I do not understand how, knowing what we now know, anyone can think that the club is better off with Jack there unless they're letting their emotions get in the way. The remarks from the head of the Football Department (Mahoney) that Jack was a negative influence on the younger players were about as damning as it gets.

Think it was as much to do with Howe (finally) accepting that if he wanted a career his place was across the half-back line, not as a forward taking speccies and kicking a bag. Which, incidentally, is what Collingwood traded him in for and where he started there.

The coach didn't say anything that everyone didn't already know - you think no-one noticed that Jack was left out of 2 pre-season matches because of his attitude? This idea that everyone out there, including other clubs, all think that Jack Watts is the greatest thing since sliced bread and if only Goody hadn't opened his mouth they still would ... it just beggars belief.

No-one's questioning Watts' capability and usefulness. What's being questioned is his attitude, application, and professionalism.

Where have his faults been listed? It's all fairly generic stuff about "getting the most out of himself" etc. As for the public humiliation part, well, if you don't want public humiliation, don't participate in a highly mediatised sport. Getting dropped to the seconds is nothing if not a public humiliation, as is getting delisted, not to mention the parading before the court of public opinion of every player who commits an off-field indiscretion. It comes with the job. In the grand scheme of things, saying "We need more from Jack" is pretty tame.

Have always been a Watts fan and defender. But it's clear that his nice guy/party boy side has become problematic as we try to build a premiership-contending club and culture. Nothing against him personally, don't even begrudge him not wanting to go the extra mile and really put in with his preparation etc. After all, he's got this far on being a supremely talented great bloke, I can understand him thinking "why bother?". And who could blame him? Not me in any case.
