3 Good things: We are not Carlton, and we used to be. Don't understimate how far we have come. Young talent building into elite talent. If the core of the list holds together, we are building something special The game plan works - we just have to play it. When we were 'on', we were a thing of beauty. A lot revolves around getting the defensive setups more consistently in place, and fixing the forward 50 connection. My god, we will then be scary. That's 3. There is a lot to be happy about the Dees right now. Even though it feels like the heart has been ripped out of the chest, we are creating something that should be dynastic.

Omac is safe. The Boston strangler wouldn’t have stopped Hawkins with lace out delivery and the space he was given in the 50. Frost was a slightly better option, but we were terrible at defending the middle and the half back, so the rest was downhill for us from there. Gee we miss Hibbard and Lever. I think JKH is under the most pressure, and perhaps it is a Bugg who gets the call-up. Vanders maybe not ready to go yet. Our forward 50 structure is abysmal. We are too predictable, and kick on top of people’s heads. IT takes significant 1:1 efforts to clunk these. That Irish idiot could have marked that last pass with a damned shopping trolley. If there was space, Hogan could lead. But that is not the way we set up. We run everyone to 30 m out, directly in front, as if it was a ‘how many can you fit in a phone box’ competition. Geelong cleared out their 50 and let Hawkins go to work. I would like to see a lot more work done on our structure here. Hogan would look a lot better with this sorted. I dont see a spot for Kielty yet. Frost played OK, and Joel Smith worked hard and did some reasonable things. Maybe move him up to the wing and bring in Wagner? Otherwise, its about injuries. Hibbard walks back in when ready. Lets see how they pull up (physically).

This thread is due out in either 3 weeks when we are out, or 8 weeks when we are out. Seems early to be punish ourselves. Also, I was ambivalent to Watts leaving. If he went and did well, OK to him. To give you a more thoughtful answer: 1. We were terrible at developing talent. I think there was a mentality in the club that talent should make it. Now we have systems and people who teach elite standards and (apart from Petty) people dont get games until they are ready. 2. We weren’t bringing people into a ‘culture’. Any of these kids would come to the club and would now be clear on what we were trying to achieve, and the group is strong. The ‘care and love’ factors are much stronger. Previously, these guys would come into a vacuum, with us and them in groups, people being selected due to external pressures and no clear idea of what we were setting up for. Guys like Neeld might be teachers, but they are not leaders. 3. They each had flaws that were not supported or corrected by the club, the development, the coaches or the culture. 4. Injury played its part in several of these selections not making it. 5. Some selections just won’t make it! I think we now look for different things, set the tone differently and go about the development of players differently to the bad old times. Some won’t make it. I love the fact that no player is bigger than the team, and that the team has a clear idea of what it is trying to do and to be.

I have this one as an absolute 50/50. Can’t decide who will win. It all comes down to how we show up, and the smarts we use. Low effort and dumb football, and we will be caned. On the other hand, The handbaggers are very gettable. Dees by 13 points, in a very tough and exciting game.

Danger Selwood and Bullethead only run one way. Get lots of possies. If we make every ball contested and make them defend us then they will be well out of their comfort zone. JKH stays in, maybe Tyson for Hannan, or maybe as a left field idea, Weids to stretch their backline with height, and chop out in the ruck. Can see Harmes and maybe Vince doing run with roles. Can see Trac stepping up. Think they will tag Brayshaw and try to stop Clarrie running to the contest. Should be a good game. Can’t see their backs betting our forwards, and can see us holding our own in defence. Battle then of the midfields. If the Brady Bunch can get up and running, we are stuffed. If we can smash them into contest after contest, we will win. AVdB and Baker not ready yet, but not far away. Kielty not yet, but hopefully gets a run before the end of the H/A.

I thought Vanders was a cut above, bollocking through packs and getting amongst it. I really like what I saw from 3 quarters of footy. I a.ways thought Lyon was going to jam up our 50, and moreso the 20-40 metre zone that we target. Fill it with big blokes, and as Demons lead into this space, the incoming ball can be cut off. sometimes it was so bad they had no structure forward of the ball. We had our press super high, and we were still 50m behind them sometimes. Free had no chance playing like this. no wonder we dominated inside 50s. We didn’t handle the pill well, conditions or not. lets bank the 4 points, recover, and get set for next week. worried about Lewis. Undisciplined elbow gives up 50m. Interesting that the phrase 'drinking your own bathwater' was used by Max in his presser - I so rarely hear or see this phrase except on DL.
