  1. Some part of the development team and/or he could even be the assistant coach of the women's team. Goodwin steps up to head coach. Someone gets reassigned in to his job as the forwards coach. A spot opens up at the bottom of the ladder. I wouldn't mind another experienced assistant from a good team to join Goodwin's coaching panel for some fresh ideas, but at the lower level we could add another development coach. If his bodies still good he could play out at Casey for another year or two. Much like Shannon Byrnes and Crossy I think if you've got really good people you find room to keep them.
  2. What does Caleb Daniel have athletically over him? Why can't he develop more burst speed and power, it's not like he's slow, he's just not fast for a small forward. I know the game is getting faster every year but the changes aren't that massive and Matty Stokes is just finishing (should be finished) a career as a similar player. Is Ben Kennedy really much quicker than him? The clean and creative half forward is the role I see him in and his polish could challenge the guys like Kennedy, Kent and Harmes. Let's see if how he goes this year once back healthy. I'm just thinking right now I'd rather have him for one last year to find out than a late round or rookie pick.
  3. Might be hard to trade Garland on a 2 year deal. JKH has done a hammy. Hoping he can get back out there soon. There's still something to work with there I think. Played too well in his first year for it to be a fluke. Spencer is the other one I'd add. If he's often injured and not good otherwise then surely there's a mature ruck option in one of the state leagues or a delisted pick up. I'd even consider Zac Clarke from Freo as a free agent, as long as it's a short contract.
  4. Early days, but at this stage I'd say we'd offer him for trade again and then if there's no interest we'd consider a rookie spot depending on how the list is looking for experience. He's a great guy and hard worker, but there might be a chance he's had enough as well. Plenty of issues with his body, so I doubt he has an easy existence to play AFL. I wouldn't mind keeping him on as a coach post career. Read the game well as a young player, that he couldn't change with it doesn't necessarily mean he's not a good footy mind.
  5. Can't help but feel they had to edit out all the best bits. But I loved Bernie's leadership and positive direction. Setting up around the ground is so vital, you can see scores happening if one or two players are just a bit out. Tom Bugg next week please!
  6. Would take a super defender to stop that, kick was perfectly place, Salem was out of position and therefore he was cooked. If he doesn't try and take the front spot then Lloyd probably marks it. Had he kept his feet he could've got back and pressured the kick but once turned he was all but done. Now you could say he should've been in better position, but given the zone style set up he was probably exactly where the coaches wanted him to be. He could be fitter and stronger so he could outrun Lloyd back to the drop of the ball and out muscle him, but he isn't and he's only had 1 good preseason. Dunn, McDonald, Lumumba, Wagner all made similar defensive mistakes at times. Salem got forward to kick a goal and set up many others, his attacking handballs were particularly good.
  7. Salem was tight in the hip/hammy late in the game. The 6 day break and given he was in the rehab group as it was might see him miss. Vince would go to half back and Matt Jones to a wing I'd imagine. Just one to monitor if anyone gets to training.
  8. The combination of the two would be the best 2nd ruck/forward in the game! I think the forward lines working well as the speed Frost, Watts and Kent bring to hit out to space opens gaps for others. But I also think at Etihad we aren't going to get that space and we'll need more marks inside 50 and link up play to score. Watts plays well deep at the G in space, but I'd rather him up the ground at Etihad, which is where Frost has mostly been. The best structure for horses for courses might be Frost out for Petracca if they are confident Petracca can give us enough forward pressure. But if they stick with Frost I can understand it. Frost is another option to play on the wing when Riewoldt goes there. He could start in his defensive forward role then move up and do short stints on the wing against Riewoldt to stop him getting a mismatch.
  9. Beaten 2 out of 3 bottom 6 teams. Won 1 out of 2 likely top 6 teams. Haven't played anyone in the middle yet. Nor have we won interstate and so on. Huge game this week. Beat the Saints and we can make a case for being in the top 5 Victorian teams ahead of Saints, Tigers, Pies, Blues, Dons and behind North, Geel, Hawthorn and Dogs. Lose to the Saints and we won't have put a gap on the bottom Victorian sides yet, let alone worked out how we are going to win enough of our interstate trips.
