I wonder how Grundy will go learning “forward craft” when we will have Grundy, BBB, Schache and Jefferson all playing in the same team. A nightmare for all involved

Good point. Schache ruck, Jefferson wing and Brodie can watch what BBB does (or perhaps is trying to do)…

I agree. Don't like him as a forward at all. At least not a leading, goal kicking forward like brown

That said, he could i wonder if he could take melks role as the defensive forward and say blanket vlastun - and if that works, players like weitering, Moore and Alir. He certainly has the defensive chops for the role.

And that would free melk up to play fritters role and be more a pure attacking forward.

That’s an interesting thought and it would be a bow for Petty to add; being that defensive forward on a tall like Broad (who gets slightly more intercepts these days than Grimes).

The key is engaging the defender as they approach the contest ensuring that you are physically imposing on them as they wish to impose on that contest. It is not easy to do it well, the best forwards won’t have to do it because they are usually the target, and usually the target has a hard defender on them and not an intercepting player.

You have to read the play so well because you are protecting a Melksham or a Fritsch or a Petracca AND you need to read the footy AND you need to engage that defender.

Honestly, I reckon it’s one of the last things forwards learn because they all want to be the one getting the ball - sometimes it’s not for you…

  3. Agree with some of the sentiments about The Petty Experiment but I can see the allure. It isn’t ideal we are still chopping and changing but that’s life with NQR talls in the forward line.

I look forward and I hope. The advice I gave to Grundy in his thread remains - Petty needs to make himself push the defenders around the ground and he needs to make himself important when we move the footy. That doesn’t mean to be where it is but yeah, let’s not get into that again.

Buried in this is Charlie Spargo is not best 23 at the minute and I can’t say I am surprised - he’s a ball stopper and his limitations are catching up with him when he dwells on the footy. He’s smart, but sometimes the smart thing to do is give easy hands, run to position and not yell like an effing banshee to get the ball in a spot that you can’t do anything with…

Is he a Collingwood supporter? He doesn’t seem to be aware that GMBH Stadium exists and that Geelong are likely to play there if they finish 5th.

This thread has been a real hoot.  Schadenfreude is so satisfying. From my perspective its been worth trading Jackson purely for the joy of laughing at Freo.

Life will be a little emptier next season without the death ride. I reckon we should trade another player to Freo or another club this trade period for their future picks so we can keep this death riding show on the road.

Don’t cry because the ride will end, be glad that we were able to ride it together.

Love this post I saw on Freo's BigFooty today:

"Pick 4 going to Melbourne makes me physically ill.
Not even the most pessimistic of supporters last October in trade week could have seen this coming.
I thought maybe it could be pick 9 or 10 and that would still be expensive but I could live with that.
Jason Taylor and the Dees recruiters must be laughing their asses off at us. We are the gift that keeps on giving as far as Melbourne list management is concerned.
If there’s any semblance of pride and anger left in our club we have to try win 3 or 4 more games and push that pick out a bit. Avoidance of ridicule if nothing else"

That kind of fighting spirit is unhealthy…

    Ssshh.

    That’s better.

  8. Brown omitted. You’d have to say that’s that for Brown.

Petty or Grundy or JVR. Much of muchness as forwards, Petty the better contested mark, Grundy the better back up ruck (lol), and JVR the best pack breaker and future of a club.

Pick two of them and cross your fingers.

And tell them to get out of the way of CP5, Fritsch, and Kozzie…

  9. I don’t know why some get so incensed at the media; they only, by and large, have a shallow look at all teams.

Here we have a ruckman playing VFL on $650k, learning enough forward craft to play in a deep finals run after a career famously struggling to play forward rules and take contested marks.

Neither is there nuance readily apparent that has been mentioned by many on here.

So until the narrative changes - and it may be this Sunday - this is where it is.

Thanks for that, feels like being back on old Twitter. Good stuff.

The forward line is bit and pieces and has been all year.

I want another flag, to win another flag we’ll need to play better than we currently are. Feel free to disagree, FRO with calling me insane.

If we win 70 to 60 in a slugfest I'm happy. We've played some exciting footy the past 2 weeks and luckily got 2 wins. I'm happy that we are playing and practicing different styles and have ability to adapt in game

Nah, play some footy and move the ball with dare.

IMO Richmond win this.  They've got very close to their best line-up available.  Yes they are missing Nankervis, but Soldo is capable replacement, Lynch is a big out - I think if he was available they'd be a real threat in finals this season.

They have a strong backline with Balta, Grimes, Vlaustuin, Broad and Rioli.  They have their full midfield complement and it's very deep: Taranto, Prestia, Bolton, Martin, Hopper, Baker, McIntosh, Ross, Pickett, Cotchin.  As above, their forward line would be much better with Lynch in, but they have sufficient dangerous avenues with Riewoldt, Martin and Bolton.

They're playing for their season and we're looking beaten up - Jack Viney, who has been carrying us for weeks, needs a rest and he won't be able to get it this week.  Clarrie can't come back quick enough now - we may get some respite vs North the following week.

There'll be "season-over" vibes on Demonland following the match, but I don't buy into that, we're still a very decent shot at the flag despite my pessimism about this week.

Yeah, we are going to drop games while missing 2 of our top 7 players. I just want to see some exciting footy; there is no point in making it 60-70 slugfest.

I’d like to see Tomlinson stay back and have a forward line of Petty, Smith, JVR, Melk, Fritta, Chandler, ANB

That’s too tall and dumb. If BBB is done then just go small and put microchip in Grundy so he is shocked every time he goes more than 30m from goal. Smith, JVR and Petty are just not forwards up to a standard we need to move the footy against the best… he’ll even middling teams would bottle them up. Go Brown or go small.

Also where is Track and Kozzie??

You know what, go back and try again.

  14. My ignored users list has some absolute doozy’s - anyone remember Hardnut?

Anyway, BBB does the kind of forward movement that we have dropped $650k worth of resting ruckman to learn in 3 weeks.

If he is dropped it is his body that is failing him - for those that pay close attention - you will see he creates space for others behind him and makes our forward line seem deeper. Anyone can create a contest (actually that is a fallacy) but to create it in the right spots and the right times is the key to a functioning forward line.

My best games at CHF in my opinion were the ones where I drew two to allow an open player, worked to get across to split the defender, and provide a target on quick plays that sometimes was simply to get it to ground in the hot spot in front. Why have we forgotten how important role players are? Didn’t we win a flag based on that? The stars keep you up there, but the salt of the earth role players are the ones that win you big games when the stars cancel each other out.

    Now. Bounce. That. Pill.

Note: Not Broden Kelly but thought I needed something rousing…
