THE TRADING CHRONICLES 2019
PART TWO - THE LANGUAGE OF THE AFL Speaking today on Telstra AFL Trade Radio, Essendon General Manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said: âOur intention is for Joe Daniher to play for the Essendon Football Club not only in 2020 but for a long time after thatâ. Those words translate into plain English as: âTwo first round draft picks will do the trickâ. I look forward to nine days of argy bargy before the Joey dons the red and white of the Sydney Swans at 7.28pm on Wednesday week. The machinations involved in reaching that outcome will be well worth following, not to mention the cost of the popcorn. The key to this could well be the Sydney Swansâ small forward Tom Papley who has requested a trade back to his home state of Victoria. According to Swans CEO Tom Harley: "Now, thereâs been the link to Carlton, we understand that, we know that, but what we donât know and what will probably evolve over the next little while is Tomâs keenness to get to Melbourne, but from where the club sits, heâs a contracted player and we will do what is best for the footy club." Those words translate into plain English as: âCarlton needs to hand over pick #9 and then weâll talkâ. Dodoro also had his hands full with speculation that Orazio Fantasia has requested a trade to leave the Bombers: âOrazio has not expressed any interest in leaving the club,â Dodoro said on Telstra AFL Trade Radio this morning. Those words translate into plain English as: âHeâs halfway out the door and a late first rounder should see him return to SAâ. Now that you get my drift, itâs easy to work out the language Jamie Elliottâs management was speaking when it prized out a three year offer from Melbourne when the Pies were only prepared to offer their injury-prone player two years. Demons football boss Josh Mahoney told reporters that Jamie Elliott has informed the club that he won't be seeking a move there. The race is down to Brisbane and current club Collingwood, with the Magpies confident he will stay. Which could translate into anything. Other highlights of the day were - ⢠No trades as such but thatâs not unusual because in 2017, it took until the Thursday morning for the first deal (Jake Lever) to go down. Last year, it happened at mid-morning on day one (Lincoln McCarthy) and in 2016, it was late on Tuesday (Cam McCarthy). With Dodoro heavily involved this year, donât hold your breath. ⢠Not much happening on the Tim Kelly front. ⢠No offers yet premiership-winning Hawk Grant Birchall as several clubs â not just Brisbane â circle the the unrestricted free agent. ⢠St Kilda football chief Simon Lethlean revealed his club has spoken to the management of Gold Coast youngster Ben King about reuniting him with his twin brother Max at the end of next year. ⢠... and in late news, a done deal as the paperwork has been officially lodged for Melbourne to receive unrestricted free agent Adam Tomlinson. The GWS Giants will be compensated with an end of second round pick, currently #40. The Demons are said to be intent on playing Tomlinson on a wing next year. Translated into plain English, that means we should expect him to line up in a forward pocket as a relief ruckman for Max Gawn.

Jamie Elliott
The likelihood is that this was always a case of a player manager using another clubâs willingness to bargain in order to get the best possible deal for a 27 year old client who has been injury prone for the last two years. He wanted to prize out the extra year for Elliott and found us agreeable to the three year term. I was never convinced about Elliott and am fine with the situation. I donât believe this has an ramifications about us being a destination club either. Iâm sure Josh Mahoney is moving on.

Phantom Drafts
I was looking through some of the early phantom drafts and power ranking lists and noticed that there was a definite leaning or bias towards players from Victoria. This is despite the fact that the Under 18 NAB AFL Championships were won this year by Western Australia. In Cal Twomeyâs September Draft Rankings, not a single player from the winners made the top ten. Last year, it was South Australia that won the championship and that state provided three of the top five draftees. On that basis it might be worthwhile to take a closer look at the talent from WA given that stateâs strengths in the national competition. The Croweaters also did well this year and one player from their team who has attracted my eye because he has all the attributes we need in a young midfielder - a good mix both inside and out, endurance and pace and a good user of the ball. I think Dylan Stephens who has been mentioned by a few posters might be a player who could be in line for selection, more so if the club manages to split pick 3. CHANGES 2019 by The Oracle
Canât see that it would make that much difference. Splitting the pick could help the club secure Langdon and further, if the club decides on taking an extra player, a further delisting could happen to accommodate it.

