  1. That's all well and good but if the club wants to recruit say, Ben Newton, as a DFA then it may not be able to get him as a rookie and that porentially weakens your list and limits your potential to recruit.
  2. I've stated before that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a mutual arrangement between the club and a player like Jake Trengove who is almost certain to miss a large slab if not all of the season recuperating from this latest surgery to be delisted and placed on the rookie list with full pay, total support in his rehab and no pressure on the player or the club about a comeback date. This would contrast well with the Mitch Clark situation from this year with the endless speculation about his return which might have contributed to Clark's breakdown (I'm not suggesting either that JT is in the same situation or head space as Mitch). I see it as a win/win for the player and the club in circumstances where the club has identified a player it needs to fill its list eg a DFA like Ben Newton. In similar vein, Michael Evans played very few AFL games in 2014 and is not likely to feature in early senior team selection and a similar arrangement could be made with him i.e delisting and rookie listing on full pay. He's able bodied and if he "does a Jetta" then it would again be a win/win. Jordie McKenzie deserves to remain on the list, not because he's a good bloke but because he's shown ability and leadership in difficult times. That gives him seniority over Evans and the right to remain on the senior list in his quest for a return to where he was two years ago when he held a regular place in the side. That's how I look at the situation.

  4. CHANGES 2014 - Retirements, Trades and Delistings by The Oracle Melbourne played its last game for 2014 more than two months ago. It was the eighth consecutive season in which losses exceeded wins and its percentage was again low at 68.37. Given that even after the best of years, AFL clubs are expected to change on field personnel, it was inevitable for a team that won only four matches and finished in a virtual tie for the bottom spot that heads would roll. That was the case with the Demons although the number of departures from the primary list to date falls a little short of the 25% predicted in some quarters. The club's playing list for 2014 was:- PRIMARY LIST: Rohan Bail Dominic Barry Sam Blease Shannon Byrnes Mitch Clark Mitch Clisby Daniel Cross Chris Dawes Lynden Dunn Michael Evans Jack Fitzpatrick James Frawley Colin Garland Max Gawn Jack Grimes Jesse Hogan Jeremy Howe Jayden Hunt Mark Jamar Matt Jones Nathan Jones Jay Kennedy-Harris Dean Kent Tom McDonald Jordie McKenzie Viv Michie Dan Nicholson Cameron Pedersen Aidan Reilly Christian Salem Jake Spencer James Strauss Luke Tapscott Dean Terlich Jimmy Toumpas Jack Trengove Dominic Tyson Bernie Vince Jack Viney Jack Watts ROOKIE LIST: Alexis Georgiou James Harmes Neville Jetta Max King INTERNATIONAL ROOKIE LIST Maia Westrupp During the season, Shannon Byrnes announced his retirement after a modest contribution in his brief time at the club, for a career tally 131 games of which 23 were for Melbourne and 117 goals. The two time premiership player for the Cats was originally brought in to provide much-needed experience and to act as a mentor for the younger players at the club and partly succeeded in that role before succumbing to injury during his second year at the club. Forward Mitch Clark also announced his retirement earlier in the season under different conditions when it was revealed he was suffering from depression after struggling with his attempts to come back from a serious foot injury. The man regarded among the club's top three players managed only 15 games in his three seasons at the club, most of these in his first year. Late in the season there were rumours of Clark's impending return from retirement which turned out to be true but his medical advice apparently was that for the sake of his health his comeback should be elsewhere and he sought and ultimately obtained a trade to Geelong. His career tally overall is 97 games for 97 goals. Another late season announcement was that the club's New Zealand international rookie Maia Westrupp was returning home after spending two seasons learning the game and playing mostly for the Casey Development League team. Two players, Mitch Clisby (8 games, 1 goal) and Dan Nicholson (32 games, 4 goals) were cut when the first delistings were announced last month. Clisby spent the entire year at Casey while Nicholson managed only one AFL game in 2014. Sam Blease (33 games, 25 goals) and James Strauss (24 games, 1 goal) were delisted over a week ago and yesterday Luke Tapscott (48 games 12 goals) lost his place, bringing the number of departing primary lister's to eight. Alexis Georgiou was also delisted after playing seven matches early in the season when promoted temporarily off the rookie list to cover a long term injury. The worst kept secret of the year was James Frawley's inevitable departure from the club as an unrestricted free agent on a significant contract with premiers Hawthorn after 139 games and 18 goals for the club. Certainly, few supporters expected the former All Australian (2010) key defender to remain after spending a good part of the season rotating between the forward line and defence where he was no longer seen as a vital cog and his contribution were generally underwhelming in the eyes of many and most of us breathed a sigh of relief when the AFL announced that the compensation for Frawley would be band one or, in Melbourne's case, third pick in the forthcoming national draft. The Demons welcomed father-son selection Billy Stretch for a third round national draft selection. The club has also announced that it will uplift Neville Jetta permanently back to the primary list after a breakout season as a promoted rookie. During the trade period, the club gained Carlton goal sneak Jeff Garlett, the colourful Magpie defender Heritier Lumumba and in a late trade gained GWS tall defender Sam Frost. http://cht-cdn250-is-2.se.bponlinewoc2264.ngcdn.telstra.com/platform_release/715/371/EDT_MELB_STRETCH_WEB_S_834493785__845791.mp4 http://youtu.be/XBWyZuScC2o http://youtu.be/HtqQc7zUS_g http://m.melbournefc.com.au/video/2014-10-16/sam-frost-highlights The playing lists for 2014 are now:- PRIMARY LIST: Rohan Bail Dominic Barry Daniel Cross Chris Dawes Lynden Dunn Michael Evans Jack Fitzpatrick Sam Frost Colin Garland Jeff Garlett Max Gawn Jack Grimes Jesse Hogan Jeremy Howe Jayden Hunt Mark Jamar Neville Jetta* Matt Jones Nathan Jones Jay Kennedy-Harris Dean Kent Heritier Lumumba Tom McDonald Jordie McKenzie Viv Michie Cameron Pedersen Aidan Reilly Christian Salem Jake Spencer Billy Stretch* Dean Terlich Jimmy Toumpas Jack Trengove Dominic Tyson Bernie Vince Jack Viney Jack Watts ROOKIE LIST: James Harmes Max King * to be officially included at this month's AFL national draft. There are more changes to come of course as the delisted free agency begins today and of course, the drafts later in the month and early in December will see some exciting additions to the club.