  10. I thought he did a lot of good work getting the ball (and his touches reflect that) and competing in the air. Needs to switch to chase mode a little earlier but that's never been the strength of his game. The fast pace of the game creates some chances for him but also means he has to link up in strange positions as well. Sounds trivial, but he doesn't have a Jesse Hogan to kick too either! If he nails the 2 shots for goal and cleans up the 2 turnovers by foot then he would've had a great game. Otherwise I'd say he had a solid game playing to his strengths and learning more about where he needs to improve.
  11. He'll cop a fine for that. But Jack had a rolled ankle. Presuming Bugg knew that then he probably knew what he doing.
  12. Watching it again, it's cowardly, but it's a forearm not an elbow or punch. There's a pretty important distinction there. Only so much you can down clipping a guy with you arm even if it's using his head like a basketball. If it was a clean elbow or fist it would be far worse. Rance will almost surely miss the Dixon match up against Port. That'll do me.
  13. They have the option to go direct to the tribunal if the criteria does not match. "Impact" I'm led to believe includes: - The medical result - The potential for injury - The physical force Based on potential for injury and force I'd say it's going to be more than low. But I don't really care. Rance has been a ball player and a good player for a long time now. This is nastier than Vince's cheeky elbow, but as long as Watts is ok I'm not out for Rance's blood.
  14. Jayden Hunt went running over to Salem who Vickery (that tough strong 6'6 pile of ......) decided to get in to. Was great to see a 2nd gamer stick up for his school mate! Then Dunny and Viney I think were right in to it. And that was the 2nd or 3rd outbreak of that particular melee.
  15. Clever player with the way he just darts out of stoppages. Particularly when we were handballing around the back of them too often, which gave them a chance. Gawny was great tonight, but I thought Maric did a Jamar style job of getting his experienced body in the way and so making sure Max had to go to set spots most of the night. Hard to pick up live but I don't think we were as dominant in close as we could've been. Maric is experienced. Cotch for all the jokes can play. Martin dangerous. Miles a very hard worker. Grigg's played a lot of footy. Probably can't be too disappointed in that. So getting back to Edwards, I think we just have to make sure our young backline are on top of their set ups and position so we can't lose him at a stoppage. I really love Salem and Jetta getting dragged up to stoppages as I think they could be inside mids if they had to. Strong and clean in close. But Hunt and Wagner probably aren't used to that. And Lumumba we know is a potentially fantastic player in space but not great in tight spots.
  16. Jones - has earnt this Viney - non stop effort Jetta - goes when needed McDonald - zone squadron leader Lumumba - zone squadron deputy Bugg - likes it hot Dunn - longer 't'went better Salem - slices and dices Gawn - all round quality Vince - brings lovely balance Wagner - modern day defender Tyson - yin to Viney's-yang Watts - efficiency creates confidence Frost - unpredictable and intruiging Harmes - finding nice rhythm Kent - spread all day Brayshaw - not even concerned Hogan - best was subtle Pedersen - complemented team-mates well Hunt - holding his own Kennedy - hard and smart Garlett - a pleasing return
  17. It's the post match discussion thread. Not the cheersquad circle jerk. A great step forward. Fantastic effort as I said. Win or lost there's lessons from every game. Tomorrow in the review the message should be don't play with your food.
  18. Ingo was a rock solid marking CHB. Tom McDonald might be heading that way. Big Mac, as in Anthony McDonald. Really honest depth midfielder with a good mix of run, skill and commitment. Might be more Harmes like. Last week Wagner played a bit like Clint Bizzell. Not so much in the air this week but lots of class disposal for Wagner today. Hunt is fast and I don't think we've seen the best of his speed yet. Clean by hand. Much stronger defensively than I thought, good overhead as he's deceptively tall. Not sure I've got a comparison from the 90's/00's yet for him.
