some great photos in the Age of the boys at training. They look very keen and purposeful. I bet Caro didn't suggest these pictures.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - DEAN KENT
Bobby McKenzie replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Young Dean Kent hails from a small town called Clackline about 80kms east of Perth. Yes it is a small town BUT with a population of approx 330. Now Todd Viney visited Clackline and reported on the MFC website that it consisted of quote" 6 houses and a post office." Now that's 50 plus people per house which is rather overcrowded indeed. Poor Dean will be able to spread his wings in Melbourne. Or should i say spread his cloak and arms? Sorry folks it's the heat that's getting to me. On a serious note it does sound like young Kent is keen to repay the Demons for having faith in him. -
Tanking at an International Level?
Bobby McKenzie replied to Bobby McKenzie's topic in Melbourne Demons
Maybe 'long-suffering' just maybe. -
Now, I happened to see an Australian fieldsman deliberately concede a boundary to his South African opponent this afternoon. Surely, this is yet another form of 'tanking' and will have to be investigated. This evening, I heard a little rumour that the Australian Cricket Board of control has handed the enquiry over to the AFL and Mr Clothier who is an 'expert in this particular area. The player concerned is likely to receive a ten match ban and a personal fine of $20,000 .

Our top three picks all interstate boys. Can anyone foresee a problem of them wanting to go back home after two seasons. Homesickness can play a large role in a young player's development. I would have preferred Wines for this reason. On the bright side we have a Kent and we know what a Kent can do!

Underworld identity photographed with Demons
Bobby McKenzie replied to DeeGee's topic in Melbourne Demons
Moderators, please close this thread as it is completely pointless and irrelevant. Enough crap has been written on it. I am photographed shaking PM Gillard's hand. Does that make me a Labor voter? -

No, Bob McKenzie missed the 1954 GF V Footscray because of suspension. (He had a fist fight with North Melbourne's Percy Johnson in the preliminary final). He did NOT miss playing in the1948 GF draw V Essendon because of suspension. He was out injured.

Gee, Jack You are dominating us all in this quiz show. You even got my question about Ralph Lane right BUT Stingrays just beat you to it. What chance have we mere mortals got? Seriously, you have always been a mine of information. Well done. ( says he turning green with envy!)

I think we need your next clue red and blue forever.

CORRECT! Well done Stingrays. Ralph Lane played 72 games including being in the 1956 Premiership team. Lane was a winger but in the Mornington Peninsula competition he had to play at centre half back for Frankston to try and combat the champion Hastings centre half forward. He was also a top pro runner. Nearly as fast as Bluey Adams. Over and out for me.

Sorry mate, this is just a one off to try and stump WJ. As I said it's your quiz show and it is very enjoyable and gets people away from the doom and gloom stories featuring Caro and co.

I have no intention of taking over your very interesting quiz Deevoted BUT see if clever dick Jack can answer this one. 'I played country football against the great John Coleman before becoming a Demon'. Over to you Jack and anyone else including you Deevoted.

Thanks Deevoted and Stingray for the info. I am surprised! Stingray, fancy C Wilson at number ten. She was a back up ruckman, ( Sorry Colin). Also Stingray,do you know why Donnny Williams got an asterisk next to his name in the team listing?

Jack, I looked at the match scores of the two GF that Barassi lost 1954 and 1958. According to their stats Barass wore his usual number #31 as did all the other players. I went to both GF in question and cannot remember the numbers being switched. Please enlighten me here. I am assuming (maybe wrongly) that it was a Melbourne GF loss.

Well done Smithy! I didn't think it right for me to enter.

Ditto. Your comments make a lot of sense. Hope the AFL reads your article. Maybe get it published in the AGE? Letters to the editor?Well done Jack.
