I spoke today to an Essendon insider who feels that the Bombers will field a reasonable squad. Given that this will be their best team because they don’t have a Marsh Cup game over the weekend, they should be too strong for our second string team missing a large number of players through injury.

I’m thinking that the fact that we had one player selected across the two teams is a sad indictment on our recruiting efforts in recent years.

Seems to be an emphasis on Harley Bennell’s attempted comeback - ‘I started tearing up’: Harley Bennell opens up on tough 2019 Grand Final experience. Incidentally, I caught up with the tail end of a discussion on HB on SEN and the commentator said that if he’s successful in getting back to full fitness (I know there’s no guarantees there) Bennell would be the recruit of the year - a possible All Australian.

Did he have to mention the last minute of the 1987 Preliminary Final?

We were supposed to be certainties this time 12 months ago.

I read somewhere before the season that we had a tough start to the season with two games against premiership candidates in North and the Bulldogs. A long way to go and we are in a very tough conference but so far, so good.