Jamie Elliott
One door closes and another one opens. If Elliott chooses Brisbane or stays at Collingwood, it means that we can use the salary cap room that would otherwise have been available for him to chase other fish. Iâm not fussed - itâs the nature of this time of year.

2019 AFL Free Agents
So the first of the free agents in both categories has been decided. 2019 Restricted Free Agent Brandon Ellis (Richmond) is now a Gold Coast Sun after the Tigers declined to match the Suns' offer. Jack Newnes (St Kilda) 2019 Unrestricted Free Agent Adelaide's Cameron Ellis-Yolmen has moved to Brisbane.
-
He is hopeless, glad we didnât get him.
The incredible Freddie Clutterbuck!
-
Joe Daniher
Well, heâs nominated Sydney and the Bombers want sheep stations for a player who some believe might not play too much football in the future. Get the popcorn ready and watch this play itself out.

The 2019 AFL Draft Combine
Combine wrap: Who starred? Who missed? Does it change the top order? And AFL Draft Guru on TALL FORWARDS/RUCKMEN Tall Forwards/Ruckmen grouping for the 2019 NAB AFL Draft Combine below. JACK BELL (Sandringham Dragons) 200cm, 73kg Lean ruckman/tall forward who is still developing physically but can impact the game going forward with his leading and marking. He has excellent endurance and clean hands below his knees and is very coachable. He played two matches for Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, giving him the opportunity to progress his ruck and body work at a higher level. As a prominent player for the Sandringham Dragons, he averaged 9.4 disposals, 3.6 marks and 11.3 hitouts in 14 NAB League matches. NICK BRYAN (Oakleigh Chargers) 202cm, 87kg A developing young ruckman who does not turn 18 years old until October this year, his agility and natural leap at centre bounces are impressive assets of his game. His willingness to compete in the air for marks, bring the ball to ground and follow up by providing support for his teammates is also notable. He has an effective kick for a tall player and showed his potential playing with Vic Metro, particularly in their win over South Australia in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. He averaged 9.2 disposals, four marks and 22 hitouts overall in his four matches. After an impressive start to the year with the Oakleigh Chargers in the NAB League, he was included in the Under-18 Australian team that played against the Casey Demons earlier in the season. CHARLIE COMBEN (Gippsland Power) 199cm, 82kg Tall forward/ruckman who has improved in leaps and bounds this year. Agile and strong overhead, he can provide a great marking target up forward. He excelled for Vic Country in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in his three matches. With thin slices of his natural talent on display, he averaged 8.7 disposals, 3.7 marks and 16 hitouts. He has also been a key player for Gippsland Power in the NAB League, providing mobility around the ground and a marking target up forward. EMERSON JEKA (Western Jets) 197cm, 87kg Tall forward/defender who has solid speed and agility for his size and presents well as a leading target when forward. He has very quick hands, showing good team orientation in passing quickly to teammates on the move. He suffered a knee injury playing for the Under-18 Australian team against the Casey Demons earlier in the year which set him back, restricting him to just two games for Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 9.5 disposals and five marks. A very neat kick for a 197cm key-position player who turned 18 years old in September. HARRISON JONES (Calder Cannons) 194cm, 75kg Tall forward who is very lightly built and has massive upside physically. He has a safe set of hands overhead and he presents well as a marking target up forward. He is an accurate set shot for goal and showed this skill with four goals in a Vic Metro trial game in April. He then played all four games for Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 9.2 disposals, 3.2 marks and a goal a match. He has been a highly promising player all year, playing College football at Essendon Grammar and in the NAB League with the Calder Cannons. COOPER SHARMAN (Oakleigh Chargers) 194cm, 80kg Tall forward/midfielder who emerged from relative obscurity mid-year to become a draft prospect after impressing at Balwyn Football Club in the Eastern Football League in June. Hailing from the Riverina of New South Wales and moving to Melbourne to study at Deakin University, this former GWS Giants Academy member showed he had a vice-like grip on the ball overhead and innate goal sense in eight matches with the Oakleigh Chargers. He is a late developer who is mobile and agile. He kicked 14 goals in the NAB League, including four goals against the Eastern Ranges in Round 14.

