Oliver won the tap as I recall. Watts was deep in the scrap with Lewis, the push and shove with Silvagni came on the tail end after Silvagni dragged Watts out of the scrap.. Some people are never happy - Watts too soft, Watts fighting too much.

I rate Brayshaw but disagree. I think he can work on his main game at Casey as #1 midfielder to Spencer in the ruck. That's the role he's going to end up playing at AFL level. On the other hand, for example, Oscar won't benefit playing at Casey, the back 6 or 7 need to play together at AFL level to develop the cohesion necessary.

IMO one of Smith or Pedersen has to play. Last week's TOG: Gawn: 80%, Watts 70%, Weed 80% That means Watts is in the ruck 20% of the time when Gawn is off and in the forward line 50% of the time. If we go with Weed and Watts as our only 190+ forwards then Weed is the only one in the forward line for 50% of the time when Watts is rucking or off.. Watts and Weed in together 30% and only Watts 20% when Weed is off.. Add Smith or Pedersen and we have 2 190+ 100% of the time.

It will be interesting and instructive to see what happens at selection. I'd go for: In: Vince, T.Smith, Kent Out: Lewis, Hogan, Brayshaw I think we need an additional marking target when Watts is in the ruck so I'm favouring Smith who sounds like he's playing better than Pedersen. I'm a fan of Brayshaw but he is struggling and we need to kick goals so Kent comes in. Brayshaw will eventually become an important mid as Lewis, Vince and Jones move out of the midfield and retire. He can ply his trade as starting mid at Casey and benefit there. Right now he's playing HF, wing and it's not really his strength - ANB is playing that role better right now If they decide to make only the 2 forced changes then I'd go for Kent ahead of Smith and play the small forward line.

Punches to the head off the play are going to be viewed dimly. Apparently things have changed a fair bit since 2005 PF.

Yes the issue is that the opposition defensive spares at the bounce can hold back because they don't have to follow the forward into the square and that creates a number mismatch deep in our forward line when we win the clearance. If they run into the square on autopilot like the Saints did then the ball goes over their heads. I'm not a massive fan of the idea and criticised it last year when it rarely worked with one off the back - Max was even palming to the opposite side half the time!

Running two forwards off the back of the square at the centre bounce is not the same as playing 8 defenders. We ran one off the back last year and 2 or even 3 this year. They are in a position to receive heading towards our goal, not away from it as they would be if they ran in from the traditional forward centre square line. It's a no brainer and its not 8 or 9 in the backline.

I'm assuming Hogan and Lewis will be suspended. Vince comes in for Lewis. I'll be amazed if Hannan isn't retained - we do need to kick a score, particularly against Geelong, and he looks likely to score in the air or on the ground. I'd like to see Kent come in for this reason and maybe it's Brayshaw out.

Nathan Jones has improved, he has more time and space and his disposal is excellent. Maybe it's because we have more insiders and therefore he's able to get outside a bit more and maybe it's because he's worked hard like he always does. I really like to see the ball in his hands now, that wasn't always the case. Jack Watts' dropped marks were very frustrating but glass half-full is he is getting to the front in the contest and providing an option going forward through heavy congestion. If he holds those marks, with his disposal on the other side, he's very damaging. I think he's working very hard on his game.

They'll both be fortunate if they get only 1 week.

Some strange analysis of what happened based more on false expectation than actual. I said before the game I just want a win. Carlton played well, off 10 days break, their entire coaching team at our R1, they ran very hard defensively and set a great zone and then worked hard out of defence. There's three reasons they only scored 9.10 - their defensive plan, they are young and/or ordinary in attack and our defence held well. Carlton fancy themselves against us and got up for the game - they wont be the only ordinary team that has that focus against us. With a starting midfield of Kruezer, Murphy, Cripps and Gibbs they do have a solid core. They'll get belted in games this year when they don't bring all they have, but they played well yesterday.

It was good list management. GWS got 2 top 10 picks for him and still have an awesome midfield.

Cultural issues and player retention failure originating from poor list management. GWS have not experienced this.

Just like Gold Coast eh? SOS gets a lot of stick but GWS are flag favourites and GCS are struggling. I think his list management has been pretty good. As posted earlier he hasn't sold the farm for the GWS "rejects" and they are better and younger options than the rubbish he started with. Lets see where they are in 5 years. I think we know it's a long haul.
