Jack Watts - More Discussion (for those who haven't had enough)
beelzebub replied to dees189227's topic in Melbourne Demons
My valuation of comments by GL is rapidly heading into the negative these days. must be eyeing off politics for he really seems to have lost the ticker for calling things as they are, but has the temerity to get upset if someone actually suggests that. I didnt see FC but enjoyed reading lloyd's comments about JW. -

Its actually a very interesting conundrum. Talented , skillful player. He reads play very well. His spacial awareness would be at the top end at the club. This then , of a sort, presents a paradox ( for mine ) If yore really really good at interpreting the path of the ball or the likely path of a player with the ball then you jump ahead ( in a fashion ) and be where he doesnt want you. In a more mundane workmanlike fashion this is what a lot of close in practice is about, i.e reading the player and knowing ( best probability ) what the options for movement are and the likely ( possible ) counter efforts at your disposal. if youre really good ( bordering psychic lol ) you make life a merry hell for your opposition. Taggers do this as their daily bread and butter, they practically ARE their opponent. Watts is good at reading the ball. He gets himself to the right spot a lot of the time. Where he falls down is if too many others have too. He is too easily 'taken out ' That is he fails to hold his ground very well. If he is 2nd or 3rd up to a contest ( big IF there btw ) he could , like a good chess player . get to where he can damage the opposition or indeed take control of the ball but invariably this requires big time man on man contact, a battle of determinations more than merely wills. You have to be prepared to put body in the way and if so a player can force a spill or create a turnover. If Jack could develop a bit of Mongrel ( word of the day apparently lol ) and embrace the art of the argy bargy he would be a fantastic player. He seems to have no appetite for this. he can see the way of the ball often but doesnt use it, he stalls, he baulks at the next step. Im not sure whether hes trying to play footy on some higher cerebal plain or hes just a bit gun shy. Either way the result is what we see today... Ineffectual and unacceptable. -
which horse Buckpasser ?

Given our illustrious position what exactly is wrong with trying things ( people) ??

Dunno, got me stuffed. Would have thought the more exposure at the higher level the better he may get.

Not responsible for it but symptomatic of it.

.I dont think Travis's problem was so much effort.I saw games where he regaled against the paltry efforts of his team mates. I think there were other Demons for Trav.

Much of what you refer regarding players is probably pretty fair comment but a coach , any coach works with what he has in the same ethos as you can only play the team that turns up, Im not fussed if we lose, I dont expcect to win. I am not convinced Craig is whole heartedly going the developmental route . He seems to switch back to 'circle the wagons' mode
-
This I think is an interesting sticking point. Many here would effectively write off anywhere form 1/3 to half of the list. The coaches would without doubt know the players better as people etc and we effectively only gauge via watching games and training but in the end the litmus must surely be how they play as a cohesive unit and we suck. So Do question the validity of a coach who thinks that teh list is essentially sound bar a few here and there. if this is Craigs viewpoint then I definitely dont share it and I would ( imho ) question his suitability for the coaching role.

what would you do old ? how do we deal with the Watts offloading ?
-
I think this may well be the case. Whats Watts worth.... only what we can get in that particular market
-
does anyone know him off site ?

Apologies for the personal stuff UH.. We may be arguing at crossed purposes. You ask how the team should have performed.? I dont really expect them to have performed much better i.e Did I expect them to win ? Not in a fit. You actually touch upon a particular niggle point. How we could kick a score with so many forwards out of action ? There were times when Viney Jones and Col looked up for options and really had none. I wasnt expecting us to have many powerful inside 50's but when you take one of the few supposed almost in form types , yes our little Jackie and throw him down back where he seemed to enjoy a picnic rather than play footy I really have to question what the coach is thinking. Theres an old adage...fake it before you make it. I think coachs have to employ this tactic at times to convince their charges that there is a hope when playing. Yes you will still be very humbled on the scoreboard but you might just get a few passages to work , you know, like a footy team plays. I dont particularly blame many of the players. Many are just not up to it.

Sue I understand your words.. I refute that this is the case. -
Happy to waste your time UH.. Im not sure you watched the same games I have no idea about what you are particularly referencing in respect to not having a clue about the club. Very broad brush ..care to fill that in ?

White flagging means...no, not not trying...again ..you seem challenged.. The players ( in the main ) tried. Certain exceptions we all note. White flagging means setting up your side conceding the loss . Neeld was excellent at it. Craig seems to know a few things or two also. What was Craig defending ffs..a 200 loss ?? would it have even mattered ?? What he did was put us in a position to deny ourselves any nuance of forward opportunities. i.e he gave up the game. What a a message to send your players... hey guys its ok weve lost ?? f'n brilliant
-
Are you a simpleton, simpe minded or simply incapable of reading or rather comprehension. if you can read...( if ) I said.. Slowly for you.. It was the nature of the losses not that we lost.

Why...because I think it only goes to a cop out. There are those that would still try, despite 'knowing' the futility .it goes back to my previous assertion that to not do so simply telegraphs to all and sundry "Im a lazy shlt" Why..Because , again, I disagree thats its "not worth doing anything" Its ALWAYS worth doing something and when someones paying you 100's of 1000's to do just that well you better bloody do it in my book. in a game like footy, even basket ball and the like a lot of the game is in the space between effort and second efforts. Its that unrelenting pressure that can get to an opposition. They just KNOW that you wont give it up easily nor let them play their game easily. They have to earn every metre every possession everything, everytime. pressure ...pressure pressure. its what you do ( well, should do )