The 2019 AFL Draft Combine
Melbourne keeps an eye on Draft Combine "Excitingly, the Dees currently hold pick No.3 in the 2019 National Draft and will be looking to bolster their list when it gets underway on the 27th of November." Is that suggesting that we'll keep pick No 3?

The 2019 AFL Draft Combine
Kevin Sheehanâs comments on the players named in the Medium Forwards grouping for the 2019 NAB AFL Draft Combine - MEDIUM FORWARDS SAM FLANDERS (Gippsland Power) 182cm, 81kg Powerful medium forward/midfielder who has impacted matches all year, with his contested-ball-winning ability and strength in one-on-one contests real features of his play. Strong overhead and with a good burst of speed away from stoppages, he won 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 All-Australian honours after averaging 22.5 disposals, 4.5 marks, 4.5 clearances and six tackles across the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. JOSH HONEY (Western Jets) 184cm, 79kg Medium forward/midfielder who showed promise in two matches for Vic Metro at the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and has been a consistent ball-winner for the Western Jets in the NAB League, using his speed from stoppages to break the game open for his team. Very impressive clearance work, with his recent 24 disposals against the Oakleigh Chargers amongst his best performances of the year. FRASER PHILLIPS (Gippsland Power) 186cm, 71kg Lightly-built medium forward with natural goal sense and an elite left foot. At his best in the NAB League with five goals from 20 disposals against the Oakleigh Chargers, using his clean hands and game sense to great effect. Represented Vic Country in three matches at the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Grandson of former Sydney Swans star Ken Phillips. DYLAN WILLIAMS (Oakleigh Chargers) 185cm, 79kg Left-footed medium forward/defender who is extremely strong overhead and has natural goal sense. Has kicked over 40 goals across the last two seasons in the NAB League, but injury interrupted his 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and he only played two matches for Vic Metro at that level. LACHLAN WILLIAMS (Dandenong Stingrays) 182cm, 76kg Extremely versatile medium forward who is also comfortable in the midfield or across half-back, using his footy smarts and ball use to great effect for his team. A good player one-on-one, he represented Vic Country in two matches at the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and has played consistently for the Dandenong Stingrays, averaging 16 disposals and kicking 12 goals in 12 NAB League matches this season.

