AI in Footy
AI will help analyse data better for sure, but the insights it generates will need to be learned. This is the common misconception about AI's ability to provide value. The other aspect is that Champion Data is not going to release its data set into the world of AI - in fact it would be taking very significant steps to ensure it is protected as they make money in selling data insights to the industry. There is a world where MFC teaches ChatGPT or DeepSeek to analyse data and interpret it according to their philosophy but Hawks or Suns might teach it differetnly. it still comes down to who is the better teacher and that is where human involvement / interpretation is still required for now.

AI in Footy
The reality is that all that information is not likely to be public as almost every sports outfit globally will have IP that they protect. There will be mainstream sports science that will be public - but that is public for all. So the advantage really wont be from a tactical / player front IMO. If you did, id be asking the sports science team some hard questions as they should really be at the cutting edge. The conversation starters and break through the 'generational' gap maybe something - but if you rely on ChatGPT to have a discussion with your playing group...maybe coaching isnt the right job for you.

I Hope the AFL Watched the Superbowl Halftime Show…
Put aside the language barrier for a moment as i think the worlds youth has progressed past this. The performance itself was horrendous.. i listen to a lot of modern latin rap / hip hop and dance music (well my wife does and i happen to be in her precense) and dont mind it at all. This was nothing like that. not one iota.

Farewell James Harmes
Sad to hear and hope he is doing ok.

I Hope the AFL Watched the Superbowl Halftime Show…
That performance was incredibly poor. Never heard / saw Bad Bunny and wondered what all the hype was about and I have to say it was one of the worst HT shows in recent memory. The only positive was the big "Frank Underwood" he gave Trump by performing. Otherwise, on music alone - terrible performance. In fact ill go as far to say that im really surprised he won a grammy - i dont get what all the talent is about.

Why it’s so desperate for us to achieve success this year
100% it needs to be a quick rebound. Playing an exciting brand of footy, with a health 8-10 wins and a few major scalps. Stability in the boardroom; content and harmony in the playing group. The onflield performance is only of the equation. We have enough cap space to offer Butters a massive contract.

I forgot about Sparrow. I dont think Rivers can make it as an inside midfielder. Culley and Steele are servicable, but are they the extractor bulls you do still need for centre clearance work? I dont know if the CC's are still are major focus in the modern game, but time will tell. I dont think Langford will become an inside beast - i dont want him too - i think he has great balance / poise in a similar vein to the Bont.

For mine, Windsor looks to have really really found something. His break away from the stoppage is just something to marvel at and with Kozzy and CJ to work with, we are going to have some electric ball movement from back-half. We are clearly going to be out-muscled on the inside game. With no JV and a young Langford, we will not be able to match it with some of the clubs that have some serious power. This gives some hope that we will be able to bounce back in time and are building a very capable list.

They would easily be able rule out a shoulder. And know the tell tale signs of breaks. But yes you can never be 100% sure. Is it worth starting the 2026 AFT Draft thread yet?

well at least with the arm, he can probably retain fitness and be ok in the early rounds.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Wednesday 4th February 2026
I think the horse has bolted on that one. He maybe skillful as anyone but his body knot built for AFL football. There is nothing wrong in saying what everyone at the club already knows. It’s not a knock on him as a player or individual - it’s a sad state for him as he could have been an incredible player.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Wednesday 4th February 2026
I wonder this too. And to part way with a 2nd rounder on top of a 3 year deal is a total head scratcher. That has to be on par with Norths pick swap with Richmond last year as one of the dumbest trades in AFL history.

Bailey Humphrey
In the end i'd rather the Hawks go after him. There's a few good Free Agents this year. Butters, comes to mind. i think he is 50/50 he leaves. I think they are at a cross-roads. Similar to where we were 2 years ago. They will try and fight through it as we did, but will likely arrive at the same conclusion that there list (albeit better balanced than ours was) has holes all over the park and will take some trading / drafting to get right. They are next in line after Collingwood and Geelong that will require a rebuild.

Is it an injury or the non-footy related matter?

State of Origin is Back
Is the player payment true? I know we are not the NFL or NBA, but in local context, that is peanuts - probably not much more than match payments received during season proper. To get players really excited (besides the honour of it <sigh>) then they need a head turner payment wise. $50K for every player in the 23 squad, would be a suffient incentive for players to want to plan. It does make the cost of the event a little more expensive, but its really an investment to see if it will take off again - Timing of it is way off IMO, but during season proper will never work given the potential for injuries etc.

The Pain Driving Lever in 2026
I sense that there is a bit of animosity there. I don’t think it’s about the dropping, but I expected to read, ,”didn’t agree but no harm done and we are still in touch, will always respect him etc etc” it was pretty much next question.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Wednesday 28th January 2026
Just wait until we go on a whopping 10 loss run and watch the output from the seniors fall off the face. i firmly put us bottom 4, with 5-7 wins. Possibly less. The pups still need another 2+ years to mature.

If you could only superimpose a picture of picketfence, this would be the ultimate GIF that could potentially break the internet.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Friday 16th January 2026
I dont unfortunately. i think its 2/4 3 if we really want to stretch defences - its a bit like how the Doggies want to setup with the "3-headed dragon". Most of the time it just doesnt work as the game is just not setup to have that many talls sitting in a forward line. However i do think we will rotate these players in throughout the season. Heath and Jeffo likely Casey starters for mine and hopefully Kingy will drop and promote players on form. Im not expecting much this year from the team, so this is the exact thing we should be doing...giving Jeffo a bank of 5 games for example. He really needs to do something this year for mine, to get a contract extension. He needs to snag at least 20 goals for mine, otherwise delist.

watched the highlights...where tf is half the team? No Gawn Langford, XL, Steele, Kozzy, Latrelle - i know Mihochek, Melksham, Viney, Bowey are all injured or on modified programs..

i think he'll be delisted eoy unfortunately. injury prone is an understatement.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Wednesday 14th January 2026
i think having it every few years will essentially keep it from going out of fashion. Or at least rotate the teams involved so Vic only plays every 2-3 years or so. It'll keep it fresh.

Training Ground?
$30M is exactly what the HFC secured (50/50 from federal and state). This is at least what we should be asking for. No Footy club would be able to enter into this type of capital project without govt support. It helps having an ex-premier pull some string no doubt. They also contributed $73M to the new precint in Dingley as well. Much of which came from the sale of Waverly back to the AFL...but the funfact is they never really bought it off the AFL, but the AFL did cough up about 20 big ones to effectively take it off their hands.

Farewell Clayton Oliver
I agree our midfield is currently our biggest weakness, closely followed by the forward line... the bet that was made was on Langford, Windsor & XL to come through and that will take another 2-3 seasons before we will be able to tell one way or another. Love Riv, Viney and the support crew in Steele, Sparrow but they are just solid B/C graders and unfortunately will not be enough for us to be competitive (make the 8). Whilst Kozzy is a star himself, it will be interesting to see if he alone can make a difference. My guess is that he'll likely attract a tag and based on what i have seen, he doesn't tend to do well with that type of attention. That is why you need at least A graders in every midfield to be competitive and probably 3-4 to have a real chance of winning a flag. With the way the game is trending though, you also need a solid rebound capability and that means HB flankers and im surprised we didnt invest more into that part of the ground as well.