  6. Collingwood's Tony Armstrong and Gold Coast's Greg Broughton both delisted but their respective clubs have committed to picking them up in the Rookie Draft. Then there's Cameron Delaney, delisted by North Melbourne: North Melbourne delists key defender Cam Delaney
  7. AFP asked to investigate ASADA head over possible crime Desperate. Risible and the work of legal academic Martin Hardie, an Essendon man who has previously assisted that club in a legal capacity.
  8. Bombers aren't happy with this:- .They still get double the number of Friday night fixtures that Melbourne gets. Could it be that the AFL figures they're not going to be able to field their strongest team in those first six weeks?
  9. Possibly means he's done with any involvement on the AFL scene in the near future.
  10. This is a bit of a surprise - @White_Adam: Luke Beveridge is brewing as the likely front runner for the Bulldogs coaching position. Likely to be between him and Brett Montgomery.
  11. Yes, I know it's one of those feel good nothing much stories but we feature in more than our share of these games so while we haven't been promised a rose garden, it's up to us to perform and win games not only that we might have a reasonable expectatation of winning but the ones where nobody thinks we have a chance. The 21 games you won't want to miss in 2015 The financial bottom line is important and we showed this year that you can break even with a financially unfriendly programme but to most of us the football bottom line - winning games - is even more important. The programme gives us every chance to do just that. Let's embrace it. I'm expecting to be 4-0 after the first month.
  12. Nah too late. Cream were active in the mid 60's and had gone their own way by the early 70s.
  13. Welcome back Old Dee. Lots of things are happening on the site, at Melbourne and of course with the Essendon dope saga. For instance, were expecting a big announcement from ASADA later this decade. On the Essendon front they've gone and hired a new assistant coach to the golden boy who is now known as "coach for life". The name of the new assistant is Mark Needle about who Bomber President proudly said when announcing the appointment, "with a name like 'Needle', he was the perfect candidate". Apparently, nobody was game enough to tell him that Tanya Hird who took copious notes during the interview process is a poor speller. Little also revealed that the selection panel was forced to overlook the only other realistic candidate George Stoned because he announced his retirement immediately after his interview. Meanwhile, Herald Sun football manager continues to insist that the mothers of half the team don't exist.
  14. No Cream today out of respect for Jack Bruce who passed away earlier in the week. Not sure if they appeared at Glastonbury either although TDI might know.
  15. Here:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN9_G8XMi8E&sns=em
  16. Fair dinkum unbelievable you people are. Satyr or TDI is a veteran of the Isle of Wight, Glastonbury or some other like phenomenon of the late 60s/early 70s (next best thing after Woodstock and Sunbury) which makes him an absolute legend who deserves to be treated with the ultimate respect and not to be mocked with this Frankie Valli muzak. You need to honour him with some real bands and singers like T Rex, David Bowie, Traffic, Fairport Convention, Joan Baez and Melanie. Show some respect. Welcome back Satyr and good health!
  17. Interesting piece in the Herald Sun about Hawthorn forward Sam Grimley:- Grimley "HAWTHORN forward Sam Grimley — who shared the VFL goalkicking award with Connors — could still be cut despite having a year left on his contract."
  18. This looks like a good resource for the draft ~ The Draft Hub
  19. Marvelous thing this free entry. I wonder if that's to offset the travel costs?
  20. The tour was much earlier in the year wasn't it? We wouldn't have known if we had picks 2 & 3 at the time.
  21. Saints have invited him to train with them pre season leading into the draft. He's been in the system for a long time without establishing a regular spot on Adelaide's list. However, Unless they see him as a Matt Spangher type I don't see where he fits in given they just traded Stanley.
  22. I don't think it would really help the defence of the players if it was also proved that this convicted criminal carried out services for the likes of Dank and perhaps even Hird who were servants or agents of the club.
  23. True Grapeviney but Neeld also lost Clark during a lengthy part of his tenure and Liam Jurrah missed many games through his wrist injury in Neeld's first season and then had that unfortunate incident with the machete in the second. There were lots of other injuries and of course, the negativity among some of the playing group referred to by m'kaaay would not have been helpful. He also didn't have recruits at his disposal like Tyson, Vince and Cross. All in all the first seasons of all of our last three coaches have been nothing to write home about and it's a waste of time comparing them. I just hope for our sake that Roosy's second trumps the others by a long way.
  24. Well, if we accept that what Josh Mahoney is saying is that it's now down to three or four out of Petracca, Brayshaw, McCartin and Wright and we also accept that Paul Roos told a meeting of supporters that we wouldn't be taking Wright, the field is actually narrowed down to three and we will draft the two remaining after St. Kilda nominates who it's taking.
  25. ASADA case against Essendon players rests on injection regime Star witness in Essendon doping case Shane Charter faces drug-related charges