The 2019 AFL Draft Combine
Continuing on the comments of AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan on the NAB League Boys players picked for this weekâs AFL Draft Combine. MEDIUM MIDFIELDERS NOAH ANDERSON (Oakleigh Chargers) 188cm, 86kg Medium midfielder/forward with elite repeat efforts, using his footy smarts and ball-winning ability to impact games. As Vic Metroâs captain in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he was a highly competitive player, averaging 23.5 disposals (10.8 contested) and 5.2 clearances to win NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian honours. Strong overhead and in one-on-one contests, he also has uncanny goal sense. He starred for the Oakleigh Chargers averaging 28.7 disposals and 3.3 tackles and kicked 14 goals in six matches in the NAB League. Son of former Hawthorn and St Kilda star Dean Anderson, however he is not eligible for either club under Father/Son rules. MILES BERGMAN (Sandringham Dragons) 186cm, 75kg Medium midfielder/forward who is strong one-on-one both in the air and at ground level. He does not turn 18 until October so has plenty of physical upside. Has natural speed and power and has been a consistent performer this year at club, school and representative levels. He averaged 13.2 disposals and 5.2 marks for Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and 14.1 disposals, 5.5 marks and four tackles across 13 NAB League matches with the Sandringham Dragons. He was named the Neale Daniher Medal winner as the best player for St Bedeâs in the Herald Sun Shield final this year. RYAN BYRNES (Sandringham Dragons) 181cm, 80kg Medium midfielder who has had an outstanding year with the Sandringham Dragons, with his prolific ball-winning ability (particularly at stoppages) a real feature of his game. Has very good game sense and creativity with his hands and has developed his leadership skills across the season, captaining his side in the NAB League. He had a taste of representative football, playing one game for Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and winning 14 possessions, and has been an ultra-consistent performer at club level averaging 25.6 disposals, 3.5 marks and 3.5 tackles across 15 games. Another prominent member of St Bedeâs, which won its first-ever Herald Sun Shield final this year. DARCY CHIRGWIN (Sandringham Dragons) 191cm, 80kg Medium midfielder with excellent football nous who reads the play exceptionally well and is the first to move whether up forward or around the ground. He is a prolific ball-winner at stoppages and in contested situations as well as being strong overhead when up forward. From St Maryâs Football Club in Geelong, he was only back from injury for one game for Vic Country in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. However, he has been prominent ever since with the Sandringham Dragons, averaging 24.7 disposals and 7.9 tackles in seven NAB League matches. THOMSON DOW (Bendigo Pioneers) 182cm, 72kg Medium midfielder who is explosive and reads the game exceptionally well. He makes good decisions â particularly with his creative hands â and is composed with the ball but missed a lot of football in 2018 due to injury. He does not turn 18 until October, so there is plenty of upside with his game and physical development. He played all four games for Vic Country in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and his 18 disposals against Vic Metro at the MCG were encouraging. He averaged 19 disposals and 3.8 marks in five NAB League matches, mixing his football between the Bendigo Pioneers and Geelong Grammar. He is the brother of Carltonâs rising star Paddy Dow. FINN MAGINNESS (Sandringham Dragons) 187cm, 80kg Medium midfielder who is an aggressive and consistent ball-winner in the midfield and can push forward and hit the scoreboard. He is strong overhead and in stoppage situations, he has good vision and is very creative by hand and foot. Overcoming the disappointment of missing Vic Metroâs initial squad, he became a consistent performer for them in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 disposals (50 per cent contested) and 7.5 tackles. He starred for Scotch College all year and was a prominent performer for the Sandringham Dragons, averaging 20.8 disposals and 5.4 tackles in nine NAB League matches. Son of Hawthorn dual premiership player Scott Maginness and eligible for Father/Son selection by the Hawks. DANIEL MOTT (Calder Cannons) 182cm, 73kg Medium midfielder who was an ultra-consistent performer at club and representative level this year. His contested-ball-winning ability and composure with the ball are both key features of his play. He uses the ball well by hand and foot and can react in tight situations to get out of trouble. He averaged 17.2 disposals (50 per cent contested) with Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and 25.6 disposals with the Calder Cannons in 13 NAB League matches to cap off a promising season. MITCH OâNEILL (Tasmania Devils) 181cm, 70kg Medium midfielder who is a prolific ball-winner with the ability to step through traffic with his elite agility. He is courageous and clean overhead with a long, penetrating kick. He averaged 22.2 disposals (74 per