The mistake was that by reverting to the previous game plan he confused the players. As I read it, his comments on game plan were more that it lacked consistency in application (coaches fault after they blinked mid-year). In horse racing you can never ask a horse to ‘go’ twice in the same race. If you ask it to go and then slow it down again, high chance it ain’t going to respond the next time you ask it to go fast. Dees have seemed similarly inflexible to me… not sure if all other clubs are the same but we haven’t liked change on the fly (perhaps that’s why he talked about ‘practising exploring different ways’ this pre-season).

He never admitted or even insinuated the game plan was out of date. You can have your own opinion on that but Goodwin didn’t say it.

Throughout his time he has consistently referenced a desire to ensure supporters are proud of our football identity/brand… Can’t think of other clubs/coaches that really talk to that like he does. Funny thing I reckon 80%+ of supporters don’t care how we win, we just want to win (which he has been able to deliver a lot of).

I don’t quite get how his skills/attributes make sense in that role… curious but dubious.

I don’t understand the passion (and page volume) in the Jeffo debate. He might work, he might not. Either way he won’t be the difference between us being great and us being [censored]. He’s not Wayne Carey, I think we’ve seen enough to be confident of that.

Crikey the kid hasn’t even played a practice game at AFL level yet! I too am excited about what might come but it is too early to start marking JT’s draft card.

It is enormous money in todays terms (and still pretty big money in future terms) but salary cap goes up and Gawn/May deals won’t be on our books in a few years

It still doesn’t materially shape the odds. If bookmakers set the market poorly off the back of small fan-bets then they are exposed. There are bet backs from other corporates that can happen, peer to peer traders (eg betfair) who would prey on markets like this if meaningfully influenced by emotional punters etc. For a market like this they would have a specialist football trader who sets the market and then adjusts as money comes in but they’re only adjusting in scenarios where a material downside presents.

This is just not true. It can have some influence but the $5 & $10 bets that most supporters put on their own team are just a drop in the ocean compared to the money that the big guys stake.
