Kozzy Pickett Re-Signs for 4 Years
Dr. Gonzo replied to Timothy Reddan-A'Blew's topic in Melbourne Demons
Hmm distinct lack of different font colours and sizes and random italics throughout the post 🤔 -
I agree history should be recognised. Pre-1897 VFA can and should be recognised as the premier competition in Victoria. But it was not the same competition so when you're talking about competition records they don't count for the VFL/AFL. It's the same reason we don't count SAFL/SAFA/SANFL, WAFL, TFL, WAFL etc records in VFL/AFL records. The SAFL or WAFL could make an argument they were the pre-eminent competitions in the country pre-1897, even post-1897 for a period of time. You can argue those state comp premierships/achievements are equivalent to the achievements of those in the VFL. But they were not in this competition which is why they cannot and should not be included in the official records. I feel we are both just as passionate on this, I have Colin Carter's book which I will read, I've read Geoff Blaineys book and many other books on the history of the game. I am all for more recognition of the history of Aussie Rules. But if we are talking about VFL/AFL records/premiership tallies those commence in 1897 because that is when the competition commenced and it is the same continuous competition that still runs today. The pre-1897 premierships should be celebrated by the club's as part of their achievements and honour board etc but they don't count towards VFL/AFL premierships because they were not won in the VFL/AFL competition.

Checked the fixture the other day and the first game I'll get to is ANZAC Eve! 3 of our first 5 interstate and have other things one when we play Dogs and Swans 😡
-
It was not the same league though Macca. 1897 was a new breakaway league called the VFL. The VFA still existed and continued as a separate entity as I'm sure you know. Another change that occurred in 1897 with the breakaway league was the inclusion of behinds in the total score tally. Initially only goals were counted, then behinds were counted but not included in the score. In 1897 behinds were added as one point with goals awarded six points to calculate the total score. For anyone interested in the history I recommend the podcast Kick to Kick, 2 (sometimes 3) Melbourne supporters and an Essendon supporter going through the history one year at a time (although they cover the pre 1897 stuff in one podcast from memory). They are all history teachers too from memory.

Just wait a few years and we can wipe the slate clean when Tassie enter. In fact let's just say the only flag that counts is the last one 🤔🤣

No, the AFL in 1990 (not 1991) was the same competition as the VFL in 1989. It was the same teams, same governance structure, same rules, same awards etc. The only difference was a name change, a rebranding. It's like saying the Melbourne Fuschias and the Melbourne Demons are two separate clubs.
-
No, because pre-1897 was a different competition. All those changes post 1897 were part of one continuous league, the VFL which changed its name to AFL in 1990. The governance of the league continued from 1989 to 1990, 1897 was a breakaway competition with a new structure and governance. Some of the "premierships" awarded pre-1897 were done so by vote of media and the "fixture" was far from official with some teams playing more games than others, some teams not playing against other teams and doubling up against others etc. It was far more informal than the structured competition which began in 1897. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VFA/VFL_premiers "From 1877 until 1887, the premiership was a title given to the best performing team, determined largely by press consensus. These premierships, as well as premierships between 1870 and 1876 decided in the same manner prior to the foundation of the VFA, were at the time an informal title, but have since been considered official.[1][2]"

He's been going on about this for ages, it's a ridiculous notion. Check out how some of those premierships were "won" pre-1897. It was a different comp, with different teams and different rules. Club's can celebrate their own achievements but as far as competition records are concerned they should and do commence in 1897 with the breakaway VFL.

I think they'll win one in 24 or 25, 23 probably a year too early especially with Walsh sidelined at the moment. Bloody annoying, I don't want them sitting at the top of the heap on 17.

Essendon, Hawks, Giants, Port and Fremantle 😉
-
I think that's optimistic and still short of the 80-90k they're likely to get against the Pies/Tigers/Blues/Bombers/Hawks should those sides be up and about

Between the Flags - a great new book on the MFC

Thanks for posting od. Just on this comment that "the players love Casey" - it's not necessarily the current players I'm worried about but how it might be a disadvantage in recruiting players from other clubs. If it's between us and Collingwood, Carlton, Footscray, Essendon even Saints, what is the more lucrative location? Obviously there may be other reasons players choose to come to us and creating a great environment is key but at the end of the day all other things being equal it will set us at a disadvantage.

It's not just the travel. if we play Geelong at the G we probably get 40k-50k - maybe 60k at a stretch. Collingwood and Richmond are almost guaranteed 80k and could push 90k.

"Murdoch tabloid" is even being kind, I just refer to it as the LNP/coal lobby Pravda with some Harvey Norman ads on every other page.
-
It's not just how many members it's how many people turn up to the games.

What will come first the reply email or the training ground? 🤣

Those numbers are for Victoria only right? Pretty sure WCE, Adel etc get every game on FTA in their home state.
-
This is absolutely outrageous and I am disappointed the club didn't push back on the AFL to demand a proper bye. I can't see any other club so far that has less than a 12 day break and some club's have a 15 day break. Geelong play Thurs June 15 so have a 7 day break leading into our game only 3 days less than us and we have a bye!!! Nevermind the fact we have to play in Geelong again, sick of playing there every single [censored] year

So when is the fixture actually going to be released? Before the new year?
