How far off were we from a perfect 2021?
If only there was some way to redeem ourselves…

POSTGAME: GRAND FINAL vs Western Bulldogs
I’d cut him some slack. He’s a young man letting his hair down. I hate the way footy fans expect players to act like they’re at a funeral after they lose a game. Just because we’re emotionally unbalanced and tie our complete mental well-being to our footy team, doesn’t mean the players should. And this was obviously some time afterwards, seeing as it is in a night club. Fair dinkum, who cares.

Q & A with Max Gawn
Bah, paywall. Still got giving this mob a cent of my money, even for premiership media/crack.

No more apologising
You should see someone about that chronic MFCSS mate. Seems like the medicine hasn’t worked! Screw being humble around other supporters who haven’t been humble around us. We all know that you can never know what might happen, but talk us up anyway. Who cares if you end up wrong. They’re no better or more worthy than us now. They never actually were, but now we’ve got the trophy to prove it.

No more apologising
My youngest son is 9 and really only started getting in to footy and getting behind the Dees this year. A bit like the players, like Trac, who say they can’t remember the dark times because they weren’t there, my son may never experience the shame of being a Melbourne supporter. I happened to be 9 years old, the same age he is now, in 1993 when the MFC got done by the hapless Swans for their only win in a truly terrible year for them. I went home in tears after the merciless ribbing I received. I can’t remember much about footy back then but I clearly remember that. Nobody will be laughing when my boy wears his Melbourne gear to footy colours day next year. I’m so proud.

Back to Back?
Yep. Funny how our whole lives it’s been: building, building, WHOOPS, building, building, WHOOPS, building building… up until 2018 on: building, WHOOPS, building, builOMG WE’RE HERE ALL OF A SUDDEN. I’ve honestly got no idea what my expectations are for the next few years, but it will be the first time we go in to a season KNOWING we’ve got the ingredients for success. Scary new territory, but I’m up for it.

Back to Back?
I could be persuaded to go around again, sure. Why not?

"Luke Jackson won't make it as a ruckman" Dwayne Russell 3/12/20
Why would I voluntarily subject myself to Derwayne’s voice?

Carlton to get on the 'selfless' bandwagon
I believe St Kilda have also overtaken us.

Carlton to get on the 'selfless' bandwagon
As opposed to the real name we all post under? By the way, is 11 your surname? Anyway, do go on...

We Kicked too many Goals
As a viewer, the idea that they ended up just chucking in a few ads for free makes me cranky. Shows who the broadcaster's priority is - but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Multi-Call: Melbourne's Third Quarter Blitz!
Nice job! Never thought I’d hear these words come out of my mouth but Brayshaw was my favourite. Bang bang bang!

Kate Roffey, the unsung hero of our success
One of the many things that went right this year that previously would have gone to custard and disrupted the season. The board quietly rearranged itself in the background, including a leadership shift. I’m grateful to them all, including Bartlett. It sounds like Roffey was just the leader Goodwin needed this year.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - TOM SPARROW
I preferred JJ when it was clear a choice between the two needed to be made, but the footy department showed why they’re the experts and I’m not. Completely looked the part in the finals. He’s a booming and accurate kick, and tough as nails. Played his best game for the year in the Grand Final.

Majak Dawn set to sign on for 2022.
Good insurance policy, and our list turnover is already pretty much sorted with 2 retirements, 4 delistings and 1 “we recommend looking elsewhere”. You’d have to think we’re unlikely to get as lucky with injuries to talls as we did this year, where other than Tommo, we hardly had one. Happy with this.

Jake Melksham
Even if he wasn't asked to, he probably would anyway. He's at the back end of his career and breaking in to the MFC side is only going to get harder for him from here. Melksham was outstanding in 2018 and instrumental to the competitiveness of the team that year. Happy memories for me. The fact that Essendon fans all seemed to hate him so much made watching him tear games apart all the sweeter. Hope he can eke out another two years elsewhere.

Farewell Aaron vandenBerg
I’m sad. His comeback in 2018 was immense. I remember his two flying shots on goal in his return match- the crowd rose and really wanted to go berserk for him, but unfortunately both missed. Smashed it in the finals and signed on for three years amidst a lot of speculation and good reasons to go, to be closer to the Canberra based family business he was running from Melbourne. Tough, courageous player. Pity we probably never saw the best of him. All the best Vanders. It’s the right call from the club. Hopefully he can find a home at a rebuilding club that needs an enforcer for a year or two.

Gary Ayres Player of the Finals
What a laughably dumb award.

Kozzie’s Shepherd
Yep, I was going to bring that up too. TMac and Cordy (I think) were locked hand on shoulder pushing each other. By the time the ball arrived, Tom had just about pushed him to the fence. Great display of strength.

Bontempelli hit and Daniel tackle
Daniel tackle should have been a free. It was dangerous and out of play. I completely reject the assertion that Gawn hammed it up. The logical inference is that he hit his head on the astroturf hard enough to take skin off on purpose. Okay then 👍 but like I said, just a missed free.

Is your life complete now?
I’m only 37, so I bloody hope not! A yawning void has been filled though, and scars are fading.

Knowing those two I’m surprised they didn’t manage to talk over the top of the cup!

POSTGAME: GRAND FINAL vs Western Bulldogs
For a guy who is normally so articulate, his first interview while on the lap was completely incoherent, it was hilarious. His brain was scrambled in the same way mine was. It just added to the moment for me.

Welcome to Demonland: Bayley Fritsch
https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/822832/tricks-learnt-in-2020-but-more-to-come-for-fritsch “In the past I’ve probably been a natural sort of kick – I haven’t really had a routine or anything, but as I started to kick points I probably over thought it a little bit. “I think I’ve got a clear path of what it looks like next year and I can tell you I’ll be kicking a lot of goals in the off-season, so hopefully this time next year we’re not having the same chat.” The effort definitely paid off. What a season.

The turning point
Apparently this was another player-lead initiative, like Gawn vetoing the coaches about taking Jacko out of the ruck. Oliver claimed responsibility for Bont at half time. Selfless.
