thats one of the worst attempts to validate an opinion with stats i ever ever read on this site. brownlow votes mean nothing except who won the brownlow. and the player that wins the brownlow is the one the umpires see most of. so flashy acts, and cheap possessions count for heaps in brownlow votes. as do standout physical features like blonde hair, one glove, white boots, or rolled up sleeves. because these players stand out they are noticed more. it doesnt make them better players, which is the reason why the full back never wins.

NEWTON SELECTED TO PLAY FOR MELBOURNE THIS WEEK!

i appreciated this one, because it wasnt on thurs night when i was hanging out for it lol -
thats ridiculous. i have a large involvement in junior sport, and have for a number of years, where i encourage winning all the time. winning doesnt take priority over kids enjoying themselves, but as the kids get older winning does become more important. winning and fun, are not mutually exclusive. have you ever coached a rep side? are they there to take it in turns and make sure everyone gets a kick? no they are there because people want to play at the best grade they can and win and be the best. the best kids get selected, because they give you the best chance of winning. the afl clubs draft the players they think are the best, to give them the best chance of winning. if it wasnt about winning, the people who get picked to play would be the good guys, the ones who work hard and are everybodys mate. not the d#$%s who play afl footy most of the time. do you think ben cousins is a fantastic bloke who plays cause he likes having a kick with his mates? what about fraser gherig? jeff farmer? you pick the best footballers who are going to gice you the best chance of winning. if you want a lovely kick to kick session where everyone gets a go, and you stand still and let the short guy jump over you so he can take a hanger too, go for it. down at the park. not at the mcg, not with the demons. the mfc is there to win premierships. success is how we are measured.

neaves will be waiting outside jamars house with a sledge hammer waiting to knee cap him soon lol that is his best bet to get on the senior list this year... -
out of interest, it does say that our crowd averages at home are the second highest in the last 7 seasons...and the 4th highest in the last 17 years... that shoes that our crowds are growing with time, but i spose it doesnt say if they are growing enough, or in accordance with the growth rate of everyone else's. collingwoods home crowds are their best ever, and it is interesting to note that in their 4 home games so far they have got nearly as many to their home games as we got to our 7 home games... out of interest, the '11' home games, does that include the brisbane, carrera, optus oval and manuka home games we have played over the years? because crowds at these venues would drag figures down. and while i know this year has been exceptionally low at the g, usually we get a better crowd at the g than at TD yet are forced to play there. while collingwood gets 11 at the g.

well i get the feeling the age might have been distorted a bit recently cause i know ive had a 21st in the last 6 months, and if i read rightly a few regular posters have aswell...

Neitz, David (V+) 294 32yr 5mth 22 Jan 1975 Bizzell, Clint 158 30yr 11mth 28 Jun 1976 Brown, Nathan D. 136 30yr 10mth 14 Aug 1976 McDonald, James 189 30yr 8mth 5 Oct 1976 White, Jeff 243 30yr 4mth 19 Feb 1977 Holland, Ben 185 30yr 1mth 10 May 1977 Ward, Daniel 128 29yr 11mth 9 Jul 1977 Pickett, Byron 199 29yr 10mth 11 Aug 1977 Yze, Adem (V+) 265 29yr 9mth 21 Sep 1977 Robertson, Russell 196 28yr 7mth 24 Nov 1978 of the 29 and over group,i think the biggest losses are neitz, white and robertson. robbo still has 3 years on neitz. junior is a big loss, but i believe his role can be covered by a younger player coming through. the others i think are on their last legs... only 3 of our best 22 will be 29 or older next year (yes i know our best 22 is subjective, and some might have more or less). the point of my argument is, with good recruiting over the next 2 years (and perhaps targeted trading), this list will seriously challenge if it performs. our next ten years should be very promising with this list.

