I love Nev but I think his height works against him in the zone defence. Because he isn't an attacking option he tends to play deep and he's too easily isolated in a big marking mismatch.

Interesting to see at least 2 teams on the previous page alone with Jetta and Pedersen in who played no JLT, and no Bugg who played all 3 games.

Casey VFL team enjoyed a massive home ground advantage last year. The AFLW team plays there they will get that too eventually. Our AFL side won well against Carlton this preseason and nany of the players have experience there. It's not an ideal venue but I dont think a move is priority.

You're a thoughtful poster and I rate your work. I tend to agree with you - Spencer and Watts in and Weed out, but how we got to here has sparked a bit of concern - that's another story. Where I disagree with you ... Naming man-on-man match ups is at best pointless because we don't play that way. We have a new coach and a young team, therefore the pre-season is for playing and practicing the game plan. We didn't try a structure with a hard tag and I don't think we'll tag Riewoldt or Steven. We'll go head to head. Bernie played in the back-line and it's not a stable line-up there anyway so he should play there. Same for Melksham, you have him forward but he played back all JLT. The JLT set-up is why I think Spencer will play and Weed probably has to give way for Watts to give us more forward defence, yes I acknowledge Watts is not the strongest in this area either and I think we'll need to play a defensive specialist forward - I note that for various reasons Jetta is out of fashion in the back-line, but with our small forward woes I think he could be considered a a defensive small forward, but we didn't try that in the JLT so it won't happen. Put it this way - if we try something majorly different from the JLT I'll be alarmed.

What comes first game plan or list? I think you need to prepare for more disappointment. Dunn is off the list because he couldn't play zone.

Nathan Vardy and Darcy Cameron have both looked handy Fwd-Ruck in the JLT and both were available to us.

Agree, and if we had a couple of in game injuries then he would have played to manage rotations, that's why he was ready to go on the bench. But thankfully he wasn't required.

JLT observations pointing to selection and strategy 1. No one but Gawn and Spencer have contested the ruck. Did Watts ruck at all against WC? Weigh this up against Goodwin clearly concerned about our lack of forward pressure. 2. No tag even when WC mids running rampant. I'd expect us to at least try that structure if we intend to tag any Saints. 3. No Jetta even though he has been fit to play.

Yes calf injury for 33 year old, not a good sign (ask Daniel Wells). He won't play and if he does he'll be a liability.

The Saints are a good side, have added Carlisle who fills a key need and have positioned themselves very well to add a top mid (Fyfe, Martin, Rockliff?) next year which will cap them off nicely. They're a serious contender in the near future.

I agree Hibberd is a big loss and I don't think he should play R1 - too underdone. Without Wagner and Frost then Garland is 4th choice but we're fortunate to have one, let's see how he goes against WCE. Jetta is fit and available and has been overlooked twice, he's out of favour and I think it's because he doesn't match up well in the zone against the Saints tall forward line. I expect Garlett to play, he's had a full pre-season, played JLT1 and has had plenty of time to get over his hammy. I agree Kent is too underdone to play. But I think your idea that Garlett and Kent are key to our scoring against the Saints is a stretch: 2016 R6 v Saints: Garlett 10 possessions 0 goals, Kent 10 possessions 1 goal 2016 R17 v Saints: Garlett 7 possessions 2 goals, Kent 18 possessions 0 goals They kicked 3 goals between them in 2 matches last year. I think the R1 side will probably have Garlett as an addition, that's not 80% that's 95% playing in JLT3. I don't see this line-up a liability that's certain to lose by 50 points as you predict. Yes but it does make a big change to our structure and we haven't been playing that in the JLT. I'd expect us to practice that structure if we were going to use it for real. At least for a few quarters but we haven't so I don't expect to see it.

Gawn wasn't "completely beaten" but Hickey played very well and surprisingly at least broke even with him in an area we could expect a win.

I don't expect us to go man-on-man against anyone, including Steven or Riewoldt, I think we'll play our own "fearless" style and back that in to beat them. Man-on-man is "fearful". It's gonna be very interesting to see what happens.