  19. Fantastic effort. Mediocre execution. We'll struggle to beat good teams playing as sloppy as we did tonight, but we'll be in the game with the effort. We just have to find the right balance between sharing the ball and overusing it. If we are out in space, don't go back in. If we are under pressure but running forward then kick to advantage instead of trying to find extra handballs. Our step backwards in the 3rd quarter was created by players trying to be more direct to make up for the first half where the overuse was prominent. The last quarter we found the balance again. Although we left a few goals out there/created a few hassles either trying to be too direct (Frost up and under kick that did Kent no favours), not pulling the trigger (the pass to Hogan that was off line and spoilt before the goal game from Tyson) or the opposite in trying to walk it in (Hogan smothered). Some other mental errors like lack of concentration (hello Tommy Mc 50) and getting sucked in to a 1/4 time fight that we can avoid.
  20. Reads thread title. Thinks, surely not. Reads OP. Well ok then. No. Forget whether it would be a good or bad deal. The number 1 thing Roos has tried to build is culture. Any form of encouraging your star forward to leave is against that. And the idea that we need another number 1 pick is good for a giggle. It's the last thing we need.
  21. Prehab needed. Hopefully after Petracca we've got all our boys doing the exercises he did post knee now whilst they are healthy. That said, the Dogs have had a heap of knee injuries to both senior and reserves players. I think they've got 4 out now and Libba just back. Harsh game footy. I feel like every game you play at any level is a chance to do a shoulder, knee or ankle and you're a lucky player at any level if you play a decent amount of games and don't do one of those injuries needing a long lay off.
  22. Brendon Bolton, Luke Beveridge, Ross Lyon and Kenny Hinkley are all good to listen to, but I don't believe a word that comes out of their mouth. Occasionally Rocket Eade is good to hear from. Bucks speaks super well. Chris Scott has a good sense of humour. Al Clarkson is really the only coach who I try to pay attention to, as he's the best coach in the league by the length of the Flemington straight, but even then he's very good at not answering the questions and telling people what they expect to hear. I'm not sure there's a coach of a losing side who's truthful and engaging and not just because they are either fighting with the media or telling jokes. Rightly or wrongly coaches can't say anything critical of the players, assistant coaches, other staff or even fans without copping it these days. And if they blame themselves then that's a problem as well. So all we get is not stop talk of structures and process.
  23. Will there be a draft? Surely you can't have women moving state for what will initially be a semi professional league. Victorian women split between the 4 clubs here, others stay in their home state teams. There might be a draft to split up the talent in Victoria but I think the Dogs and Dees should retain a fair chunk of the Victorian girls they've already had play for them. By the sound of that Caro article our biggest risk of losing Daisy is to the AFL, but I can't imagine that will happen until after she stops playing. The AFL love a conflict of interest but current players working in league admin would surely be a step too far. I love that we are on the front foot with a women's team. I just wish we had a ground set up to play women's footy and VFL at. I think that will be the biggest challenge for the club over the next decade. We need a proper home base if we are to capitalise on this investment. We also need the curtain raiser rules changed so that women's games are proper curtain raisers to the mens when possible.
  24. Bring on the old footy show curse. Bec Maddern will ask sensible questions. Brayshaw will probably link in the North game. Newman won't offer much. Anyway, always good to have the club get some publicity. Not sure why a TV or radio network hasn't signed up Max Gawn to a regular gig yet. Possibly the funniest bloke in footy and gives good opinions on the game as well.
  25. I think as a general rule for every week you miss being unable to run you have to add an extra week of training before you play. So if Vanders can't run next week that's 2 weeks without running, which means 2 weeks of training before he can play. If he misses 3 weeks off legs then it might take 3 weeks of training to get him back. The major delay will be if they bring him back too early and he then has to stop running again before restarting.
