If we have the ball and I'm about to give it to you but I can't because you're scragged off the ball, what's the point in the free? We already have the ball - hence the 50. That's the justification - to prevent "professional" free kicks that stop the team with the ball from attacking.

Gary Ablett rule. Have a quick google, but basically can't prevent a player from running on to receive the 1-2. It's 50 if you do, but most umps either don't know the rule or don't pay it.