cent efficiency) and 5.5 marks playing for the Allies in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships to win NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian honours for the second time. A consistent performer for the Tasmania Devils in the NAB League earlier in the year, he averaged 20.2 disposals including his season-high of 37 disposals against the Northern Territory. A knee injury curtailed his year after the AFL Under-18 Championships, but he is expecting a full recovery. FLYNN PEREZ (Bendigo Pioneers) 187cm, 82kg Medium midfielder who had his year stunted before it started when he injured his ACL in a pre-season camp with Vic Country. He showed his distinctive potential when he played for Team Bartel in the 2018 NAB AFL All Stars Futures game at the MCG, with his use of the ball on right and left foot a real asset. He is very clean with his hands and was previously a soccer star, captaining Victoria at under-age level before switching back to AFL as his preferred code. He is making a full recovery from injury and is on track to resume for a full pre-season. SAM PHILP (Northern Knights) 185cm, 80kg Medium midfielder whose attack on the ball, reading off hands and work rate have been features of his game at the Northern Knights all year. Somewhat of a NAB AFL Draft bolter, he didnât play for Vic Metro in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships this year but continued his outstanding year in the NAB League, averaging 19.4 disposals and 3.9 tackles in 16 matches as well as kicking nine goals to catch the eye of AFL clubs. HUGO RALPHSMITH (Sandringham Dragons) 186cm, 70kg Medium midfielder/forward who is a gifted all-round athlete with speed, agility and an impressive natural leap. His run and carry, overhead marking and goal sense make him a dangerous player, illustrated by his three goals, eight marks and 19 disposals in the NAB League elimination final against the Calder Cannons. He represented Vic Metro in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and has been impressive with Haileybury College throughout the year. He is the son of former Hawthorn and St Kilda player Sean Ralphsmith. JAY RANTALL (GWV Rebels) 184cm, 82kg Medium midfielder who continued to develop and progress throughout the year. Switching back to AFL after representing Australia in basketball at last yearâs World Cup in Argentina, his work rate, clean hands and creativity with the ball were all features of his game. He averaged 24.9 disposals in 12 NAB League games for the GWV Rebels and played for Vic Country in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.8 disposals and 3.5 tackles. BRADY ROWLES (Bendigo Pioneers) 188cm, 72kg Medium midfielder who is willing to take on the opposition, using his speed, run and carry as his greatest assets. He stood out with his physical size and athletic potential when playing for Vic Country in two matches in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, along with his performances for the Pioneers in 12 NAB League games when he averaged 11.8 disposals. COOPER STEPHENS (Geelong Falcons) 188cm, 83kg Medium midfielder who is strong in the contest and is an outstanding contested-ball-winner. He uses the ball particularly well by foot and started the season in excellent form, averaging 25 disposals in the first two NAB League games before fracturing his leg in the third match and missing the rest of the season. He showed strong form last year representing Australia at Under-17 level against New Zealand. He played for Vic Country in the 2018 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where his decision-making and composure were key components of his game. ISAAC WAREHAM (GWV Rebels) 187cm, 80kg Medium midfielder with initial speed off the mark and eye-catching repeat efforts when playing for Vic Country in two matches in the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he averaged 13 disposals and four marks. He is a good all-round athlete who is still developing, noting he is only just eligible for this yearâs NAB AFL Draft as he turns 18 in late December.

JACK MAHONY (Sandringham Dragons) 176cm, 70kg Small forward/midfielder who uses his decision-making and footy smarts to set up opportunities for his team around the goals. Excels at stoppages and provides strong on-field leadership. A very consistent performer for Vic Metro, he averaged 18 disposals at 72 per cent efficiency, 2.8 clearances and 3.5 tackles across the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. MATTHEW ROWELL (Oakleigh Chargers) 178cm, 74kg Small midfielder who is a massive accumulator of the ball, using his relentless attack on the ball, clean hands and courage to win possession. A playmaker with great vision and game sense, he has been an ultra-consistent performer in his junior career which includes best-on-ground honours in the NAB League Grand Final and AFL Futures match on AFL Grand Final day last year as well as the same honour for the Australian Under-18 Team against the VFLâs Casey Demons on the MCG this year. Averaged 24.8 disposals, 5.2 clearances and 6 tackles to win All Australian honours in 2019 as well. Averaged 16 disposals and 1.4 goals in five games in the NAB League this year.