i suppose there are two sides to the coin. but i am not talking about gutting the team. about trading all the players, about sacking the coach and starting from square one. but if trading one player meant we had a better chance at a flag in 4 years time i'd do it. because i will watch and follow the new players career with as much anticipation as i have bruces. everyone loves to see kids come through, so i believe the general population would get over the trading of a favourite or two. but personally, i barrack for the Melbourne Football Club. Not for cameron bruce, not for david neitz, and not for james mcdonald, although i do love these boys for representing MY club. if they were to chase money or go to another club, i am not very interested in them any more because i don't have a passion for them to win. it is why i dont follow tennis. who cares if hewitt wins? i just want an aussie to get up, i'd rather watch the davis cup... and just so you know my love is not conditional either, but my love is for the MFC, not for the players. and i think that if we won a flag, you'd love which ever players were holding that cup. and then we'd all get drunk together, and these arguments would seem futile actually that sounds like a decent argument to me. if we won a flag we would have nothing to argue about would we? so by extension we should do anything we can to win a flag lol

has he had the hernia all year or is this a recent development? because he has been listed as groin, you would think there is considerable difference in the pain of a groin strain and a hernia...if this is the case, you would think it strange that a previously injury free career has had a number of injuries all at once...
-
imo voss shouldnt be coaching yet. he played against most of the players on our list, meaning there will be a strange change in the relationship there. i think he is best served sitting out a year or two as an assistant coach before having a go. but i get the feeling he would be a good coach. i think the old brisbane style of play would suit us, tough hard bodies in the centre, a few outside players and strong forward (neitz). it would be interesting.

Melbournefc Statement - Review of Football Department
deanox replied to Gorgoroth's topic in Melbourne Demons
im not sure about that. i think that we are putting a review in place to decide if ND is the right person or if we should advertise the position. that doesnt mean we are sacking danniher, and that doesnt mean we are making public statements about his future and contract... -
you're right i do like the stats, to me they are a good indicator, the problem is that one stat never tells the story. a good example is a player can get 25 kicks but on kick 5 to advantage, or 30 hit outs and we loose the clearances. maybe i over use them, but then, they are one of the few 'facts' we have to prove a point, and they do tell you who is getting more of the ball. maybe i've been harsh on bizzell this year, but i honestly rate bell. those stats didnt include spils, and i reckon you'd find bell is leading that by a mile. they play different roles so it is hard to compare them. bell is an accountable defender whos main job has been to shut down an opponent ie welsh or didak. bizzell seems to get the loose man gig, or at least plays a looser more unaccountable style of footy where his role is often third man up, or mopping up the mess. personally i like bells run and his decisions and disposal better than bizzell, but bizzell has often been caught with nothing to kick to (symptomatic of melbournes year). i think where i see a major difference is that to me, bizzell is on his last legs. he is getting older and will prob get a year at the end of the season if he doesnt retire. i think atm, he and rivers are playing the same role, and with rivers injured he gets a run for the mfc. there would never be a choice between bell and bizz, they play too differently. in 5 years bell will be one of our regular defenders, he has much more upside and a long career in front of him, that will hopefully include melbournes next premiership. bizzell, imo, will be gone before we have that chance to challange properly, and this is why i cant see the point in having him play ahead of a player who needs the experience. i spose it is the same thing that BB accused me of. i am in this to win a premiership, not to carry players. bizzell had a wonderful couple of years with us after swapping from geelong but he is not a mfc favourite son, and i dont think that he will be the answer to our premiership drought at this stage of his career.

out of interest here is a stats comparison of the two.. http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_play...2&pid2=1496 thats probably not a bad comparison in the sort of player, but i think that with bates extra height he is more likely to end up in the kouta mould... i still think your problem is the use of the word superstar. when a player has dominated for a number of years, does it every week, and wins games by himself, then he is a superstar. a kids with 25 games experience and 20 odd goals is currently a potential superstar.
-
it was clint that brought bell into this discussion...and ashleigh, BB's comments about bell werent supporting him, he was being sarcastic because a couple of us rate him so highly... and while ive quoted this thread, im pretty sure no one has suggested trading white this season. but jamar is gone if he doesnt do something else...

just wondering if you want to know our age now, or the age when we discovered demonland, because our age now would be more relevant, but the age at which we discovered demonland is more relevant to the question of 'how did we discover demonland'.

just thought i'd make a note, sorry that response was in four posts, it wouldnt allow me to have that many quotes in one post. sorry about any spelling mistakes, i was a bit rushed, and didnt have a chance to read over it...
